Would I Still Qualify for Free Braces with the NHS?

Tuesday, May 5th, 2015
Q.

I went to an orthodontist when I was 18 and they said I needed braces, but under his licence he could not give them to me because of my age and so sent me to an NHS hospital to get them done. I have a 6-9mm overbite and I was advised to have jaw alignment surgery, but I refused because I did not want to change the shape of my face. However I was still eligible for braces. The dentist took pictures of my teeth and took scans and a cast.

However, at that time I was taking exams and so could not discuss any further as the appointments interrupted my revision/exam time. I am now in university and still want the braces. Is my condition serious enough for free braces or could it still be counted as cosmetic?

How Do I Find Out If I’m Eligible for NHS Braces?

Friday, May 1st, 2015
Q.

I am 19 years old and have been recommended to a private orthodontist. However they have given me a quote of £2700 for my treatment, and that will include widening my jaw for 6 months followed by braces for 2 years. I have recently heard that it is possible to get treatment on the NHS and that is the only possible way I will be able to afford them. How would I find out if I am eligible for treatment and who would I contact?

Will Treatment for My Daughter’s Malocclusion be Available on the NHS?

Thursday, September 4th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Gambroudes. My daughter is twelve years of age and has a mesially inclined lower right sixth tooth and her lower right fifth tooth is impacted. We have already made an appointment with an orthodontist and will be seeing him in a few months, but in the meantime, do you have any idea if these malocclusions will fall within the NHS bracket for free treatment? And how would this problem be treated, do you think she would need a brace? Any information you have would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance for taking the time to read this question and offer any advice you may have.

I Had Braces When I Was Younger. Now They’ve Moved Back. How Much Will I Be Looking At And Will I Get An NHS Discount?

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark,

I wanted to enquire about having fixed braces. I am nineteen years old and a college student. I have had braces before when I was roughly thirteen years old. My teeth have slightly moved due to not wearing my retainer long enough. Would you be able to tell me whether I am able to get braces through the NHS or if I can apply for a certain discount. If not, how much would I be looking at?

Many thanks.

I Have Just Realised I’ve Got An Overbite. Does It Require Surgery To Fix And How Much Does It Cost?

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I just found out that I have an overbite, and I think its a major overbite, I never thought about it before because I thought everyone’s mouth was like that but then I Googled why my top teeth were too far in front of my bottom teeth, then found out about the overbite. My question is, how is overbite cured? And how much will it cost in the UK? And if it is surgery to cure, what is the chance that everything will be okay? I’m 13 years old. Thank you.

My Canine Has Erupted Over The Top Of My Other Teeth. Would I Be Eligible For Braces Through The NHS As I’m A Student?

Friday, January 24th, 2014
Q.

Hello,
I am currently studying at university and I am 19. Over the past year my canine tooth has erupted out but now it is close to being in line with my other teeth, it grew over the top of my other teeth.
It is quite unsightly. My other canine tooth erupted when I was around 11 and my dentist just told to me to wait for the other one to erupt. It makes my teeth look overcrowded. My question is why did this canine tooth take so long to erupt and grow through and will I need braces and can I still get them on the NHS? How long would I have to wear them for? Thank you for your time and I look forward to your advice.

I Have Now Changed My Mind About Getting Braces. Will I Still Be Eligible?

Monday, December 16th, 2013
Q.

Hi, I have my first appointment with the orthodontists coming up in about 9 weeks. I went there last year and I was told I could get them but I said no, I didn’t want them. About 9 months later I changed my mind and asked my dentist to sign me up again (by the way I was 14 in April). He did just that and now we are at the present day where I am about to get my first appointment.

I wanted to ask you if you think I will get the chance to get them again. My two upper front teeth are overlapping by quite a bit and my two lower front teeth are too (not as much though – only about 1-2mm). I also don’t have a correct bite, when I bite down you can’t see my lower set of teeth because my upper set comes over them.

Thank you for reading this and please reply to me.

Will I Have A Scar On My Face If I Get Jaw Alignment Surgery?

Monday, December 16th, 2013
Q.

Hi, I am 17 and I have recently been to see the orthodontist about getting braces (After being on the waiting list for quiet a while). I have really poorly shaped teeth, and you can’t see my bottom teeth because of my top teeth (I think this is called an overbite, I’m not too sure). The orthodontist recommended that I have surgery to bring my bottom jaw forward, would I be able to get this free or would I have to pay for my surgery? Please could you tell me a little bit about it, and would I have a visible scar on my face if I went through with the operation? Thank you.

I’m 19 Years Old And I Want To Know If I Can Get Braces Through The NHS?

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013
Q.

Hello. I need to tell you that I’m 19 years old and on job seekers and I was wondering whether I can still get braces for free as they are starting to hurt on the gums for no apparent reason? Do you know why this is? When I would go to the dentist they said they can’t find the problem, and also on my left side, I have one of my teeth going inwards, but in the past my dentist was only offering the braces treatment, which were the ones you can remove which were no help, so is there any chance of getting free braces as I am now getting older and need to know the cut off? I hope you can help me with my questions and I thank you in advance for any consideration.

My Teeth Are Shifting Back To Their Old Position, What Should I Do?

Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013
Q.

hi there dr butt, i am 16 years of age and i had my braces taken off about a year and half ago, the result afterwards was a huge improvement, although they have moved back to there original shape, i have always worn my retainers and still do simpily because i dont want my teeth to move anymore than they already have. i just don’t get why they have moved and i don’t know what to do in order to get them back to their old position so just wondered if you could advise me please? would the Nhs offer me another treatment? or would i have to pay? i have spoken to my parents about it and all they say is that my teeth are fine, they haven’t moved blah blah but i can see that they have and it’s worrying me cos i already had to wear braces all the way through school so i don’t want to wear them through college too! hope to hear from you soon.
