Q. I’m wanting to have dentures put in as missing four of my teeth and my teeth are also extremely sensitive would this be a good idea to get done? If am to get this done how long would it take and would it be painful to get done? I’m also 16 so would I be able to get this on the NHS or have to pay?
A. Thanks for your question, it is possible to have dentures on NHS. The process to make a denture would usually take between 4 – 8 weeks, depending on the type of denture and the laboratory which is used. This process should not be painful. I hope this helps.

A. Unfortunately implants are mainly provided on a private basis. Only in certain circumstances are they provided at nhs hospitals i.e cancer or trauma.

Q. I am 23. I had braces for 18 months when i was 17/18 on the NHS and my teeth were perfect. I was given a retainer that broke and because i didnt realise how imortant it was i didnt get it replaced. Since then my teeth are moving back to their original position – if I want them re-done or whatever is needed will I have to pay again? If so without knowing the full extent of the movement how much do you think this would be?
A. Thanks for your enquiry, unfortunately, you would now need to pay for any orthodontic treatment as this is very rarely available to adults on NHS. Although prices will vary between practices and for different straightening systems, I can tell you that the current costs at my practices start from £999. I hope this helps.

A. Thanks for your questions, I would suggest that you attend an NHS dental practice for an examination, to establish exactly what would need to be done. With the help of your dentist you should be able to decide the best course to take to get you back on the road to good oral health. The benefits of an NHS dentist is that the fees are set, and in some cases you may even be entitled to free care. The first steps will be the hardest but I am sure you will not regret it. A. hi michelle, there are many practices including mine which offer payment plans interest free and low interest. the cost for fixed teeth per arch to replace a denture ranges from about £10000, to £15000. the best thing would be to book a free consultation think about how much you could afford monthly and we will discuss the right plan of action for your budget. hope this is helpful.

Q. I am having a root canal treatment for a very sensative back tooth & a crown, this is being done on the nhs but i have to pay. Can you tell me what quality the nhs crown will be & what it is mad of? and do i have a choice ? I ask this because i have a heart condition “AF” [Atrial Fribulation] & i have been told that metal in the mouth such as lead or amalgom can cause this AF that i have. What nhs crown do you suggest i have fitted ?
A. I have seen no scientific evidence to support what you have been told regarding lead or amalgam and atrial fibrillation. I would suggest you discuss this with your cardiac surgeon or doctor to get a clear picture of the facts.

Q. i seem to have a habbit of pushing my front teeth with my tongue and then pushing them back again and now, i find myself doing it all day without realizing it and now i think one of my front teeth are shaky, it seems to move a bit more now, out of place when i push it and instead of stopping, i do it alot more now to see if it really is shaky or not. im terrified as im only 21. what can i do if they fall out? i also grind my back teeth in my sleep and during the day which is a new thing during the day. what are dental implants? are they screw ins? if my teeth come out could i get them on nhs? in the morning i feel as though if i just push my teeth theyl pop out so i try to avoid doing that 1st thing in the morning. im terrified on dental jags so cant go to dentist, i would go if i could get put to sleep tho, please help
A. Start by forcing yourself to visit 3 different practices that seem friendly to anxious patients. You can be adamant that you only want an opinion not treatment. ( check prices for assesment before you go )
One of them will feel better and more in tune with you. Then start with some simple treatment to boost your confidence.

Q. At the age of 15 I had four teeth removed and was given a temporary brace to move my teeth, then a fixed brace on my lower teeth for 9 months and one on my top teeth for only 2 months. My teeth were never completely straight at the time I had the brace removed and I stated my worries to the orthodontist. He ignored my request to keep the braces on longer. When removing the braces he cut my gums severely and did not polish them afterwards. I was given a retainer to wear and was never invited to a check up. I have expressed my concerns to my NHS dentist as I have marks on my teeth from the braces and my top teeth sit slightly behind my two front teeth. I am 18 now and a student I would really like the perfect smile I thought I was getting. Is there any way I can be referred to get the treatment I should have got at the younger age? Q. I was wondering i would be able to get vaneers or implants done on the nhs as my two front teeth at the bottom have formed a gap as all my bottom teeth used to be perfectly straight and no gaps until i became addicted to coca cola and i would like the replacements to look like my own instead of having dentures like old people have as i am only 30 years of age and as an adult would i be able to have a brace fitted to my top teeth on the nhs as i have got gaps between my teeth that i would like closed up.
A. Thanks for your questions, it may be possible to have veneers on the NHS if they are clinically necessary. However, if there is no clinical need for them, then it would be deemed as cosmetic, and therefore would not be available on the NHS. If this is the case, your dentist may be able to offer a bridge as an alternative to a denture. This would depend on the stability and health of the teeth on either side of the gap. In order to fit a bridge, you would have the teeth on either side of the gap prepared for crowns, and the laboratory would attach a false tooth to the two crowns. This three unit bridge would then be fitted. I hope this helps.

I have had braces and yet i have a small gap between my two front teeth, my orthadontist said i should go and see my dentist for bonding or venners as there is nothing else she can do. i was just wondering which technique is better and longer lasting and if they are stain resistant. Also i may consider home teeth whitening kits, and was wondering if they the veneers or the bonding will whiten also. morevover can you please tell me the NHS prices fro these and if there is a significant reduction in prices if you are a university student.
A. Thanks for your enquiry, firstly these procedures would be classed as cosmetic, and so would probably not be available on the NHS. If you are considering having your teeth whitened, then I would encourage you to do this before you have any restorations placed on your teeth, as whitening only works on your natural tooth. The material which is then used would be matched to the whitened shade of your teeth. There are benefits to both tooth bonding and to veneers, as tooth bonding is a less invasive treatment however veneers would lead to a more aesthetically pleasing result in my opinion. Q. Dear Rob, I have lost about half of my teeth. I had a set of dentures made up a couple of years ago, but find them impossible to wear, they are extremely uncomfortable. To compound this problem, all of my front teeth were damaged in an accident a number of years ago, and i have a habit of grinding what remains of them. The are becoming quite ‘threadbare’ and sensitive. I am also not in a position to fund the extensive dental surgery I would require to prevent further damage. I believe there are certain criteria that the NHS would consider adequate medical justification for funding implants, and I was wondering if a patient such as myself would fall into this group. A. Thanks for your questions. It is possible that either Orthodontics, braces etc., or veneers could possibly correct your problems. However these procedures are considered as cosmetic, and as a result of this, it is unlikely that they would be funded by the NHS. You may wish to considered visiting a cosmetic dentist who offers free initial consultations, as many are able to offer payment plans to spread the cost. I hope this helps.
