Is There an Inexpensive Product I Can Use as a Retainer?

Monday, September 15th, 2014
Q.

Good afternoon Dr Hughes. I am currently undergoing orthodontic treatment but will not be able to afford retainers due to hard times with my family at the moment. I would like for my teeth to stay straight and not shift back to what they used to look like. I’ve looked online for a long time looking for something that I could do that would keep my teeth in place after brace treatment. Would a night guard bought from a store work as a retainer? Is there any inexpensive product I can buy from a store that would work as a retainer? Please help, I get my braces taken off in a week’s time. Thank you in advance.

Dear Andrew, I Have Noticed Some Enamel Loss Recently. Is There Any Way To Replace The Enamel I’ve Lost?

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014
Q.

Dear Andrew,

My teeth are in generally good health and I do not suffer from any sort of pain. However over the last few months I have noticed that my two upper right sided incisors have had some enamel loss, which has probably happened over time and therefore they are now shorter than my left sided incisors which looks quite odd. Is there any way to replace, naturally or artificially, the enamel which has been lost from a cosmetic point of view? Thank you, I hope you can help me with my enquiry.

Hi Mark, I’d Like To Know If I Could Have Lumineers On Only The Teeth That Show?

Tuesday, January 21st, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark, I wonder if you could give me some advice. I am currently thinking about having Lumineers on my top teeth as I feel they are too small, they are also chipped and yellow, plus, I have ground my two front teeth down a little. Could I have 8 done as the rest do not show? Also I feel my top palette is too narrow (I had my fangs removed as a teenager as my dentist said their wasn’t enough room in my mouth), would Lumineers go anyway to correct this? Thank you for your response in advance.

I Don’t Like My Temporary Veneers And I Don’t Know If My Permanent Ones Will Turn Out Okay. Will The Permanent Ones Be Bulky?

Monday, January 20th, 2014
Q.

I just got 6 temporary veneers on my front teeth. I’m not happy as they all had gaps and they look so fake and bulky. They look like a denture to me or a mouth piece you wear for sports. I can barely talk and I forget about eating. I feel like a horse and look like one as well. They make me have a lot of saliva and my teeth look big and plastic. Will my permanent teeth look like this? My front teeth feel like I’m buck toothed and can’t talk very well. Is this really normal? I have already went back to the dentist after one day and they say I won’t have this issue with permanent veneers, they said it’s because I have one piece on my front teeth, I just don’t know what to believe and I’m stressed out already.

I’ve Been Told I Grind My Teeth And Now My Veneers Are Falling Apart. Is There A More Durable Option?

Friday, November 15th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr.Andrew. I had three veneers done on my front teeth two years back and later they started falling off. I was told by my doctor to use a mouth guard as I may be grinding teeth. Also I took all precautions as to maintain them like I don’t bite anything hard, etc. I don’t like them now, they keep on falling and I’ve tried every other option. Do I have any other option apart from veneers as I don’t want to continue with them? Or can I go for implants as veneers are an irreversible procedure? Please help me with this problem and thank you for your advice.

I Grind My Teeth And Have Been Told To Wear A Mouth Guard Throughout The Day, Can Anything Else Be Done?

Thursday, September 19th, 2013
Q.

Hello,

Could you please tell me the options available for me? I chronically grind my teeth and have worn them down and they are starting to break up, mainly the upper left ones but also the other and it is causing me some pain. I have been given a mouth guard to wear during the night and have been told I should start wearing it through the day as well but that is an option I would like to avoid as it is quite unsightly and hinders my speech.

Thank you.

Do I really need a crown? What are my other alternatives?

Monday, July 2nd, 2012
Q.

hi dr, i was just wondering if you could help me? i have a cosmetic filling on my front tooth. it has been broken since i was 10. the filling is now starting to get old and the change is starting to show. i am now 19 and when i asked my doctor to simply change it he said that it cannot be done and the only way to repair is by a crown. i’ve been highly discouraged for that solution because i don’t want to file my whole tooth for a small piece that would become more unstable than my current filling. is there any other solution you may recommend?

p.s. : I am thinking about taking up a boxing class, would it be safe if i used a mouth guard? Thank you for the help.

I have bruxism, am I still a suitable candidate for implants?

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011
Q.

I have receeding gums and worn down teeth due to bruxism since childhood. I am now 50 and it is getting worse. Can I have implants when I have to lose teeth or is this not feasible? I have already lost a tooth and possibly losing another back tooth due to grinding. I have read that sufferes of bruxism cannot have implants as their gums and bones are already damaged by this condition. I am also a smoker. I DONT even consider having to result in dentures that would be my worst nightmare. Is there anything that can be done to haice set of teeth for people like me. I live in the UK.

Bruxism has ruined my once perfect teeth, what can I do?

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011
Q.

Hi,

When I was in my teens I was told I had perfect teeth. However, I have developed bruxism. I’m not sure when it happened but I became aware that it was affecting teeth about 4 years ago, I am 27 now. My two front teeth have worn down and I now never smile with my teeth as I am embaressed about my teeth. I visited my dentist a year ago having tried to ignore it for a few years. I was told that there was nothing I could do but get a mouth guard. I’ve been using over the counter mouth guards now for a year, but I don’t want to have to do that for the rest of my life and I also like to have my teeth fixed as I think they look so short, they are now not connecting with my bottom teeth I have noticed recently. I’m thinking of visit my doctor to see if he could refer me to anyone. Could you please offer any advice as it is really affecting my confidence and everyday life.

Thanks

What can I do about my teeth grinding?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
Q.

I grind my teeth at night and have for about 25 years. Normally, I wear a mouth guard. I also have migraine headaches and other types of headaches. I think that there is an association between my grinding, ear issues, and neck pain. Is there any way to stop the grinding? Most of the night guards I have had recently, last few years, have not been helpful. They do not take the inclusion into consideration. My teeth have vertical lines in them from the grinding and my gums have recessed (I think there are other reasons for this, but hygeine is not one of them, FYI). What suggestions do you have for the grinding and for a mouth guard that is not expensive but works? Do the vertical lines in my teeth make it difficult for me to not have my teeth whitened adequately? (a dentist recently mentioned this and it did not sound realistic to me). Thank you!
