Q. what is the causes of myofascial pain dysfunction sundrome? thank you

A. hi
its what we diagnose uptight neurotics with generally, but there are certain patients who experiance this due to stress and grinding of teeth or if they have had a lot of restorative work done at once
a splint would be the first line of treatment along with a study of the occlusion

i have malocclusion in my teeth. is it safe to get orthodontic treatment at 30

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Q. hi, i am 30year old, i have malocclusion in my teeth. is it safe to get orthodontic treatment in this age and how much accuracy we can expect and what are the side effect? thanking you,

A. It is perfectly fine to have orthodontic treatment at your age. As with any treatment there are always s

mall discrepencies in the final result but for the most part it will resolve any malocclusion that you have.
Side effects to orthodontic treatment are very occasionally a nerve can die or a root can begin to dissolve. These occur extremely rarely and it should deter you from having the treatment done
Kind Regards

The problem I have is, is that my lower jaw is slightly longer then my top jaw

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Q. Hi Dr, The problem I have is, is that my lower jaw is slightly longer then my top, which causes my bottom teeth to overlap my top teeth by 3-4mm. Im 32 and embarrassed. I hat emy side profile a lot becaus eof this, but I don’t want surgery either. Is there a brace that can help sort this problem out? What is this condition called? Many thanks for your patience.

A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, you have what we call a class three malloclusion. unfortunately due to the size of the overbite your only option would be to have surgery to correct this. hope this is helpful.

I have badly neglected my teeth

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Q. I am 62 years old and I have badly neglected my teeth, I have a partial denture and the rest of my teeth are uneven, roots showing etc. In some cases the bone has worn away. All my bottom teeth are okay but very uneven, I don’t know if crowns will be able to rectify the damage. If so I would need approx 16 crowns and a partial denture of 6 teeth. Can you advise on suitability and approx cost?

A. It is very difficult to advise you on suitability. You would need to have x-rays taken, assessment of the health of your gums, mobility scores and then a treatment plan could be devised. If you have a full mouth rehabilitation which is possible you could end up spending between £10,000 and £20,000 depending on your needs.
You need to go and see a cosmetic/restorative dentist for an opinion so that all the correct records can be taken to come up with a suitable treatment plan.

Can we have a better obturator for the roof of the mouth

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Q. My father-in-law recently had an operation for cancer, which involved removal of some of the roof of his mouth, as a result of which he now wears an obturator. Following radiotherapy, his obturator now fits so poorly that he is almost unable to eat or drink, as everything comes straight down his nose. It also makes his speech difficult to understand. He has gone from 12 stone down to about 9, and is still losing weight – to the extent that everyone involved in his care is concerned about him, but his reconstructive dentist is too busy to anything about it. Is it possible to have an obturator made privately? What would the likely cost be? How long would it take? It seems absurd to cure a man of cancer only to condemn him to starve to death! I look forward to hearing from you.

A. hi many thanks for your enquiry. i do not have alot of experiance with this kind of device but i am more than happy to have a look at your father in law and look at the best treatment options that would be suitable for him

I have malocclusion will I need jaw surgery to put it right

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. Hello. I would like some advice please? I am a 23 year old woman and i hadn’t been to the dentist for 10 years up until i went again when i was 19. There was nothing major that needed to be done – about 7 fillings due to tooth decay, but other than that, i was told my oral hygiene was good. My Dentist did however also tell me that i have malocclusion. She explained that this is where the teeth don\’t join together correctly. My bottom row of teeth come out slightly. This has made me very self conscious about the way i look. I have spoken to my Dentist about it on a couple of occasions and i have expressed that i would like something done about it, but she kept putting me off by saying treatment would be too expensive and possibly unpleasant. I have found this quite disappointing so, could i please ask for your advice? I was told that surgery is probably what will put it right – the thought of having my bottom jaw-bone broken somewhat unsettles me but i also thought about braces… Could this also be a possibility to put it right? I would be most grateful if you could help as this is something i really want to have put right but i don\’t know where to go to have this procedure done. I look forward to your response.

A. Can I ask whether you had a problem with your appearance before your malocclusion was pointed out to you?

Jaw position can either be determined by your skeletal patterns or it can be determined by your teeth. If your teeth and not fitting together properly it could be that your lower jaw is further out for this reason.

there are other options to surgery which are less invasive and it is always better to try these options first. There is something called equilibration that may be an option. This should only be done by a dentist that is trained in occlusion. This is a skill that most that most dentists don’t have and you need to find someone who has experience in this field. If you live in travelling distance of Buckinghamshire I would be happy to see you for a complimentary consultation. You don’t have to have treatment with me but it would be much easier to advise you as to the best course of treatment. If you are in the London area then Dr Justin Glaister who is also an expert on this website is very well trained in this field could see you.

Equilibration would cost between £300 and £1000 it just depends how involved it is but this is probably the cheapest option there is for you. Another option that may be available to you is orthodontics (braces).
