I have a loose crown which needs to be re fixed can you suggest anything to help this problem

Monday, June 1st, 2009
Q. I have a loose crown which needs to be re-fixed. The adhesive has failed but it seems that the two posts in my root filling are set at an angle which won’t allow the crown to be prised off. My dentist is concerned that forcing it might snap one of the posts and he has advised that I try eating toffees to work it free but if that doesn’t succeed he says he’ll have to cut the crown off. That will be an expensive job. I’ve tried the toffees, pulling and rocking the loose crown and that seems to have loosened it a bit more but it’s still holding firm. Can you suggest anything to help with this problem please?

A.

The advice given so far seems sensible for most cases. If the crown has not come away within a few weeks I would reluctantly divide the crown ( sounds better than cut off) and remove the two sections individualy.
Regards Rob

I am 24yrs old my upper tooth are falling and I feel ashamed would dentures look natural?

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009
Q. I am 24yrs old and my upper teeth are all falling out one by one what should i do every dentist i see tell me to get implants but they cost to much.how about dentures will they look natural i am ashame i dont even smile any more can you please help me…..

A. It must be awful for you to be experiencing this….but be aware that there ARE options regarding your teeth. You need not suffer.
As you are still only young and hopefully have many years ahead of you…….the best long term option would be implants- as you have been told in the past. They are the next best thing to your real teeth- and are fixed into your mouth. You are right, however that it is a costly form of treatment. Please do not dismiss the idea straight away. Alot of dental practices offer financial solutions- such as 0% finance. It is not something to go into lightly, but I do advise that you have a consultation regarding your teeth. I would be more than happy to see you myself, or alternatively, I could recommend some good dentists in your area.

On the subject of dentures, there is an art to making them look natural. There are some great denture lab technicians that can construct works of art,- and it IS an option.

In the meantime, I would stress that you have regular dental visits and hygiene visits to stabilise the condition of your remaining teeth.

My tooth loose due to bone dencity

Saturday, April 4th, 2009
Q. Hi just been to dentist,my tooth loose due to bone dencity im told there is nothing they can do.I have been told its just a matter of time before i loose it possibly more than one. i had my teeth staightend 5yrs ago and i have retainers at the back of my teeth top and bottom.what if anything can be done.

A. Sorry I can’t really tell from your description, maybe you need to get a 2nd opinion, if the teeth are really that loose then there maybe an underlying gum problem that needs treating. The teeth could be replaced with implants once removed if the problem with the gums has resolved

Q. Dear Sir for the last 12 years i have suffered from stress mainly forom losing 7 loved ones i death. I have spent 2008 in and out of a NHS dentist for filings replacement front cap over a very painfull tooth. On every visit very little has been done i asked to be refered back to Leeds Dental Institute. still nothing this is my third dentist in the same practise. After my last filling on a and having been told i had gum disease i asked why can’t the front tooth thats been causing me pain for over 8 years be replaced. On every visit to the dentist after my teeth get more painfull. I do not smoke i do have high cholestrol.Im 46years old female over the lasy 3months from having problems with only 2 teeth i found a further 5 are very lose and painful. Please advice me as i can not yet offered private care. I regularly brush ,floss and have special brushes my teeth look white and people say how nice they look , but the pain is making me very down.

A. It sounds like you need to see a facial pain specialist at The Leeds dental Insitute. If you haven’t been referred there yet you should try to contact them directly explaining the problems you have.

Post infection a few months ago my wisdom tooth has become loose. What are the best options for me

Friday, April 3rd, 2009
Q. A few mnoths ago I had an infection of one of my top teeth next to my wisdom tooth. It has since been slightly loose. I am not keen on extraction so would a cap or crown be beneficial. Or is it best to have it extracted? It is not causing me too much trouble currently. but I am worried if it gets infected again Many thanks

A. A crown won’t improve the condition of an infected tooth. You may wish to consider extraction , gum treatment or root canal before the infection becomes more serious

I have gum disease and one of my tooth is wibbly

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q. Hi, I have gum disease and one of my tooth is wibbly i visit the hygienist every 3months last time iw ent to see her was december 2008 and she said keep brushing my teeth etc. I have been burhsing it clean with an electronic toothbrush but my tooth still seems to be wobbly, what can i do?

A. The tooth may need removing and replacing before you lose all the supporting bone. I would consult your dentist for an x-ray to see what your long-term options are

I have just been diagnosed with having gum diesase and my teeth are becoming loose

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q. I have just been diagnosed with having gum diesase and my front bottom teeth are loose, I have just had a crown on my upper front tooth which cost me £1200 pounds. what can I have done to my bottom teeth? I can’t afford £1200 per tooth and wouldn’t be able to have crowns or bridgework as the surrounding teeth would not support the loose ones as they are loose to? Many thanks

A. Hi

A crown wouldn’t help with the gum disease. You will need to consider gum treatments either with a Hygienist for less severe problems or a Periodontist for more advanced disease. If the teeth are very loose you may have to consider removal and replacement of the teeth, either with a bridge denture or implants.

My front teeth have loosened a little and the come has receded considerably

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
Q. I have never had the best shaped teeth in the world but have always been told by my dentist that they are good strong teeth. I dont smoke and I am very particular about cleaning my teeth and flossing. A couple of years ago my dentist retired and this has not helped me because I have not been to a dentist since. In the last couple of years one of my front teeth have loosened a little and the come has receded considerably. The tooth is sticking out further and further and I now have a gap each side of it. I dont smile anymore and when I clean my teeth, that tooth is really sore for quite a while after. I would not call it a toothache though. I know that I am going to lose the tooth eventually but I am petrified at the thought of false teeth. I cannot bear the thought of anything like that in my mouth. So what I would like to know is…..As I cant work through disability and am on benefits, would I be able to get a good reduction on cosmetic dentistry. I could afford to pay something but not a great deal. I would like an implant instead of the tooth I have. Would a dentist remove the tooth for me on request?

A. Unfortunatley dental implants are not available through the NHS. You would need to pay for this treatment privatley or accept an alternative treatment such as  a bridge or a denture for the replacement of this tooth.

I would go and see a dentist as soon as possible as there maybe other teeth with underlying problems that require attention

thanks  Andrew

Hello, i am 43 and have a lot of bone loss and my teeth are very loose

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q. Hello, i am 43 and have a lot of bone loss. My dentist reffered me to Guy’s hospital some time ago, but i found it hard to keep up the treatment as i am on my own with two small children and the logistics of getting to and from the hospital where very difficult. often i would turn up and my appointment had not been recorded and i was unable to see a consultant. My teeth are now very loose and i have lost two molars and two pre molars at the top of my jaw and one molar and one pre molar at the bottom. my two remaining molars at the top are extremely painful and loose and i am finding it hard to eat. I am very worried about my front teeth as they are now loose. My hygenist was afraid to carry out any work on them. I would really like some advice as what to do next as i really cannot afford to pay for private treatment. I have been told i will require a bone graft. i am very worried and in a lot of pain. I looked into going abroad for the treatment and my dentist suggested that is what she would do, however, i am now in a worse financial position than i was when we first discussed this. please please if you could offer any suggestions i would really appreciate it. thank you

A. Hello

I’m afraid complicated treatment such as this isn’t easy to obtain on the NHS. It might be worth trying to rearrange the treatment at Guy’s as this way you will receive the best treatment without having to pay.

I am a 62 yo male and one of my front bottom tooth is loose and has been for almost 1 year, can anything be done please.

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q. I am a 62 yo male and one of my front bottom tooth is loose and has been for almost 1 year, can anything be done please.

A. The first thing we need to assess is why the tooth has become loose.  This could be due to periodontal disease (bone loss) or the way your teeth bite together might put too much force on it.  Once we determine this we can assess your options an implant could be the best choice,  a bridge which attaches to the teeth either side of the but this depends on the strength of these teeth or a denture.

You need to have a full assessment first.

am 41 years old and am losing most my teeth to gum disease

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q. I am 41 years old and am losing most my teeth to gum disease, what kind of false teeth would i be looking at getting? I feel I’m to young for the kind my 76 year old mother wears.

A. This depends on how many teeth you’ve lost. It could also be possible to use implants to hold fixed teeth or to anchor dentures firmly in place. You could also try to save as many teeth as possible and use bridges or a chrome denture

My husband is 45 and has gum disease, which is cauing his teeth to fall out.

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Q. Hello, My husband is 45 and has gum disease, which is cauing his teeth to fall out. One tooth already fell out and the other one is very loose. Is there anything thing we can use until we get enough money to see a Dentist?

A. I don’t think there is anything you could use temporarily when teeth are lost, maybe you might qualify for some help with NHS payments so he can receive the treatment he needs

Q. I have a very loose front tooth, what is the cost be of a maryland pontic winged replacement please

A.

In my surgery a maryland bridge would cost in the region of £1000.  However my preferance would usually be an implant for long term stability

infection has not healed after root canal treatment and tooth has decoloured

Saturday, March 28th, 2009
Q. I had an infection at one of my front tooth and i needed a root canal. My dentist did it but i still have some of the infection left as i can feel it. Because of the root canal my tooth discoloured slightly and i don’t like it.I would like to whiten it but i don’t know where to go for cosmetic dentistry. Also the tooth is moving slightly and i am scared not to lose it.i don’t know if it is moving because of the root canal or because of the infection.Do you think I should pay the money for the whitening or what treatment do I need?pls tell me will i lose my tooth because of the root canal or is it just weakened?thank you

A. Before you have the tooth whitened it needs to be reassessed as it does not sound like it has healed fully yet.  I would get your dentist to re examine it take some x-rays.  It may need re cleaning.  I would only embark on whitening once the tooth is pain free and solid.

my bottom teeh in the front all four are loose

Saturday, March 28th, 2009
Q. I’m 45 yr. old female had dental problems since i was born couldn’t tolorate milk my mom said when i was born. so my teeth wasn’t healthy. my bottom teeh in the front all four are loose one of them in very loose than the other what sugestion you coudld give me. i need help i have no dental insurance.

A. You could have the teeth removed and a partial denture fitted. Once the tissues have stabilised you could consider your long-term options such as a bridge or dental implants. These are more costly options that you might need more time to consider whether they are right for you
