My Tooth is Still Discoloured After Internal Whitening. What Can Be Done?

Friday, November 27th, 2015
Q.

Hi, I had root canal a year or so ago, and my tooth has been discoloured. I have had internal whitening which has lightened the overall colour of the tooth, however I have 3 very distributive black lines on my tooth and my dentist says there is nothing else he can do. But he is thinking from a dental perspective not a cosmetic, as to me my tooth is still discoloured and makes me very self conscious as it’s my front tooth. Does this sound like something that can be sorted?

Thank you.

Should I Have Internal Bleaching, a Crown or Veneers to Treat Discoloration?

Wednesday, April 1st, 2015
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes. I had a root canal on my maxillary lateral right incisor about 10 years ago, and it has discoloured really badly. This happened after my second set of braces were removed. Initially bonding masked the grey tone but eventually that’s come off as well. The tooth has also rotated back to its original shape prior to braces. Do you suggest internal bleaching, veneers or crowns? The thought of having a lot of the tooth shaved for a crown scares me a bit, especially in case it breaks. With veneers, would I require one or more to match the surrounding teeth? Thank you.

Should My Dentist Attempt To Whiten My Tooth Prior To Fitting My Crown. Is This Something You Could Help Me With?

Thursday, June 26th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I noticed a reply you made concerning internal whitening and wondered whether you’d be able to offer me some advice please? I’ve had a porcelain fused to metal crown replaced by a porcelain crown on my front tooth. Unfortunately what’s left of my tooth underneath is almost black and shows through the crown and gum itself. I was really disappointed by this as whilst the crown itself is better it’s more blue than the previous one. I’ve read some comments online that perhaps my dentist could have attempted to internally whiten my tooth prior to fitting the crown and/or tried masking the tooth. My question is; can this be done now that the crown has been fitted or would this require my crown to be replaced? I assume that removing my current crown would ruin it and so I would need a whole new one if that was the case? Also, is this something you could help me with at your practice? As I fear that my general dental practice (whilst very good) may lack the expertise to help me on this one.

Any guidance would be hugely appreciated! 🙂

Thank you.

I Had An Accident and A Tooth Had Been Root Filled. Now It’s Discoloured Is It Best To Have Internal Bleaching Or A Veneer?

Thursday, March 13th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark, I hope you can help me. Following an accident I had, my front tooth had to be root filled and this is now slightly discoloured. Would this type of procedure work? My dentist is currently trying to bleach the inside as bleaching outside did not work. He is reluctant to put in a post bridge. Would an ordinary veneer be better or would that make the tooth protrude against the other front tooth. I fell on my front teeth which dislodged 7 of them. Thank you.

I Had A Root Canal 3 Years And Now My Tooth Has Gone Grey. Would Bleaching Work For Me?

Monday, March 10th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Moore,
I had a root canal done 3 three years ago and then my tooth became orange/grey.
I would like to know if internal bleaching is a good option as my tooth has not discoloured that much and I am not interested in a crown so far. In regards to veneers I was told that I have to have it done on my 2 front teeth and I do not like this option as one of these teeth is totally healthy.
I am looking to find a dentist that could do it. Could you also tell me how much it would cost?

I hope to hear from you.

My Teeth Have Gone Black After A Root Canal Making My Veneers Discoloured. Is This A Common Problem And How Can It Be Resolved?

Monday, January 27th, 2014
Q.

Hi. Just over 2 years ago I had a smile makeover at my local dentist. This involved teeth whitening first and then 6 upper veneers and 3 lower. I had to have root canal on 3 or 4 of the teeth because my dentist advised me they had to file the original tooth close to the nerve.
After 2 years I have noticed 2 have started to go black. In my opinion it’s the tooth behind that is black and it is starting to show through the veneers making the veneer seem darker than the others.
I have been to see my dentist and she advises nothing is wrong and the only thing she could do if I was still worried would be to drill the veneers off and smear white cement over the original tooth and replace with a new veneer at my expense of course!
Is this a common problem and how can it be resolved?
Do teeth tend to go black once root canal has occurred?
I can send a picture if that will help explain my issues. Thanks.

A Dentist Has Previously Damaged A Tooth And Now It’s Discoloured. Would A Veneer Work?

Monday, November 4th, 2013
Q.

Hello, my right front tooth is visibly darker then left one. It has been badly damaged by dentist 7 years ago (not in the UK) and changed colour. It has been re-done few times, but I never did get the perfect result. Both the shape and colour is different and it is thicker than my left tooth.
Is it possible to make it the same as left front tooth with a porcelain veneer?
I can attach picture of it if needed? Thank you.

I Had An Infected Tooth After A Filling Came Loose And Now It’s Black. What Are My Long Term Options?

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013
Q.

Hi, a year ago I had root canal surgery performed on my front tooth. I have had ongoing problems with this tooth since I chipped it when I was 12 years of age. I have had it re-filled 3 times. Before I had the root canal, I was told I had an infection as the filling came lose. It is now black. I’m a 20 year old girl and this is really affecting my confidence. Preferably I wouldn’t like to get a crown but I am looking for a long term solution. What are my options in fixing this tooth?
Thanks, please help.

My Front Teeth Are Brittle After Root Canals, My Question Is: Can The Crown Be Attached Under The Gums To Look Like The Original Teeth?

Thursday, September 12th, 2013
Q.

My front teeth have had root canals and became brittle and now only the roots are left. No more crowns. The roots are up to the gum edge only. One dentist said that the roots can be cleaned again and then posts will be installed. The porcelain jacket will now be attached. My question would be: Can the crown be attached under the gums so it will appear to be like the original teeth and so the dirt will not easily enter the jacket. Will they be strong enough to use it for biting?

Should I Opt For Internal Bleaching Or Veneers?

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013
Q.

Hi,

I have two teeth that are discoloured caused by a trauma decades ago.

The colour became worse after an infection approx six years ago. Following this I had root canal treatment on the two teeth (over 5 years ago now). The root canal seemed to have worked as seen in later x-rays. However the teeth are now more noticeably discoloured. One more than the other.

Eight years ago I had whitening performed by a dentist that worked quite well but the above has reversed this.

On recent dentist visits, they have suggested that traditional whitening treatment may not work as effectively in the past. Their recommendation is veneers.

I am a little concerned at the invasiveness of veneers, risk of the final product looking artificial and weakening the teeth.

How do veneers compare with internal bleaching? (In terms of treatment and effectiveness.)

I am further worried I have no idea where to have this treatment performed in London. How much do either treatments cost? How much time do you need in between appointments?
