Are impressions necessary to get denture?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q. iam going to have a denture fitted but cant stand having impessions done, the last one i had made me gag and the dentist had to remove it. is there anything else he could try,
A. Not really but the way the tray is loaded and the material used makes a big difference. Sometimes sedation is the only way of helping patients cope when they have a sensitive gag reflex

My front teeth are loose should I go for bridge or implants?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
Q. I have had a leaking abcess above my front left crowned tooth … some dentists say it is not a problem as the toxins can get out, but I have noticed that both Front teeth are now loose , is the infection eating into my bone ? I am considering a bridge as I cant afford implantology is that likely to be a problem .

A. Hi many thanks for your email, if you have an abcess then the chances are the infection will be eating the bone. my advice is to get it sorted as soon as possible. a bridge is a good option to replace a missing tooth as long as the teeth holding the bridge are strong and healthy.

What are the options other than implant and plate Plz advice

Monday, October 19th, 2009
Q. Hi Dr Caplan 24 years ago i had 4 crowns fitted, my teeth were uneven before the crowns so the dentist inserted metal posts into my gums the new crowns were fab since then i have had a root canal filling due to reacurring abscess which took several hours 3 years ago one of the metal posts dropped out the dentist did some alterations to the crown and put the post in place he told me it could last one week one month or maybe years depending on how i looked after it and he would not be able to do any further repairs and my options would be a inplant or a denture the post has dropped out again it is next to sound tooth and a crown ,what are my options i cannot afford a inplant and do not want a plate thank you

A. Your only othe roption will be to have a bridge to replace the failing crown/crowns

I have gaps b/w my front teeth Plz help

Monday, October 19th, 2009
Q. I was diagnosed with gum disease over a year ago and i’ve now been told apart from my loose teeth my gums are well improved. my problem is i have prominent gaps between my front 2 teeth top an bottom and i don’t know what can be done to help. my dentist has told me eventually they will fall out. i hate smiling and i hate my teeth.

A. Hi many thanks for your email, if the teeth will eventually fall out it maybe that you may want to explore the option of having them removed and thinking about dental implants to replace them or a removable denture so the aesthetics is better. hopr this is helpful.

What dental procedures follow after taking impressions?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009
Q. After you go to the dentist, they do the impression, what happens after that, because i have another three appointments to follow, why, thank you

A. There are many reasons why a dentist would take an impression so I would need to have an indication of what type of treatment you are having to give you advice.

Kind regards

my dentist informed that my root will not support post crown what could be the problem

Saturday, May 30th, 2009
Q. After a severe fall I lost 2 dental crowns on the left lower side of my mouth. My dentist has informed me that my roots will not support post crowns and that I will have to have a saddle denture. I am deeply unhappy about this. Is there an alternative -and what could be the problem with my roots?

A. If the roots are infected, mobile or cracked then they won’t hold a crown. You could consider removing the teeth and using dental implants to hold new teeth in the area. This maybe more comfortable than a denture.

i live in norfolk and i would like to have mini implants or implants fitted with out cutting gum

Monday, May 11th, 2009
Q. Good evening Andrew, I had a bridge on my bottom pallet,a infection occured, went to a local dentist for implants, took a impression, while removing the mould, all bottom teeth came loose(8)now 12 months on with no bottom teeth, I would like to have mini implants fitted, or implants where, the cutting of gums is avoided, i am 58 and healthy, I run a footwear buissnes, so time off work is difficult,I live in norfolk, parents live billericay, kind regards

A. Hi With very careful planning it is possible to arrange implants without cuttiing the gums although this is only a very minor operation. Mini implants can be used to stabilise a denture but not for fixed teeth.
I would be very happy to see you to give you a full assessment and plan of your options as my practice is fairly close in Essex. Please feel free to e-mail me on enquiry@advancedentalclinic.com or call the practice on 01245 268 494 and we can arrange an appointment Regards  Andrew

i had impression to my teeth but my teeth has gone more yellow is this possible?

Friday, May 8th, 2009
Q. Hello today I have impressions done to my teeth and you might think I have gone crazy but I notice that my teeth hasa gone more yellow. Is this possible? moreover I have noticed that a bit of my shiny cover (enamel?) is gone from one of my teeth. Is the technique so agressive that this is likely to happen? I am quite frustrated because i did it to get a night guard to stop me grinding in the night and now I don’t know if it was such a good idea… Thanks for comments

A. Very unlikely that the impression could cause this. Often the teeth look different due to minor dehydration, this recovers in a day or 2

i have no bone structure on the lower jaw to support dentures is implants the only option?

Friday, May 8th, 2009
Q. I am 56 years of age and have had debtures since I was 21 years of age. I had a check up today to see if my dentures could be religned as the bottom denture is moving around my mouth really bad I was informed that it would not make much improvement although my gums are healthy I have no bone structure at all on the lower jaw and she has suggested an operation to insert an implant of a source which would enable my jaw to support a denture but it would cost around £3,000 to £4,000 I am on benefits can you suggest anything else? I am so desperate and have hated having dentures all my life.

A. Unfortunately once you have lost bone support the only really good solution is to have implants if possible

can i have mini implants fitted the same time my teeth are taken out

Monday, April 20th, 2009
Q. I have been told that my bottom 4 middle teeth will have to come out can i have mini implants fitted the same time my teeth are taken out.and a denture fitted

A. A min-implant retained denture is a possibility, but I guess by showing your concern already that maybe this is not the best option for yourself. Implant retained crowns/bridge may be your answer. (depending on if you have sufficient bone levels)
You need to feel entirely comfotable with the treatment you have been proposed- I would advise a consultation with a cosmetic dentist to get other options.
Hope I have been useful.

IN ALL I HAVE LOST SIX TEETH AT THREE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q. IN ALL I HAVE LOST SIX TEETH AT THREE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. WHAT IS THE BEST POSSIBLE TREAMENT. IAM SIXTY TWO YEARS IN AGE

A. The best option for missing teeth is dental implants.  You would need to be fully assessed to see if you are suitable which would mean some x-rays.  Implants are the longest lasting restorations you can have.  If the teeth adjacent to the spaces are healthy another option would be dental bridges, the downside of this is that they rely on the strength of you other teeth.  Your final option would be dentures.

hello i have had many fillings in my 40 years

Thursday, December 11th, 2008
Q. Hello,i have had many fillings in my 40 years ive recently had a front tooth taken out which had a root filling and a terrible mess made fitting a false tooth almost half the size of my other tooth cause of the impression im looking fow vaneers i think for a nice smile how much would this cost?? i have holes at least 2 plus discoloured teeth and as i say alot of fillings A LOT thank you

A. It is difficult to quote without an examination. Some practice like ours offer a free initial consultation with a dentist to give you some options with guide prices. i recommend getting two or three quotes before deciding on the best treatment ( and cost ) for you.
Finance may be available for larger items

hi i have a fear of being sick gagging

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008
Q. Hi i have a fear of being sick and gagging etc. i had my teeth removed at the age of 21 and i have needed false but i’ve tried to go back for the impressions but the first time i had a panic attack because the impression made me gag and i’m really scared to go back. can you have the impression done any other way so i don’t have to have somethin in my mouth.

A. You are not the only person with this problem. In my practice i have treated a number of people with gagging problems one method that works really well is having IV sedation, some medicine is put into your arm and it allows you to relax you are still awake and in complete control but because you are more relaxed we can take impressions and xrays that normally you would not tolerate.  I think this would be a great option for you.

hello my dentist forgot to take a first impression

Sunday, October 26th, 2008
Q. Hello my dentist forgot to take a first impression before he removed my temp filling an filed my tooth down for the final impression on the bottom 2nd molar is this a problem i should be aware of thank you

A. I am a little confused by the question. A “before” impression is not essential for most crown preparation cases, normally a impression of the shaped tooth, the opposing arch teeth and a record of the way the teeth meet would be sent.

What are the side effects of teeth bleaching I want them really white

Saturday, June 28th, 2008
Q. I’m getting my teeth bleached as of Wednesday, i had the tray impressions done last week, i’m hoping also hoping to start champix as of end of kids school holidays, i was wondering what the pros and cons are and what side effects there is also how long or how many nights do i have to wear the mould for, i do want my teeth looking as white and bright as possible.

A. The protocols vary for different bleaching systems. In my surgery the patient has night time bleaching for 14 nights followed by power bleaching on the 15 th day. We find this gives the best results.
