Gum tissue exposed when I smile Plz advice

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Q. Hi Iam intersted in sorting out my high lip line that shows off too much gum tissue when I smile. I notice you already have an article on this matter, but I owuld like to know if there is a clinic that proforms this out side london, such as Leeds, Manchester or Sheffield. I look forward to your reply Regards

A. hi ,

i am unaware of an clinics in the north that perform lip repositioning surgery. i relatively inexpensive way to achieve this without surgery is botox to lower the gummy smile. this is not permanant but will give you a fantastic result for a fraction of the cost with no surgery.

I have a gummy smile can i get them corrected?

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Q. Hi, I have a 3mm overbite with a 2mm overjet. I have a gummy smile I want to correct. My teeth are straight for the most part but I wanted to know if lingual braces can correct the overbite and in hopes to correct my gummy smile if any. I was also wondering if my teeth are pretty straight and I have to do orthognathic surgery to correct this issue if I can have braces for 6 months and then have the surgery. I would prefer lingual though to give me less of a “horsey” smile.Thanks.

A. It is unlikely that braces can correct a gummy smile, it sounds like you may need some surgery either lip repositioningsurgery or more complex orthognatic surgery. It would be worth asking your dentist to refer you to an oral surgeon or a dentist with experience in this type of correction. Lingual braces would still be possible although not all orthodontists can do them.

hypermobile high lip line surgery

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Q. hi there, when i smile i show lots of gum. my top lip seems to lift to far up. i’ve looked on the net and come across hypermobile high line lip surgery but cant find anywhere that does it. is it a cosmetic dentist i need as they don’t seem to know what im talking about they keep saying gum contouring but its not that!!! can you point me in the right direction and any idea on price. please help

A. Dear T,
The person you want to speak to is a dentist called Peter Fairbairn. He has lectured on this subject in the UK and is the only dentist I know of who carries out this procedure. This procedure was first performed in the 1970’s so its not a new procedure as such. Have a look at his web site – scarsdaledental.co.uk .

He gives an estimate of £800 for lip repositioning but this may have changed since the web site was edited.

Hope this helps and please mention my name to Peter – always good to know who is supporting you.
