I have many dental problems due to gingivitis, can you recommend any treatment?

Monday, March 29th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Caplan I had aggressive gingivitis which has been made worse by smoking. I had my gums thoroughly cleaned and was told to stop smoking. After a few months, I reverted back to smoking and my gums became worse. I’ve recently been the dentist and had my teeth cleaned and am on corsodyl mouthwash to help my gums. I have reasonably good oral care, but my gums have been damaged. There are a few small, but noticeable, gaps between some of my teeth which have formed because of the gum receeding. I’ve stopped smoking and am finishing the prescription of corsodyl. My teeth have been badly stained by smoking. I wanted to know if you thought whether teeth whitening was an option or is it too dangerous given my gum problems to date? I know home teeth whitening kits don’t recommend people with gum problems to use them, but would professional whitening be possible? I would also be open to the possiblity of restorative cosmetic surgery? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m only in my late 20′s and not being able to smile or laugh without feeling really self-conscious about my teeth and gums is having a huge impact on my self-confidence and my life in general. Many thanks.,

Is cost of hygiene treatment at private practice accurate?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Q.
I am registered at a private dentist and currently have a Maternity Exemption. I thought all my routine check ups and hygienic treatments should be free while my Exemption card still valid but my dentist said that the hygienic treatments are not free even with the NHS exemption. The thing is they don’t do the hygienic treatment in one go but asked me to do it in 4 visits and that means I have to pay 4 times. Is that right for them to do that? Many thanks,

Will scaling cause damage to ceramic metal crowns?

Monday, March 15th, 2010
Q.
Dear Sir, my front tooth have been replaced with ceramic metal crowns two years back. Now that i want to go for scaling, i have a doubt that if scaling is done to those crowns it may damage and erode the ceramic coating on metallic crowns. Please clarify my doubt. Thankyou.,

Do you have any advice about getting my teeth whitened?

Friday, February 26th, 2010
Q.
Hello doctor, I am a teenager of 15 years of age and I have neglected my teeth for a few years since maybe the age of 7 or 8 where I only brushed once a day or once every other day and I am ashamed to say that I have only just started to think about doing something about it. This has caused stains on my teeth from a young age which have never gone which leads me to fear that these stains are maybe quite deep. I have started an oral hygiene regime in which I’m using Arm and Hammer Advanced Whitening toothpaste and Plax Mouthwash. My question is therefore, do you have any advice or information concerning what I can do to get my teeth healthier and whiter (especially!) and any specific products that would help my teeth stains disappear? Thanks.,

What can be done about bleeding gums and crooked teeth?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
Q.
Hello Mr.Moore I am quite concerned with the health and severity of the condition of my teeth/gums. Whilst brushing, my gums bleed quite severly, and in some areas have become enflamed and very very sensitive…even though i am using mouth wash. Additionally small food gets stuck inbetween some of my teeth leaving a nasty smell in my mouth. My teeth are quite crooked and are becoming a hastle for me. I am desperately wanting to get them fixed but i do not know where to turn. Thank you, regards james,

Why is veneer already stained only a week after getting it?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010
Q.
I had a composite veneer on a front tooth a few weeks ago which has a slight small brown stain appearing on the bottom already. I have cut out tea, coffee and red wine but have used Corsodyl mouthwash for gum problems which I understand can stain the teeth. I use Sensodine toothpaste for my teeth but believe this is not suitable for my composite bonded tooth. Should I be using two different toothpastes?,
