Need a nice smile please suggest treatment

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Q. I had root canal on my bottom front tooth which was a grey colour, i since had my teeth bleached and was told to inject the tooth after the bleaching procedure using the trays and bleach provided. This didnt work and the tooth looks terrible compared to my other teeth which are white. What do you suggest? I just want a nice smile.

A. Thanks for your question, you may wish to consider having the tooth veneered. A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain which is made to fit over the front surface of the tooth, and can be used to improve the colour, shape, size and overall aesthetic appearance of a tooth or teeth. The veneer would be made to match the whitened shade of your other teeth, to give a uniform look to your smile. I hope this helps.

I have yellow teeth what can I do to get them presentable?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Q. i have extremely yellow teeth. i dont smoke, drink tea or coffe so i dont understand why my teeth should be so yellow. please could you tell me why this is happening and what i could do to get them a bit more presentable in other words whiter. please answer me as soon as possible because i need to start smiling with confidence thankyou.

A. The yellowness of your teeth is based on the proportion of enamel to dentine and the water content of the dentine.  A simpler way to treat this is to have your teeth professionally bleached by a dentist.  Treatment can take from 2 weeks to 6 months depending on the type of internal stain

Do you have any opinions on the various teeth whitening systems?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. Hi there, My teeth have been yellow for as long as I can remember. (I first became aware when I was 11 or 12, I am now 44.) On and off over the years I have tried various home kits/toothpastes with no success, I have also been to a dentist and had the Britesmile treatment done approximately 3 years ago which also proved very disappointing. I have seriously considered having veneers (Lumineers) but one dentist suggested that I should try the Enlighten whitening system first as my teeth are fairly straight, its only the colour that lets them down. From this do you have any suggestions or opinions on the various whitening systems that may help me?

A. The main thing is time exposure to a low concentration of bleach.  This can take up to 6 months to get a reaonable result in heavily stained teeth effected by tetracycline antibiotics – I suspect that this is what has caused your teeth to be so stained.

Q. I just had a root canal done. I used Bleaching gel to white my teeth is that a good idea what the chances of me geeting an infection in my canal

A. please consult your dentist, usually it is fine to whitening teeth that have had Root canals, however it may be that the tooth has not had the treatment completed and in this case i would not recommend it. When having treatment carried out always ask your dentist any questions you may have pre and post treatment.

Can u advice me on the best products/procedures available for whitening?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Q. Hi Rob, I am considering in-surgery whitening and wondered if you could advise on the best products/procedure available? (highest quality/results possible) How long it lasts? A good cost benchmark etc? My teeth are in good shape so i have ruled out veneers as i think whitening will give me the results i’m after. In particular i have heard of a “bio” laser treatment but have found very little info (I assume then that this is just the normal Zoom style treatment of gel + laser). I am based in Birmingham so would appreciate any recommendations for a surgery to go to! Many thanks in anticipation of your help! Regards

A. Zoom! advance power is the best surgery product that I have come across. There is more competition in the home systems. StJohns Birmingham is located at 18 Bennett’s Hill on the corner with New St ( were the christmas market starts ) We offer a free initial assesment call Amy 01216430610 for details.

A gel for hardening gums

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Q. Hi Can you tell me please where I can buy the gel for gums that hardens to protect my gums and lips when I use my home kit please ?

A. That gel is only for in-surgery bleraching when 40% hydogen peroxide is used.  For homw bleaching the gel is usually 16% carbamide peroxide – this breaks down to about 5% hydrogen peroxide which is safe to use without gum protection

does the teeth whitening treatment cover all teeth or is it just the front teeth?

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Q. I want to buy my wife teeth whitening for her birthday. Does the treatment cover all teeth or is it just the front teeth? Also, I understand that the laser treatment id non abrasive and does not damage the enamel – is this right? Finally, I am assuming that al full mouth treatment is likely to be more like £700 rather than £300 – is this right? Many thanks

A. There are several whitening options on the market.
The one that I would recommend is a system called ‘ENLIGHTEN’
This system is to done every night over 2 weeks with some home trays that fit over the teeth. whitening solution is applied into these trays.
After the 2 weeks, then there is an in-office application- where your wife will bring her home trays and a much stronger soltion is then applied. 3 applications of 20 minutes will be applied to the teeth and then the whitening course is complete. This option is much more predictable and the whitest shades can be achieved. The cost of ENLIGHTEN at my practice is £650. And yes, this covers all of the teeth in the arch, not just the front ones!
The other system that we find is quite popular, is the system called ZOOM!
It is solely performed in-surgery under a laser lamp. It is convenient and effective. the cost of this system is £450.
I would however stress that any fillings, crowns and veneers will not change colour through the whitening, and would advise a consultation to assess which system will be more suitable. Hope this informtion has helped.

my teeth are discolored

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Q. I am a 52 year old woman whose teeth were discolored when my mother took Tetracycline during pregnancy. They are not badly discolored, but far from being white. Do you think the Enlighten system would help my discoloration?

A. Broadly speaking yes but in may take a longer time to get the results that you are looking for.  Possibly 2 to 3 months of night time bleaching.  The alternative of veneers is a possiblity to cover the stain.

There are numerous types of dentistry whitening methods

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Q. There are numerous types of dentistry whitening methods available.. Which is the most effective? and cost?

A. Bleaching relies on exposure of the tooth to oxygen from a chemical  ( carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide).  In my surgery we use a combination of home bleaching and power whitening to produce the best end result.

my two front teeth are i feel long

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Q. my two front teeth are, i feel, long. i have had an idea to file them down. is this possible? another thing is, i would get my teeth whitened, but i feel that it would be to expensive in the clinic, so would you advice me buying a branded one, if so, could you recommend it to me? thank you for your time.

A. Hi You could only file  a very small amount of enamel from the teeth before they are damaged and sensitive, I wouldn’t recommend this done at home!!
Shop bought tooth whitening is very hit and miss, whitening tooth pastes tend to remove stain only and can cause abrasion of the enamel resulting in more stain build up in the future. it might be worth investing in good quality professional whitening at a dentist

Which teeth whitening – bleaching system should I use ?

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I am looking into getting my teeth whitened – but with so many different procedures out there i am little confused on which is the best and safest option to take. Healing Hands do Professional laser teeth whitening in 1hr – would you recommend laser teeth whitening or would the home kit be the best option? please advise. Thanks in advance.

You are quite right there are a myriad of bleaching techniques and products available and it can be extremely difficult even for a dentist to decide on the right type. There are dentists who swear by one technique and others by another technique. In my experience the home bleaching has the best effect and uses a much lower concentration of bleach in comparison to the “laser” bleaching.
