What Supplements Can I Take for Stronger Bone and Gum Health?

Monday, February 2nd, 2015
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes. I have always looked after my teeth but have been told that genetics play a big part in all my dental problems. Are there any supplements apart from vitamin D and magnesium that would help me to create stronger bone and gum health? My problems are mainly gum ones even though I floss, use fluoride toothpaste and brush 3 times a day. I am 47 years old and have had 4 gum infections, three root canals and 5 crowns in the last 10 years. I go for regular cleaning etc. every 3 months. All my family have teeth problems and that is why the dentist thinks it’s genetic. My gums never look healthy even though I work really hard to keep them clean. Thank you.

My Mother Has a Hole in Her Gum. What Can We Do to Help Her?

Thursday, September 11th, 2014
Q.

Hello. I am from Nepal and am sending in a question on behalf of my mother. My mother has developed a hole in the end of her gums recently.

It is swollen and she is suffering from a fever.

She is forty years old. Is this problem serious or is it a minor problem? Should we take her to a dental specialist or to a mouth specialist or even a hospital?

We are confused, so please help us. It’s causing her a lot of pain and she is not able to open her mouth.

I would really appreciate your kindness in offering some advice so we know what to do.
We really want to make the right decision for her. Thank you.

I Am Absolutely Petrified Of The Dentist! What Can I Do As I Need Treatment?

Friday, September 6th, 2013
Q.

Hi, my problem is that I am absolutely petrified of the dentist. I tend to go twice a year and let the dentist look and the last time I went I started to have a clean but nearly I passed out I was that scared. Now I have a loose back tooth which is really very painful. My face is swollen and I can’t eat on that side so you can imagine this is a hindrance. I am on immunosuppression and on warfarin and I know both of these can possibly affect my gums. I have got to the stage where I will have anything done and I want to know if I can be put to sleep during the procedures I need, is that possible? Thank you for your time.
