Q. would you be able to mend my teeth idf I am a grinder, I grind my teeth across my dentist told me. would it be possible to do my 2 front teeth with Cerec, I need a good smile this is ageing me terribly
A.
It should be possible to have your front teeth veneered or crowned to improve their appearance. However I would recommend that once you have had this procedure, you should wear a nightguard. This will help to protect the restorations, and prevent you from grinding them down.
Many Thanks

Q. I suffer from severe teeth grinding and i also have bad gum disease although i am only 34 and have never had a filling. i went away travelling and have not seen a dentist for over 5 years. i would like to know if i am treatable and what my options are for a smile makeover as my teeth are now yellowing, there is some movement and the gums are tender sometimes, I have started to become very self conscious and upset about it. Can veneers be fitted if someone has gum disease, what costs am i looking at or do you think i need false teeth?
A. hi many thanks for your email, it is difficult to say whether your teeth are savable or not the best thing would be to come for a free consultation where i can assess your mouth and give you some options on how to improve things for you.

Q. i seem to have a habbit of pushing my front teeth with my tongue and then pushing them back again and now, i find myself doing it all day without realizing it and now i think one of my front teeth are shaky, it seems to move a bit more now, out of place when i push it and instead of stopping, i do it alot more now to see if it really is shaky or not. im terrified as im only 21. what can i do if they fall out? i also grind my back teeth in my sleep and during the day which is a new thing during the day. what are dental implants? are they screw ins? if my teeth come out could i get them on nhs? in the morning i feel as though if i just push my teeth theyl pop out so i try to avoid doing that 1st thing in the morning. im terrified on dental jags so cant go to dentist, i would go if i could get put to sleep tho, please help
A. Start by forcing yourself to visit 3 different practices that seem friendly to anxious patients. You can be adamant that you only want an opinion not treatment. ( check prices for assesment before you go )
One of them will feel better and more in tune with you. Then start with some simple treatment to boost your confidence.

Q. pls help im very worried, just got back from my nhs dentist my gums have started to pull away from some teeth, my dentist said this is due to my age, but im only 27, in the past i did brush to hard, my biggist mistake, i have booked an apoinment at red sky dental spar this is a cosmetic dentist, could they help me to retore my gums around some teeth that have reseeded thanks
A. hi msny thanks for your enquiry, firstly if your gums have receeded around some teeth this can be caused by a number of factors: hard brushing, grinding teeth, stress, gum disease, poor oral hygiene, hereditary. My advice would be to seek a consultation with a periodontist who is more qualified to discuss your recession and also give you some predictable solutions. Red Sky Dental are a good cosmetic practice however have no speciality in periodontics.

Q. I had a root canal about 5 years ago, earlier this year I developed an infection in the gum above this tooth. Xrays show that the end of a metal tool was left in the gum. Is it possible that my dentist was not aware of this, as I think it unlikely. She never told me about it and I have been told that I must have the tooth extracted due to the infection. This dentist also broke off a drill bit under my sisters tooth, who had to go to the dental hospital to fix it so this is by no means a one off. Is this a regular thing that happens? Is there anyway, seeing as part of one of her tools would be missing, she would have not known about this to inform me. Another dentist has told me that I can take it further, is there a ‘offcom’ for dentists? And as I now face a large bill to sort this how would I go about trying to make a claim of she was at fault.
A. I would go back tothe original dentist to see if you can come to some arrangement regarding paying for the new treatment. You may need to take a copy of the x-ray to show the dentist what is going on. This is usually the easiest way to sort out a dispute regarding treatment.

Q. I currently have temporary veneers on. I have had them on four weeks as I needed some gum work completing. They have become very damaged and a couple have dropped off. Is this common or is it likely grinding my teeth may be causing this?
A. Temporary veneers are very problematic, made wo
rse by tooth grinding. I would pop back to your dentist to see if they can do anything to hold them on more permanently.

Q. I grind my teeth at night for this i now wear a bit plate which has helped the problem now is my teeth have become promanant can any thing be done
A. Book an appointment with your dentist and ask hi if a different type of nightguard can be made. Perhaps one that just sits on your anterior teeth holding the posterior open.
Kind regards

Q. I wanted a pretty smile so I had my upper 4 front teeth fitted with veneers a little over a year now. The veneers were way to long and bulky. I looked like Buggs Bunny and talked with a hisp. The dentist and I have yelled at each other. He said he will not replace them but keeps grinding them down. I have had pain and throbbing ever since, especially at night (I do wear a night guard because I clench my teeth). The pain at night keeps me awake. I cannot lay on my back or my side without feeling like my front teeth are being pushed around. I cannot get releif. The teeth look OK now but the throbbing at night won’t go away. What do you suggest? I really depressed about this.
A. Please come and see me for a free cosmetic consultation to allow me to assess your problems and hopefully find a solution for you.

Q. Can teeth grinding be corrected with Invisalign? And does a dentist have to have special training in Invisalign care?
A. Teeth grinding is basically an in built trait of some people. It seems to be related to stress but there is no treatment presently available to stop people grinding. However the damaging effects of tooth wear can be reduced or prevented by a patient wearing a protective splint over their teeth.
Invisalign treatment does require special training for a dentist to provide this type of care

Q. Hi,I have recently been told by my dentist that the damage to my teeth is caused by grinding during the night. This is evident as i have very bad wear on my two front teeth. They are a lot shorter than my other top teeth and have formed an arch shape. It has got to the stage where people are noticing and i am reluctant to smile.I have been given a night guard to wear but i feel my teeth need to be treated with caps or veneers as well as the further protection that the guard will give, what do you recommend?
A. It depends on how severe your bite and grinding habits are. You may well require a combination of veneers and crowns if other teeth in your mouth are also worn. A night guard would be required after treqtment to protect your new smile

Q. I need crowns on my 7 front teeth. What type of crowns whould you recomend?
A. There are various types of crowns : feldspathic, Pressed ceramic, Emax. zirconium, procera, porcelain bonded to metal. Aestheically the first 3 are the best provided the bite and underlying colour allow

Q. Hi I grind my teeth (bottom row) at night and my dentist has told me the only treatment is dentures or teeth implants can you please let me know if there is any other treatment such as crowns or veneers. I am an extremely nervous patient. I thank you in advance for your help.
A. If the supporting structures to your teeth have been severely damaged ( predominately the bone) then implants or dentures may be necessary. If you have worn teeth only crowns may be an option. Please contact my pratice if you wish for a second opinion and possibly treatment. I have treatment many wear cases with great success

Q. When i was 11 i had a brace, it was,to pull my 4 top incisors out as they were not curved, but straight, making my canines look like fangs. This was a removable brace, with an extra piece at night that went round my head.Anyway, it didnt work and nothing else was done, i dont know why. It has bothered me ever since. i am almost 40 now, and i put my hand over my mouth when i laugh and try not to show my teeth. Can anything be done, either to my incisors or canines..ie filing them as they look longer than my insisors, making it look worse. Thank you for your time.
A. veneers can be used to reshape teeth after grinding down. guide price $350-700 per tooth. often the front six teeth are done as group so you may multiply by 6 or 10. Rob

Q. Last year I had a bridge fitted. The dentist used only the tooth to the right of the gap to fit the bridge to. However, whilst it looks good i find it most uncomfortable. I have been told that I am a heavy grinder although I didnt realise I did grind my teeth until this bridge was fitted and I find I am constantly grindnig on this bridge. Whereas before I was told that I only ground my teeth at night. I feel the bridge is coming loose as I can feel it moving slightly at times and when I floss underneath it I sometimes feel like I have slightly put it out of place but it usually goes back to normally within a few minutes. I would like it replaced or maybe refitted to both teeth either side instead of just the one on the right of it. The gap is, on my right side, the 3rd from my front tooth and the bridge is fitted to the 4th tooth to my right. Any advice or suggestions would be great, but I couldnt afford an implant, so thats out of the question for me. Many thanks for your help
A. I agree that an implant would be the best option it would also last the longest so is the best value overall. Finance options are available to help you spread costs. It sounds like your bridge is moving and because it is only supported on one side is not as secure. It also sounds like the bridge is too high in your bite, which could be causing the grinding. My only concern about another bridge using two teeth to support it is that you have to cut down another healthy tooth.

Q. Hi I am quite upset about recent findings from 2 different dentists that I have severe acid erosion and bruxism. 2 years ago I had no problems at all, although my diet/drinking habits have not changed. There are no problems with my gums or x-rays and I have never had a filling so now I am gutted about this. What I’d like to know is that I have been told different things by different dentists about the effects of swimming on teeth. I swim 3 times a week for 1 1/2 hours a time. This has been a new thing over the last 2 years. Could this be the problem and how can I check the PH levels of my local pool? My current dentist is insisting that I grind my teeth but I do not believe this to be true but at one time I was on a high dose of Citalopram and have read that this can cause grinding and I think it did in my case. I was on this for about 3-4 years. I am also a vegetarian and have been told this is the problem!!!??? so confused. What can I do and can I prevent further damage. I cannot stop swimming as this is now for me a form of anti-depressant. I am miserable. Thanks for you help.
A. From your post it would seem that the two key factors here are the medication, which may trigger grinding, and your diet
Many vegetarians have diets with high acidic fruit content eg oranges, lemons, grapefruits
The combination of teeth grinding and acid erosion can cause rapid tooth destruction.
I would recommend going through a diet analysis with your dentist and at the least a nightguard to prevent further grinding on already weakened teeth

Q. the top surface of my two middle bottom teeth are starting to wear away. What is the best solution for this from a cosmetic point of view, i go regularly to the dentist and he has never said anything about it, so I dont know if it is a problem I should be concerned about, it may be due to teeth grinding? Also the last time I went to the dentist and had a clean and he said it removed some of the enamel at the bottom inside of my middle lower teeth, this area has now never felt quite right since this, leaving a rough feeling – is there anything I can get done about this.
A. I don’t think he would have removed any of the enamel although the teeth can feel a bit differnet after a throrough scale. You have 2 options for the worn tooth, you might be able to stop the wear by wearing a bite guard at night or you may need to restore the teeth with crowns or veneers

Q. Dr. Bohara, I have a permanent bridge put on by a dentist in 2005. In 2009, it is broken. I paid $3000. She says that the bridge broke due to my grinding. The bridge has also damaged the bottom tooth. I consulted another dentist and he says that the bridge should be replaced at no cost to me. I went to the original dentist and she said that because I grind my teeth I broke the bridge and also have worn out my bottom tooth. She said that she would replace the bridge for 1/2 the price of $3,000. What are dental patients’ rights???? I did not like her office and I did not like her. I’ve also moved and I’m now 3hrs away. Thanks for your guidance.
A. Unfortunately dental treatment can fail and a hundred percent guarantee cannot be given. There are many reasons why treatment can fail. If you seek treatment somewhere else, rather than her office then you would be required to pay the full price rather the quotation the dentist gave you. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Q. Hello I do grin my teeth in the night and was wondering whether I coul use a SleepRight Dental Guard Comfort by SleepRight. Is it save? How long can you use it for? they say it is a product that has been approved by the British Dental Health Foundation. Any advise will be vey welcome thanks
A. Some people find wearing an appliance at night reduces the amount of tooth grinding there are so many different devices available I am afraid it is difficult to give you advice without seeing you. These appliances are non-invasive so you have nothing to loose by trying it. I would recommend seeing a dentist who understands how the jaw works as 90% of tooth grinding is often due to an uneven bite.
