Q. I would like some advice on dental treatment which I maybe entitled to . Please could you tell me if and when I have fillings and a crown put in can I have it done in white because I am on benefit , I don’t like gold tooth even though it is at the back and because I am young. I suffer from epilepsy and am on benifits, does that mean i get free dental treatment?
A. NHS direct can give details specific to your benefits. generally it is for th dentist to provide treatment that works , the cosmetic appearance is not a factor. Rob

Q. I want to get a white gold tooth fitted, (lateral inscisor) merely for fasion purposes so to speak and i want to know 1. do i go to a regualr dentist to get this done, if not where? 2. roughly how much could this cost? 3. i live in mitcham – south west london, could u recommend anywhwere nearby i could get this done? much appreciated
A. hi many thanks for your email, my advice would be have the treatment done via a cosmetic dentist, the cost can vary from practice to practice but expect to pay between £600 – £1000 for the tooth, the only dentist i can recommend highly is Dr Riten Patel of the Mulberry clinic in surrey. hope this is helpful.

Q. I have a front gold crown tooth about 18 years and i would like to have it remove from my tooth. I had x-rays done last year and i have no tooth decay. Should i have the crown just removed and use teeth whiting or have them bleach?
A.
When the gold crown is taken off it will need to be replaced with a porcelain crown that will be matched into the rest of your teeth. If you are not happy with the shade of your teeth then you could whiten them first and then have the crown made to match the new shade of your teeth.
Kind regards

Q. Hello, i have a question about a crown i had fitted after root canal treatment and it is gold (at the back of my mouth) however it can still be seen when i smile, i have braces fitted at the moment and would just like to ask you would it be possible to get it covered in some way after my braces are removed? Thankyou
A. The only way to have a tooth coloured restoration would be to have a new crown made out of a tooth coloured material – sorry

Q. Hi. Can I purchase a temporary cover for my gold crown. I would like to cover it when I go on interviews. I got it 16 years ago and it was recommended by my dentist. Now I am a bit concerned about it because of all of the hype associated with having a gold. Of course I am not a kid, but when I go on job interviews i am not sure if it affects how the employer sees me even though I am dressed very nice. Thank You.
A. Really you need to have it replaced with a tooth coloured crown – especially if you will feel more confident in a job interview

Q. I had my root canal retreated. I have a gold crown and the retreatment was drilled thru the top of the gold crown, can the crown be filled with a gold filling?
A. Yes it can but the cost benefit is less than replacing the crown. A simple amalgam can be used as a short term repair as an alternative.

Q. I have a front gold tooth that I want to remove. It’s 13 years old and has chipped at the tip. I am a professional now and attending board meetings with “important” people, where I do not want the stigma that associates with having a gold tooth. 1) Should I choose a white/pocelain crown OR do a single tooth implant? 2) Should I whiten my OTHER teeth before replacing the gold with a white/porcelain crown? 3) Or do you suggest something else?
A. if you are unhappy with the colour of your teeth then whiten them first.
if the tooth under the crown is very dark you may want to consider a porcelain fused to metal crown but near the gum over time you tend to see a black line , if your dentist feels he can hide a dark stump of tooth with an allporcelain crown then this will not have a dark line at the gum,
consider attending the lab for a shade match
only consider an implant if the tooth needs to be removed

No mercury in crowns but > 60% gold content (rest mainly precious) is best.

Q. hello, i am enquiring about silver crowns at the moment i have 2 white gold teeth on the front i have had them for about 7 years but have just realised in my reliogion its not permissible for men to have white gold in any shape or form is it possible for me to get these taken out and get 2 silver crowns on only reason asking my freind told me you cant have siver crowns appreciate your reply. Thank you
A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, most dental metals do contain some amounts of gold. the best thing would be to discuss your requirements with your dentist, it maybe possible to have platinium teeth made as apposed to silver.

Q. I have a query concerning filling. I have 10 silver filling put in over the last 10 years (I’m 27) but I am concerned about the safety of them – due to the mercury – and I’m thinking about getting them replaced with white filling which I believe do not contain any mercury. Is this a sensible thing to do, or in your opinion unnecessary? Does removing old filling and replacing them with white ones present any problems in itself which I should be aware of? Many Thanks
A. There is no research to back the removal of amalgam fillings because of a theoretical risk of amalgam poisoning. There are rare cases of allergy to mercury. If you do decide to have them removed there can be problems with standard plastic white fillings( composites) if the cavity is large. These may need to have porcelain fillings ( or possibly gold) for long term stability.

Q. I experience a pain in my mouth where I have had a porcelan bridge for over 10 years. The dentist says I have a crack in the crown and that causes the pain when I bite down. He wants to replace the bridge with a gold bridge. After the insurance pays half of the cost I am still going to pay around $1500 for the gold bridge. I assume he intends to replace the existing crowns with gold crowns. I’m 71 I probably won’t be around for 10 years. I have a heart failure condition (stage I) and prostate cancer which is gowing very slowly. He says he strongly recommends gold because it will last a long time. The bridge I have now has lasted me over 20 years! I don’t get it. Why shouldn’t I get the same type of bridge I have now? How much cheaper would porcelan be. The gold is costing $3,000 (before 50% insurance is deducted) With the price of gold these days, it’s no wonder. If I were a dentist in this situation , I’d recommend the same bridge I have now, wouldn’t you? Please give me your comments
A. The cost of bridge work is predominately in the thechniques and the skill involved adn not so much in the material. In fact a gold bridge is quicker to make than a porcelain fused to metal bridge. It is quite possible that theis second type of bridge will be more expensive. It really comes down to your prefernce unless your teeth have become heavlily worn due to age or /and grinding problems. If this is the case a gold bridge is the best option for strength.
