Can gold crown be removed?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
Q. hi there…i’ve had a gold crown fitted on my tooth since july but i now want it off…is that possible and what are the procedures and costs…the thing is when i went to the dentist i only wanted a little gap closed but the dentist suggested the crown…i’ve tried to get used to it but i can’t,
A. You could only have the corwn replaced with another crown, the tooth has been prepared underneath so cannot be left without a crown. Book in with your dentist and ask him the options available for pehaps changing the material the corwn is made of.Kind regardsDr Justi Glaisterwww.umbrellasmiles.com

What are the constituents of gold cap?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. what are the constituents of gold cap and its advantage and disadvantage,
A. Gold crowns vary they do have different amounts of gold.  True gold crowns are still probably the longest lasting crowns I still like to use them at the back of my patients mouth.  Good gold crowns should cost the same as porcelain crowns they are not a cheaper option unless other non precious metals are being used.

After root canal tooth has broken partially can it be fixed?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Rob, Over a year ago I received a root canal on an upper molar while I was in the US, but recently a quarter of the tooth has broken. I was wondering how much it would cost to fix the tooth? Thank you in advance.

A. The average price for crowns and onlays is between £350-800 for private treatment. Assuming that the root canal is secure. Rob

Can bonding cover up visible silver caps?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. My 5 year old daughter had to get 2 silver caps on her lower back teeth they are visible and she is very upset. The kids are starting to tease her at school and they are the only option for treatment. I was wondering if Bonding would stick to the tooth to cover the silver. Looking forward to your response.

A. This is not possible – she must have had very decayed teeth and the silver caps should reduce the chances of her loosing space for her adult teeth in the future.

Would there be any problem in fixing refitted crown which is sticking out?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, I hope you can help me, i have recently had acrown and a veneer fitted on my two front teeth, my crown came out after only a week. my dentist has put it back in with a stronger cement however has pushed it froward when putting it in. now it sticks out further than my other teeth. my dentist has said she can take it out but will have to numb it and there is the chance the root might crack or the crown. do you have any advise on what to do. Thanks

A. You will need to discuss this with your dentist as I cannot assess your situation without examining you- sorry

Need to know positive and negative of root canal treatment.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi I have been diagnosed with a cracked LL7 tooth, and have had a crown put on to stabilise it. We can’t tell if the crack has affected the root or pulp. 4 weeks on after the crown was fitted, I am still suffering grinding, aggressive pain all day in the tooth (though I can get some sleep at night). It’s more acute with hot and cold and sweet foods. I can just about use the tooth, but not to eat anything hard or crunchy, as this is uncomfortable too (though the crown has helped to make it less painful). I am taking painkillers every few hours and am not coping with being in pain all day. My dentist says it can take a few months for nerve pain to diminish after it’s been stirred up, but I can’t stand this kind of pain for much longer. It’s interfering with my quality of life. Would it be best to ask for a root canal to be performed on this tooth so that the pain situation is resolved? Presumably if this is done the tooth cannot hurt anymore? Does having root canal cause any longterm problems for a tooth?

A. If the nerve damage becomes irreversible, root canal would be an obvious choice to consider. The are some drawbacks but the alternative is extraction. Rob

Can old age person have dental implants and teeth whitening?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hello, my mother who is 76 wants to have her front teeth made less prominent.she has been told by her dentist that dental in plants would help and also to have teeth whitening. I was woundering if porcelain cosmetic crownds would be just as good, also cheaper.

A. This may be the case if the teeth underneath are healthy and the gum health is good.  A diagnostic waxup to assess the position of teeth will be necessary before proceeding – hope this helps

Can I send my dental photos for you to suggest a treatment?

Saturday, December 5th, 2009
Q. Hi there – I am 50 and have a crown on one of my front “eye” teeth. It’s 25 years old. My front teeth overproject. My dentist has told me it would be unethical for him to replace my crown without doing about £10,000 of orthodontal work first. I have the detailed photos he took and could send them to you. I would like to improve the appearance of my teeth but am reluctant to do so much to them and in some ways my overbite is beneficial I think to my face shape. I would like a second opinion but if from the sight of the photos I am a hopeless case then I will just keep what I have!

A. Hi, why don’t you send the photos to me on enquiry@advancedentalclinic.com and I’ll take a look

Root has lost small piece can it still support post crown?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. I have post crowns on my two front teeth one i had replaced less than a year ago because it kept coming out it has come out three times since being replaced, and to be honest, although i was told a longer post would solve the problem the post does not look any longer. The root has lost a small piece and i am worried i will end up with no root to put it in to.

A. There comes a time when the root is unable to support a post crown, IF the root is no longer predictable , consider extraction aand replacement with bridges dentures or implants.Rob

Veneers have broken should I consider rebonding a veneer or crown?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. Hi Rob, I have several (5) Veneers . They have lasted be for around 15 years. Recently one has broken ( cracked and 1/3 of it fell off). My dentist would like to replace it with a crown as he is concerned about rebonding a veneer. Personally i would prefer another veneer. is there an expert opinion on the pros and cons of this repair

A. There should be no problem rebonding a veneer , maybe there are some other issues. The pro and cons will relate to the subtle details of the individual and you will need a clinical assement for the second opinion. For more details please contact us directlyRob0121 643 0610.

Due to grinding I have gum receeding and loosing my smile.

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. Dear Dr Tennet, For as long as I can remember I have suffered from bruxism. I sleep with a nightguard which my NHS dentist made for me but my gums seem to be receeding as a result of the grinding, which I think has now led to gum disease, and my upper anterior teeth are becoming very thin and I’m terrified of them snapping off altogether. I’m only 27 and hate my smile. My teeth seem to be wearing down and decaying very quickly and I’m terrified of having to wear a denture. Do you think crowns and possibly gum grafts may help me? I really don’t want to lose my teeth and my NHS dentist doesn’t seem to care.

A. Wear, tooth decay and receeding gums are normally caused by separate problems. It is likely that advanced treatment planning is needed. I can offer a free initial chat at our private practice to assess the likely way forward.Rob0121 643 0610

A. You would need to investigate restorative options , reduce the teeth with a drill then realign with crowns or veneers. Rob

After root filling I have dark line on the gum please advise.

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009
Q. 2 months ago I had my teeth all made into crowns. Where I have a couple of implants and a root filling, there is now a dark line at the gum line. I have told my dentist about it and he says I should brush my teeth and make them bleed. I got a firm toothbrush and have scrubbed these gums and they will not bleed and the dark is still there. Also one of the teeth above these implants and root filling is very sensitive to cold and sometimes if anything hard gets into it it hurts. Because I am 68 years of age and went to the dentist for my teeth to be straightened, a decision was made by the dentist that I was too old for my teeth to be successfully straightened and that it would take a long time, that is why I have a mouthful of crowns. Is there anything I can do to make this ddark line around these 3 teeth disappear?

A. You need to discuss this with your dentist – the implants are made out of titanium and can be difficult to mask if you have thin gums – gums can be thick or thin – this is called their biotype.

Recently done teeth crown causing chewing and biting problem.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009
Q. I recently had a bridge done for a missing tooth. One of the crowned teeth on the end has not felt right since day one. I cannot bite or chew near the bridge, even soft foods. I am afraid to go back to the dentist because I think he was very unprofessional and could he have taken the tooth down too far?

A. It does sound like it needs looking at and he is the best person to check it as he will know what has been left under neath. It sounds like you may need the root treating to stop the bridge feeling tender.
