Q. I am having a root canal treatment for a very sensative back tooth & a crown, this is being done on the nhs but i have to pay. Can you tell me what quality the nhs crown will be & what it is mad of? and do i have a choice ? I ask this because i have a heart condition “AF” [Atrial Fribulation] & i have been told that metal in the mouth such as lead or amalgom can cause this AF that i have. What nhs crown do you suggest i have fitted ?
A. I have seen no scientific evidence to support what you have been told regarding lead or amalgam and atrial fibrillation. I would suggest you discuss this with your cardiac surgeon or doctor to get a clear picture of the facts.

Q. I have been told that after a root canal in one of my lower molars, that now the root has come away from the canal and the other root cannot support the tooth on its own, and therefore the tooth needs to be extracted. My tooth doesn’t feel particularly loose, I’m not in any pain, and I don’t particularly want to loose it and get an implant. Is there anyway that titanium rods can be used in keeping the natural tooth?
A. hi many thanks for your email, if the tooth has split at the roots, although the tooth may not be causing you any pain the consequences of leaving the tooth and not having it extracted could be dyer. my advice would be to have the tooth extracted and then a dental implant as any other option will not be long term.

Q. I have a fractured back tooth. My dentist finds that the nerve is not infected and I agree because it is not sensitive to hot and cold and if the tooth isn’t touched it feels okay. However, my concern is that the tooth is sensitive when under pressure and I presume this is because any pressure allows movement, however small, of the fracture. At the moment I have a temporary crown in place, awaiting a permanent fitting. Would it be expected that when the gold crown is fitted that will stop the ability of the tooth to flex. Can anything be done underneath the crown to gain stability? Many thanks.
A. When teeth have cracks we can never be deinite about whether the nerve has been affected. Your dentist sounds as though he is doing the correct thing for you. You may still need nerve treatment on the tooth if the tooth does not settle down

Q. following treatment for a recurring abscess my dentist has told me i’ve got a fractured root canal. He has taken impressions of my teeth. As a nervous patient what can i expect to happen next?
A. hi many thanks for your email, if the root canal treated tooth has fractured then the next stage of treatment will be to extract the fractured tooth. hope this is helpful.

Q. hello Doc, I am 34 years old and I have a primary tooth between my front tooth and the #2. it protrudes infront the #2, which is still there but twisted behind it. the primary tooth is also shaking slightly. I’ve been to the dentist and i was told i might have to do an extraction. the dentist also gave me this explanation for my top row i hope you can understand. 432112234 the 1s are the two front teeth and they count in both directions as you can see, i have two #2s on the right one of them being the primary tooth… my smile is not one im very proud of so is there any advice you can give me in terms of getting it straightened out? thanks a mil!
A. Its difficult to give you exact ideas without seeing you but one option might be removing the extra tooth and then having them straightened with something like invisalign.

Q. My crown fell off at dinner and now the root canal filling fell out. My dentis t is on vacation and I leave tomorrow “on a jet plane”. Am I in big trouble with the hole.
A. hi many thanks for your email if the tooth has been root canal treated then there is no infected nerve in the tooth to cause you severe pain. however as soon as you can i would try to get the tooth sorted.

Q. Hi, I’ve had a molar tooth removed recently after it fractured from eating food. I took some photos with my camera to see if it was healing well and i noticed that at the base of the cavity it looked quite dark, almost silvery like my other fillings. Is it normal to be this colour?, could the dentist have just left the lower part of my tooth etc in my jaw? Can i send the photo to get your judgement? Thanks

Q. I need to know of where I can get vampire teeth at?
A. Veneers or lumineers would be the normal way to achieve a semi permanant look but be aware that the human bite does not naturally conform the enlarged teeth and a higher rate of fracture / restoration debond is likely.
Also consider if you want Nosferatu middle fangs or Christopher Lee Style corner fangs
guide price £400-600 per tooth

Q. hi i have some very bad broken off teeth and their decaying. i have had an abcess for three days now but i went to the dr and got penicillin i plan to have the tooth removed in a week or so. but my question is this the pain in my tooth has been pretty bad i started takeing the meds yesterday the penicillin and they gave me hydrocodone 5/500 the pain has eased off but today when i woke up i noticed that a part of chin has a numb sensation about it i can feel when i touch it but it just dont feel right what could be causeing this? its got me really worried thanks.
A.
The cause of your numbness is compression of the nerves in that part of your face due to an abscess on your tooth. Once this swelling has gone your sensations should return to normal. Please try and have your teeth treated. If you are very nervous sedation is a good option to help you cope. We certainly offer this service at Aviva Cosmetic Dentistry

Q. I WAS IN ITALIAN RESTAURANT YESTERDAY AND ONLY TOOK X3 BITES FOOD AND FELT SHARP PAIN DOWN LEFT HAND SIDE OF JAWLINE FROM BOTTOM OF LEFT EAR DOWN TO LEFT HAND SIDE OF LOWER CHIN. I WAS IN AGONY ALL SUN NIGHT AND TOOK X2 LOTS CO-CODAMOL PAINKILLERS WOULD NOT BUDGE PAIN AND TOOK X2 LOT SAME THING THIS MORNING. NOT SEEING DENTIST TILL TOMORROW. CAN YOU PLEASE ADVISE. MY DENTIST ONE OCCASION SAID I MAY GROUND MY TEETH. I HAD BEREAVEMENT OF LATE AND WAS STRESSED AFTER FEW THINGS GOT ON TOP OF ME. WHEN I MOVE MY TEETH UP AND DOWN IT ACHES SO. CAN YOU ADVISE PLEASE. MANY THANKS. PAIN IS UNBEARABLE. I WAS IN TEARS.
A. Your dentist definitely needs to xray the area to determine if there is infection present
If nothing can be found then you can try wearing an Aqualizer www.aqualizer.co.uk to determine if the pain is due to your grinding or have your dentist make a guard to prevent this problem during stressfiul periods

Q. hi there i am 18 in march .i fell off my bike when i was younger and totally shattered all my front teeth.they look terrible.i am increasingly aware of how bad they look.i would love to have full teeth and have them all white.what do you recommend and how much will it cost me.please email me back as soon as possible.i am looking to have the procedure done just after march 2010.
A.
I would suggest that you have a few different consultations with cosmetic dentists and also preview their work to discuss what your desired results are and what would be achievable.
Each individual practice will have different prices for there treatments and also use different laboratory’s so the cost is dependant upon which practice you decide to have your treatment with.
I would highly suggest you shop around to find a dentist you feel confident in achieving your desired aesthetic result.

Q. I had root canal treatment severeal years ago and now the filling has been lost. My dentists told me that I won’t need a filling, but I can feel the tooth if I tap against it!! Is this normal opr should I have no feeling at all? I am a nervous patient and would like some reassuarnce as I don’t really want to start and then have to stop due to the pain,
A. the seal above a root filling is almost as important as the root seal. If you plan to keep the tooth in the longer term, I would want reassurance that the broken filling was still a good seal.

Q. Hi Dr Caplan. I’ve just had my braces put in. Three days after having them put in when my teeth were stull tender, sore and not as stable, I fell and hit one of my front tooth on the ground, which resulted in some bleeding seeping out from that gum line. Now four months after, that tooth now clicks when I push it with my tongue, and feels ‘wobbly’ to a degree. It will become stiff again like before, or will I need a procedure to strengthen its stability? Thanks
A. You may have fractured the root of the tooth and unfortunately it may need to be removed. Please see you dentist for an Xray and vitatlity tests to assess this

Q. have had a permnement 5 teeth 2front eye tooth ,2 sides next to them bridge 12 yrs in..just fell out on it’s own . no hurting, just fell out. same day went to dentist, said it broke off both teeth that held the bridge on..put in plastic barb one side medal barb where front tooth was.been very painful for 2 months under the front tooth only,i have no 5 teeth mind you. just bridge.he said i probably fractured the root. never ever hurt before he really driled out the ,i assume the excess part of the tooth broken off at gum line both doctors are stumped as to why it hurts so bad.. i’ve also had root canal on it , over the yrs.never a problem in 12 yrs, till bridge was reattached..can’t front bite like hamberger bun or soft slices of peaches, without it causeing pain, sometimes very bad through the whole night.been on z-pac 5 days now another z-pac.any idea of what is happening? any answer would be very much appreciated.
A. Sounds like the root has fractured ask for an x-ray the tooth may need removal.

Q. My teeth are generally irregular but I am realistic that this is probably something I have to live with. However, my main concern is a vertical ‘fracture’ on my front tooth. I am very nervous that the tooth will soon break in half but I don’t want to consider crowns as I’ve seen the horrid tell tale sign of the grey as the tooth enters the gum…URGH! Please can you help? ps I’m a scuba diver.
A. It is hard to assess whether this is a true fracture or just superficial without seeing you (for example like the plaster on your walls at home can have ‘crack’ lines but the house is stable)
If it is a crack I would advise it is treated as soon as possible. Crowns now (when treated by a cosmetic dentist and their technician) are metal free so you don’t get the grey margins and are indistinguishable from your natural adjacent teeth

Q. I had a crown fitted 10 yrs ago and a few months ago it began to annoy me as it was catching on my tongue causing minor ulcers .I made an appointment with my dentist and he smoothed my crown off ,since then i have had problems eating when eating cold n hot food .On returning to the dentist he is now saying that I have fractured my crown although I think it was him when he smoothed my crown off . What is my best move now I am on tax credit just now but dont know what to do for the best ? can u give me options of what to do next ? Personally i think he is dodging the issue and trying to palm me off with telling me to apply colgate sensitive paste on tooth every night to calm my pain .can u get a replacement crown on nhs?
A. if the tooth underneath is sound you should be able to get a new crown on the NHS
