I have had many amalgam fillings fitted over many years and some are above twenty years old. Over the last year I have developed a constant metallic taste in my mouth and both my teeth and tongue feel on edge, sometimes even giving a ‘buzz’ like I’ve been chewing aluminium foil. Is this because my fillings need replacing? If so, am I able to instruct my NHS dentist to do this or do I have to rely on his judgement before I can get this work done? Also, am I allowed any say in what they actually use as filling material because after 44 years of swallowing mercury amalgam I fear I am at risk of mercury poisoning. Do I have a choice of any alternative filling material offered on the NHS or am I forced to go private? If the metallic taste is not because of the fillings do you have any idea what could be causing it?

How Much Should a CEREC Cad/Cam Inlay Cost?
Wednesday, September 17th, 2014Dear Dr Hughes, I have just had an estimate for £899.00 to have the old filling removed from a molar and a CEREC CAD/CAM inlay / overlay procedure carried out to the same molar. Does this sound to you to be a fair estimate for this treatment? I have not decided yet whether to go ahead with this procedure. I would very much like to have the procedure done, but it seems quite expensive to me. The filling that is in place, but loose at the moment, is the older mercury amalgam type. Does this make any difference to the cost of this procedure? Many thanks, I hope you can help me come to a decision.

I have a front tooth which already has a filling in it, but I have noticed where the filling is there appears to be a spot of some sort, like a brown stain on the tooth. Why is this? Does the filling have to come out and treated to be refilled. The filling has been in there for a few years but now I am worried that I might lose the tooth or the staining might spread. I would be most grateful for your help. I have no problems with other teeth but I would like to know why this has happened.

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013 Hi, I had problems when I was a kid with the dentist my parents picked and since then I’ve never really had much trust in dentists. I want this to change. Since I’ve had kids my teeth keep getting worse and I don’t know what to do please help. I have just been to a new dentist today as I’d lost a filling at the weekend, when he had a look he wasn’t happy with my teeth at all and said who was you’re last dentist and do you eat a lot of sugar food and drink loads of tea when I told him, he looked at me and didn’t believe me.
I’m a veggie, don’t eat sweets and won’t give them the kids, I only drink water as don’t like tea or coffee since my first child, I don’t smoke or drink.
I’m pregnant at the moment and getting very scared over my teeth as he told me the tooth I need treatment on needs a new filling as it was rotten in places. I don’t want all my teeth to rotten away.
Please help, I don’t know what can I do please.
Is the pain I am having because of a root infection?
Wednesday, October 10th, 2012 A 20 year old filling dropped out of my upper molar. Since being screwed and refilled I have had severe pain on and off most days for a year.My dentist keeps saying it is gum infection but there is no sign of inflammation or rot after all this time and even if I don’t eat on that side,eating can be excruciating for ten minutes and then the pain will completely disappear, and return sometime throughout the day,often without eating or drinking anything.Been using Cortisol soaked brushes mouthwash and toothpaste all this time but my dentist just won’t reason that it could be something else.
Could the screws be touching a nerve maybe? Do I need a root canal? Sometimes the pain goes right up to the base of my eye socket,and I am convinced that gum infection would not feel like this.I never had gum problems before the filling dropped out, and yet I am supposed to believe that I have now from the very first day after the new filling onwards for a year now.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated, I am 62.
