What can a cosmetic dentist do to make my teeth look brighter and my gaps smaller?

Friday, November 4th, 2011
Q.

Hi there, about 8 years ago I was unfortunate enough to be injured by a stranger in an unprovoked attack. My two front teeth were broken, one so far up the nerve was showing. My dentist had to perform root canal and I have porcelain caps on the two front teeth and a white composite on the teeth next to them. I have had many problems since then with these teeth but more recently I had a gum infection above these teeth due to my gums being swollen and not being able to clean into the caps properly. After a course of antibiotics and the hygienest clearing the plaque that had gathered above and inbetween these teeth i have been left with big gaps between my gums and teeth. My dentist said there is nothing they can do and I will have to just live with this. Is this true or can I go to a dentist that specialises in cosmetics and have the four teeth (caps and composites) replaced so they dont look as ‘dirty’ and the gaps arent so big and unsightly. I have really good oral hygiene and have never had any other work needed done to my teeth in my 30 years. A response would be much appreciated as it is really getting me down that my lovely teeth will now be like this forever. Many thanks for any advice you can give me.

What is the best way for me to whiten my smile?

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011
Q.

Hi, I am interested in some information about teeth whitening. I am only 19 years old but my teeth have a slightly discoloured yellow appearance. I have had problems with enamel erosion, mainly on the four teeth in the front of my mouth, I have read enamel eroision can affect the colour of teeth as it wears away the whiter enamel. I also have translucent areas in a few places and a couple of small chips in these areas. One of my front teeth has a small area of composite bonding that replaced a more significant chip. I have made significant changes in my diet and eating habits to stop the erosion becoming worse and my dentist has said that the teeth will be okay as they are, however the appearance bothers me, particuarly the yellow discolouration. Honestly I can not really remember if my teeth used to be any whiter as i assume discoloration is a slow process and i only became aware of it recently, I have also read that some people have naturally more yellow coloured enamel which could be the case for me.
I have done some research on the different methods of tooth whitening and have read about lumineers. These seem good however the price seems to be very high, (only being 19 price obviously is an issue) I assume these can be used to cover the small chips as well as changing the colour of the teeth. I would rather steer clear of conventional veneers as they are more destructive to the tooth and i am still very young. I have also looked at home teeth whitenng kits available from dentists however I have read about possible nasty side-effects including increased risk of cancer…? Also what would the effect be of this on my area of composite bonding, would it lighten aswell? Having a hollywood smile is not important to me, i would really just like my teeth a few shades whiter, and possibly have the couple of chips and translucent areas sorted out, I have become very strict with my self about my teeth and now take very good care of them, however damage has already been done. I would like to have these things sorted out so i can start looking after a nice set of teeth!
Your advice would be very helpful, thank you for your time.

Has dental sealant caused decay and discolouration?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
Q.

I went to my dentist and during my check up he noticed one of my fissures needed sealing as the back molar had fallen out years ago. My dentist asked me if I would like to have another sealant.
I am 27 years old and thought this was a bit weird as the first time I had these put in was when I was 7. So I went ahead and said yes to the fissure sealant as I thought any thing to save the tooth from further decay is worth it.
The next couple of days the plastic sealant feel out and I didnt think any thing of it.
Next couple of weeks went by and I noticed a browner spot at the back of the molar, along with the big one I already see (where the seal was replaced). I researched on the internet about fissures sealants and realised there is an etching involved. Is it possible that my dentist could have caused a cavity in my tooth due to the acid etching? I mean is this possible? As I cant recall seeing this before the sealant was placed?

Please can I have your honest opinion as then I will change my dentist. I am angry that my dentist will cause a filling/cavity due to the etching and now this fissure has fallen out.

Thank you for your time

My damaged two front teeth have been fixed but are discoloured, what can I do?

Monday, April 4th, 2011
Q.

When I was younger I fell of a swing and damaged my 2 front teeth. My right tooth is half real and half fake andis stained along the crack between the real and fake bit. My left tooth died so I had a route canal (i think) and had it covered (my dentist recently said this was a venner?) but my tooth still looks very grey through the venner and my teeth don’t match. I really don’t like my smile anymore and I’m getting married soon. What would you suggest needs to be done and is there anyway it won’t cost tons of money? I feel the dentists should have done a better job when I was younger. Thank you!

Would it be a good idea to get “no-drilling” technique veneers vs regular veneers?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010
Q.
After cancer treatment, I have much gum recession and discoloring of some teeth. I visit my dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups. I need help in deciding what is best for treatment. Since I have such sensitivity, would it be a good idea to get “no-drilling” technique veneers vs regular veneers? Thank you,
