Q. hi i need a lot of dental work. im 21 and terrified. can you be put asleep in your local nhs dentist?
A.
You cannot go under GA in any general dental practice you would need to be referred to the hospital by your general dentist. Some dental practices however so offer sedation.

Q. Hi Justin – Over the last 5 weeks, I have had antibiotics and used mouthwash constantly to clear up an abscess. On Monday after hygenist treatment, my mouth has developed a burning, stabbing sensation in the gums and also nerve pains in the face. Although now on medication for Oral Thrush, the dentist does not think this is the case. Her feeling is either allergic reaction to mouthwash, or Burning Mouth Syndrome. What do you think?
A. Im afraid this isnt my fiesld, and without assessing your mouth i could not advise you on what this may be. I advise you g
et a second opinion with another general dentist.
Kind regards

Q. Dear Dr Justin Glaister! I am writing to you, as my husband is suffering from terrible toothache for the last 2 weeks. He took so many painkillers by now, and still no help. His tooth is aching almost every day, or every second day. We both know, he should go to a dentist urgently, but sadly we can’t afford those high prices. He is on the NHS waiting list, but it is ever so long. Is it true, if he goes to the hospital for emergency treatment, he gets it for free? We come from Hungary, and waiting to go home at the summer, and sort it out there. But this pain is getting unberable for both of us. Is any advise you could give him? Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you.
A. Your husband can go to the emergency dental hospital

A. You need to try to find a dentist NHS or private ASAP perhaps one that offers treatment under intra-venous sedation to help you to relax during treatment. Once this treatment is underway you should start to get your confidence back Best wishes Andrew

Q. Dear DOCTOR I suffer with periodontal disease which is controlled and my teeth are not loose. Recently I have had a sharp pain on chewing under a molar that is crowned. Following an x-ray I have been told that there is chronic infection low down irritating the nerve and that the tooth will have to come out. I am an NHS patient but am prepared to pay privately to have an implant which the NHS dentist would do. I am told there is no rush to decide providing the pain is only occasional . Does this mean it will not make me ill if I take my time . Also what is the success rate for implants on people with gum disease and would the infection need to be treated before commencing or is chronic infection something that does not go away.Thankyou
A. Chronic infection will only go away when the source of the infection is treated. In your case the dentist has diagnosed an extraction.
I would not be able to advise you on an implant prognosis as it depends on bone and gum levels and various other factors. I recommend you have a full assessment with the implantologist of your choice.
Kind regards

Q. Hi, I have been wearing a denture for 30 years, I have 3 front top middle teeth. My denture is a metal plate with 2 wires that wrap around my teeth. I have had 3-4 in total also tried acylic one at one stage of which made me keep heeving, couldn’t take to it at all. My denture now is very lose and irritating my palet and gums I expect and my dentist today suggests I have another acrylic one without wires as he doesn’t recomend the metal ones anymore. He has quoted me £198 (nhs). I was wandering if I would perhaps be able to have a Valplast one with some back teeth on as I haven’t had any back top teeth since I was 19 – 20yrs old. If I could I would rather put the £198 towards this as if I have another acylic one I may not be able to wear it again. I live in Birmingham. could you give me some idea of a price and maybe recomend someone In Birmingham. I am getting married in September this year and would love the confidence to smile. Many thanks.
A.
I do not carrie out dentuures im afriad so could not advise you onthis.
Im afriad i am not aware of any dentists in Birmingham however if you go back onto the cosmetic dentistry guide, im sure you will find someone.

Q. I always feel and do biting my inner cheeks and lips. This habit started for the past one month. The wounds disappears soon and i find my lips and inner cheeks dry. Give me some advice.
A. You need to see your dentist it could be that your wisdom teeth are causing this but there may be another reason. Go and see your dentist and explain this to him / her.

Q. Dear Sir, I’ve been “selected” for a procedure that I am not familiar with and want to find out more information…I have been waiting for approval though a county dental facility to have the rods or implants for witch the denture can be attached to…My oral surgeon called and said that while I wait for the OK for those rods/ implants..He would like to perform something..I am not sure of the exact label for the surgery..it involves Lowering the floor of my mouth..? and building up mandibular area..they want to take a skin graft from my buttocks and use it as a graft for my mouth..They want to do this because my lower jaw was without a denture for 8 years..not that I didn’t have one but got poor dentistry at the time and it did not fit and cut me badly..result..stopped using lower denture to my detriment. Does any of this sound familiar to you..I am 56 years old and in fairly good health in spite of wheel chair status…part of the reason I am in a wheel chair and lost my teeth was because eight years ago I was misdiagnosed as having end stage breast cancer to the bone…I didn’t though but was placed in a Morphine induced comatose state for a year..till they figured out their mistake and withdrew the medications…however I lost most of my teeth..then when I woke up I had to have the rest of them removed…I need some direction here..I am scared to go under anesthesia for 2 hours! In addition I need to know the possible side effects for such a procedure. He said it would be that long…scares me when you consider all of the medical mistakes I have endured in one life time…maybe I am over thinking this..but I need to do research..But don’t no where to turn..he did say this procedure was a common one before implants…what is he talking about..I will have further instruction next week when I go in but want to be educated enough when I go to ask the right questions..Can you please direct me to some educational material..I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time.
A. I am not familiar with this exact procedure but graftings are often done. In my practice we use block grafts for large procedures. Speak to your dentist so they can put you at ease.

Q. hi DR.MOORE, i am applying to dentistry this year, could you please give me some top tips, about doing my best in terms of interviews, personal statement, and etc? thankyou
A. The best thing to have in your CV is probably time visiting dentists to gain experience of working in a dentl practice. The first place to ask is your own dentist to see if they would allow you to sit in for a week or 2 with maybe a letter saying how much you enjoyed it etc… obviously the most important factor will be your grades at the end of the day but it will all help. Good luck Andrew

Q. Good day Sirs, On Wednesday evening I felt a mild toothache. In the morning on the next day my right chick started swelling a bit. I made an appointment to see a dentist on Friday. The doctor treated the tooth canals, said that there’s nothing bad about the tooth, no pus or any purulent substance just a slight inflammation. She left the tooth open and prescribed me to wash it with salt, soda and iodine water thoroughly throughout the day. The next appointment is on Monday. The pain is gone, but the chick is not getting smaller nor swelling any longer. I’m worried that the tooth was left open, could you please tell me if it’s ok? Thanks.
A. I would prefer not to leave teeth on open drainage for more than 24hrs. ( in line with the protocols adopted by the btish & european endondontic societies )

Q. HELLO SIR IM FROM PAKISTAN AND DOING MY fsc i wana apply in BDS but i am very very poor pls advise me that which univeristy is good for me.thanks
A. hi
no matter which option you take in the uk you will find it expensive,
my advice would be to apply to other european union countries where the fees will be cheaper and accomplish a degree there and this will be recognised in the uk.
your other option is to come to the uk with a dental degree from pakistan and then do the conversion exams

Q. Can ceramic crowns be built up? I hope that’s not a dumb question. I suffer from TMJ in the worst way. My dentist put crowns on all my molars to correct my TMJ. Now it’s worse than ever. I think the top crowns are too short. i think he did this to get my bite in line. the pressure on my joint is constant now not to mention everything else. my front teeth are now banging against each other when i talk. i really believe they are too short. I’m in debt because of this dental work. I cant afford to have them taken off and redone. I’m hoping they can just be built up.
A. hello,
it is highly unlikely that ceramic crowns can be built up in the mouth and tolerate the sort of forces generated by the human jaw. you need to discuss these symptoms with your dentist so he can address them or reassure you that they are transient.

Q. Should implants last for life, are they easy to take care of and would all dentists do a good job. I have been given an estimate by a Dr Reza Ardalan, Lodge Causeway, Bristol on what he advises, I am just wondering whether to see anybody else.
A. Implants last a long time and sometimes they do last forever but sooner or later things can fail in the mouth even if looked after properly. There are many things that can be done to increase the longevity of implants. The implant needs to be correctly treatment planned, ie we need to make sure the bone quality and quantity is good enough, implants ideally shouldn’t be placed in people that smoke, are immunocompromised or have gum disease. There needs to be sufficient healing time before the final crown is placed over the top of the implant, the implant shouldn’t be placed in extreme proximity to another root, The final restoration should not interfere with btes and chewing patterns and the implant and crown should be well looked after. Regular check ups and hygiene visits are needed to make sre that implant stays clean. There is a condition called periimplantitis. This means the bones and gum holding the implant in become infected and the implant falls out. This is why so much has to be taken into account before the implant is placed. If you have to have a tooth removed before the implant is placed, this too has to be extracted in a very careful manner to preserve the bone and blood supply in the area.
If you are unsure that your dentist is able to carry out placement you can ask him how many he has done and whether he has any before and after photos. Also ask if he has a knowledge of occlusion. This is the study of the jaw and how the teeth bite together. This is essential for anyone carrying out these types of treatments
I hope this helps
Kind Regards

Q. i have always had a fear of going to the dentist for as long as i can remember, and with this fear and not that good of a childhood, it has taken its toll on my teeth, i am 30 this year, and want to have the smile i have always dreamed of, i think i need to have the remainder of what teeth are left removed and a new set implanting, how much would this roughly cost,
A. I would recommend you saw a sympathetic dentist that is experienced in treating anxious patients, to help you get used to having dental treatment and make you feel at ease during the visits.
The cost of implants can vary from £1800 to £2500 per implant. The cost per implant usually goes down as the number of implants goes up. For example, a case that would require replacing all the upper teeth, would require a minimum of 6 implants (the more the better), this would cost approximately from £10000.00.
