I very ashamed of my teeth what can I do to fix it

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Q. my teeth are in a terrible state after lifetime of other health problems. ive tried my best to look after them but the amount of medication as well as constant vomiting have weakened them. i spent so much time in hospital that the last thing wanted to do when ok was visit dentist. now i really need to get to a dentist and want to but im so ashamed-what can i do?

A. Hi

Please dont be ashamed. We see a variety of problems, more extreme then your case. The most important thing to do is to visit a dentist to have a full mouth examination. This would allow the dentist to outline your options.

I cant have dentures anymore Could you suggest?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Q. please can somebody help me i am 37 years old and had all of my teeth pulled out when i was 18 with 2 wisdom teeth so with not a tooth in my mouth i have worn dentures for nearly 20 years and as im sure you know what im just about to say i wont be able to have any more dentures due to no bone and gum left im getting quite distressed about this as the plates do not fit in my mouth now and the teeth on the plate have grinded so i cant eat or chew my face feels is collapsing.would i not be able to have this done on the nhs.can there be a positive outcome

A. Hi, many thanks for your email. the first thing that should be ascertained is how much bone you have generally i have found in my experiance that once a CT scan of the jaw bones is done, there is usally more bone in the jaws than you think. The next step once the true answer is known about how much bone you have is deciding on the the way the teeth are to be restored. th reason for the CT scan would be to see if you are a candidate for dental implants.

Preferribly four implant in each jaw would give you fixed teeth which would not require removing, the cost of which would be approx £12,000 per jaw.

Two implants per jaw fixed to a denture would be removable but when in very secure. the cost per jaw would be £5000

The alternative would be dentures which is what you already have, but with a better fitting surface and new teeth, these are not ideal, but cost wise may range from £1000 – £4000

There are many practices that offer interest free credit to help finance the treatment. hope this is helpful.

Should I return to same dentist or consult another dentist?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. Hello Dr Moore Last Friday i when to see my dentist for what thought was the last appointment as in this appt the crown was to be fitted. The dentist found the crown was too long from was requested and spoke to the tech. who re-aasured that he had made as per instruction. Then the dentist thought the teeth had moved but i had temp.crown and i am healthy non-osteoporotic patient.then the crown was fitted with additional filler and now my teeth are not alignment and the inplant grinds with lower jaw teeth.i phoned the dentist who suggested i visit her again but i an very uncomfortable about going back as i have lost all confidence her abilities as she may do more damage and i need to resolve the poor fitting crown.Ihave had an inplant previously from another dentist with no such complications. Please could you advise me on what action should takeie should i return even though i feel she may do more harm and should i see another dentist?i look forward to your advice

A. Go back as she is the best person to sort this problem out another dentist may not understand the situation you can always change when the problem is sorted out

My canine may fall is there any way I can put temp tooth there?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. i am 19 both of my canines are impacted, now the canine on my left is lose and will likely fall out in the next month or so, once it falls out how long do you think it will take to grow back this is so embarrassing for me i am pregnant as well and i am going to feel so ugly!! and also once it falls out it there any way i can put a temp. tooth there?

A. hi many thanks for your email, i no this is not good news but once the baby tooth does fall out it is not automatic that the impacted canine will come out, very possibly it is more likely that the canine will not come out. my advice will be to see your dentist and discuss your options before you lose the tooth.

Can I hv crowns replaced instead of dentures Plz advice

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Q. I have had a severe fear of the dentist after having a terrible experience around 10 years ago. Unfortunately in this time my teeth have gotten in to very bad condition, which I am really embarrassed about. After my front crown got caught at a dancing competition and broke, I decided I needed to take action and so I visited the local dentist. He devised a plan for me and I am currently on the waiting list to have the necessary teeth removed at the hospital and then all the fillings and treatment I need completing. I was however horrified with his advice to have my two front crowns replaced with dentures. I am 25 years old and devastated with this suggestion! There are crowns on my two front teeth at the moment(granted one is cracked) and I am in no pain. If I pay privately can I choose to have the crowns replaced? I understand that ultimately the dentists advice may be correct, however, I at least want to try! I would really appreciate your help, as I am so upset! Thank you in advance!

A. Thanks for your e-mail, I am sorry to hear that you have had bad dental experiences in the past. I feel that for your own peace of mind, you need to attend a General Dental Practice to gain a second opinion with regards to the feasability of saving your tooth. The amount of healthy tooth tissue which remains will determine whether or not the crown can be replaced, and without a consultation I would be unable to give a definite answer. It may be that there is not enough tooth tissue left, and that is why your current dentist is advising you to have the extraction. However I feel that if you do not gain an independent second opinion, you will always wonder. There are private practices which you can attend who will offer a free consultation with no obligation to have traetment. If you require any further advise, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kindest Regards

Can I stop wearing retainers?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Q. Hi, i wore braces for 1 and half years, but my teeth still doesnt look that good. my dentist told me that i have to wear retainerd all the time when i go bed. Just wanted to know whether if there is any chance of me stop wearing the retainers anymore? or What can i do to not to wear them anymore?

A. If they don’t look right you might need to have more active treatment before the retention, you could even try a bonded retainer as it works better if you don’t want to keep wearing a removable one.
