Q. I live in the United States. I want to change dentists, after having a temporary crown affixed to my front tooth, and the one beside it. The dentist did several x-rays, filed both teeth down, casted a mold, and affixed a temporary to both teeth. Assuming the permanent set of teeth has NOT been ordered, and will NOT be by this dentist, 1) what is the general cost for this TEMPORARY crown placed over BOTH teeth (the temporary crown is in one unit, but placed over both, filed teeth)? Please do not include the costs involved with the permanent two crowns, and the final fitting of those two, regular plastic-type crowns. However, I do want the mold already casted. 2) Can you also tell me if it is possible to take this mold with me to the new dentist? If not, 3) why and, 4) how much does the mold itself cost? [That’s a total of three (3), possibly four (4) questions – hope that’s ok. I have numbered each question, for ease of reading.]

Q. Hi, A few days ago while I was eating I suddenly bit down on a piece of bone with my front teeth. Since then the left front tooth has become extremely sensitive. I think it is cracked but not exactly sure as I can’t see any crack but can feel a slight uneveness at the tip. It is so painful that I find it difficult talking as the cold air makes it hurt. Any ideas as to how to stop this? Please help!
A. Thanks for your question, I would recommend that you attend your dental practice at your earliset convenience, so that they can assess the damage to the tooth. If it is just sensitivity, using toothpaste specifically designed for sensitivity can help.

Q. Hi.My son is 10 and his top canines are just erupting.One is out and seems to be high on his gum but not impeded in any way.Is this normal and is it likely to move down to join adjacent teeth?I have just been to dentist but she is off sick and my next appt is not till January.Please advise for the meantime.Thank you.
A. It is normal for the canines to do this, my son looks the same! Wait for another 2 years or so and see how they develope as the teeth erupt and the child grows.

Q. I’ve just had a filling – there was decay under an existing filling (spotted via X-Ray) and some of the original filling had to be removed to remove the decay underneath and then place new filling on top. It has been 18 hours since the filling and I am still very sore. Is this normal? It’s 4am in the morning and I cannot sleep because of the pain/soreness. I could not brush over the recently filled area before going to bed either as it felt very sore/sensitive. I have had fillings before and cannot remember the pain post-filling lasting this long. Thank you
A. Thanks for your questions, I am sorry to hear that you are suffering. I would advise that you return to your dentist at your earliest convenience to have the filling checked, as it is keeping you awake. It is possible that the filling may just need some slight adjustments, but I would encourage you to have it checked.

Hello, I have a front tooth that is rotting, it has turned black and does not look nice, I know I need the dentist but I have not had any good experiences with the dentist hence why I’ve put it off for so long, I know I have to go sooner rather than later but I’m worried about what they will do with the tooth in question, will they take it out or can they repair it?

You need the check up before you can get down to details. The good thing is that you dont have to have anything done at the first visit , just decide on some likely options.

Q. At the age of 15 I had four teeth removed and was given a temporary brace to move my teeth, then a fixed brace on my lower teeth for 9 months and one on my top teeth for only 2 months. My teeth were never completely straight at the time I had the brace removed and I stated my worries to the orthodontist. He ignored my request to keep the braces on longer. When removing the braces he cut my gums severely and did not polish them afterwards. I was given a retainer to wear and was never invited to a check up. I have expressed my concerns to my NHS dentist as I have marks on my teeth from the braces and my top teeth sit slightly behind my two front teeth. I am 18 now and a student I would really like the perfect smile I thought I was getting. Is there any way I can be referred to get the treatment I should have got at the younger age? Q. My top four front teeth have been on a denture for over 20 years. During that time my gums have receded quite a lot. Both teeth on either side of the four now look silly as the teeth themselves look very long as the gums have receded so much. I have quite a wide smile/laugh but over the years I have tried to limit this as I am very aware of how noticeable the ‘long’ teeth are. Have you any ideas??

Q. Are there any risks in getting wisdow teeth pulled from only one side of the mouth? Like loss of equalibrium or anything ? And would deep rooted nerves in wisdom teeth cause tinnitus ?
A. You need to ask the dentist doing the surgery as there a a number of common risks and some uncommon ones. ther are some evidence based guidlines from NICE ( Nat institute of clinical excellence) on when its a good idea and when its not.

Q. I have a temporary on a tooth. It has been in for about 2 weeks. Just recently my gum in front of the temporary is really hurting and is bothering me above the tooth and in between the tooth. What should I do? I have flossed and no food is coming out? Could it be that I have cut the gum with my floss?

Q. I have just had my front four crowns replaced with all porcelain crowns as I wanted the most natural looking replacements for my old crowns. My front left tooth was root filled some years back and has become very dark, the problem is that the darkness is now showing through my crown, it looks as though it is a shadow or stain, I opted for the all porcelain in good faith, now I realise that the metal crown covered with porcelain would not have allowed the darkness of the old tooth to show through. This wasn’t mentioned as a possibility when I had my consultation and I am now wondering if there is anything my dentist can do to rectify the problem, I just feel as though I have replaced one worry about the appearance of my teeth with another!! I also feel that if I had known this was going to happen then i would have opted for the porcelain over metal crown. What should I do? the crowns were permanently fitted this morning and the dark shadow is really noticeable!
A. Thanks for your questions, firstly I would suggest that you go back to your dentist to discuss your concerns with them. If, as you say, the dentist did not discuss the possibility of an all porcelain crown not covering the discolouration caused by your root filled tooth, the dentist may be willing to discuss improving the results, may be even replacing the crown to acheive the aesthetically pleasing result you were expecting. Q. my six front teeth are starting to rotten with yellow hole forming and turning gray. the front one has a hole going up to my gums that is gray as well. so i was wondering if there is anything i can do to prevent more decaying of my teeth?
A. Firstly you should get these teeth filled and then cut out sugary foods and drinks from your diet. The use of a flouride tooth paste will also help when brushing 2-3 times a day.
