Q. hi am 23 year old female, i have type 1 diabetes. i have recently noticed that i am getting a small gap in between my front two teeth, its only small but i am really self conscious am find myself looking at the mirror every hour or so. what would you recommend. thank you
A. it is common for diabetic patients to be unable to fight infection once they get it as well as a completely healthy individual.this is why there is usually a higher occurrance of gum disease . it is possible this applies to your case as a minor gum inflammation.
i would advise a good clean by a hygienist and allowing time for the gum to heal as it may only be a minor fluctuation in the tissue

Q. Hi Dr Moore Im 23 and am extremely embarrased at the state of my teeth. Toward the back I have lost two on the upper jaw, and have lost part of three teeth on the bottom jaw – presumably from caries. There are also small holes in two of my front teeth near the gumline I feel very nervous at the propect of going to see the dentist because I have neglected my oral healthcare, although I do brush regularly now – I was never really promted to during my childhood. I dont where possible want to have any, or many teeth extracted as I dont discuss my oral health with my partner – again, too embarrased as her teeth are great – she is registered with an NHS dentist wheras I am not and have been reluctant to do so because i feel the way i do. What other options are there to retain as many of my current teeth? i understand without an examination its difficult to say, but from a worst case scenario.. I especially do not want to have to wear dentures, so other options would be essential for this. I have done a bit of research into some of the options, but I thought i would pluck up the courage and speak to someone about it. Many thanks,
A. The first step is to find a dentist who comes recommended perhaps your partners dentist would be a good start. If the teeth are in a very bad state of repair you may need to consider removing teeth and replacing them with fixed bridges or dental implants. Your dentist should be able to advise you on this, if not then maybe ask for a referral to a dentsit with implant experience.

Q. Hello, I have just been to my dentist as I was experiencing pain in my lower back teeth. I had an x-ray done and was told that my lower back teeth were fine but that I have alot of decay in my top canine tooth and that it will need fixing immediatly. She then poked and blew air into it asking me if it hurt which it didn’t and then said I would need the tooth sorting but said that it would be extremley difficult. I asked if she meant if I was going to lose the tooth or need a root canal and she said no nothing like that, she would just need to do a normal type filling but just that it was going to be very difficult. I am now scared and don’t understand. Please could you explain this to me a little more? What happens during a filling of you canine tooth and why would it be so difficult? Please please help!!!
A. I am not sure what your dentist meant either – you need to go back to her and ask her specifically what she means

Q. Hi There, I had braces when I was a young teenager to close the gap between my two front teeth and get rid of my overbite. The gap has gone but my overbite came back (due to not wearing my retainer when I was younger). I would now like to get this corrected, but don’t particularly want to get one of the regular train track braces, and cannot afford to pay thousands of pounds for the other treatments. Are there any alternatives?
A. The coices you have are moe convential metal braces or clear braces such as invisalign. As as adult the cost of this treatment will be in the region of £3K to £4K.

Q. Afew years ago i filed down my four front teeth and my four bottom teeth as i thoght it would make them look straighter, my top four front teeth were very long and overlaped wich they still do but only just. They now feel uncomfortable and my jaw aches on ocassions, i havent been to the dentist in afew years now and im worried about telling them what i did, but id love to get them fixed in some way to make them look and feel better, would veneers or crowns be a good option for this or something else that you could advice me on, also how much would veneers cost and would i need to have them on the 8 that i filed, any advice would be great look forward to hearing from you.
A. Hello It sounds like veneers might be your best option. At my clinic in Essex we charge from £500 per veneer, the number required depends on the problem with the teeth and the result you would like to acheive. regards Andrew

Q. Hi I am 59 years of age, and have had protruding front teeth since the age of nine. I have always been afraid of dentists due to a very bad experience at the age of 4 years. My question is am I too old to have them straightened and can anything be done, should the above be correct? I have been tormented by my peers both in my adult and child hood. Although I have coped with the teasing since I was a child, with the knowledge that it is thier problem, it has always left me feeling insecure. I would dearly love to have them straightened if possible for myself. I await in anticipation for your answer. Yours sincerely.
A. Dear. Adult orthodontics is a standard procedure nowerdays. A number of options are open to you form fixed brace work to clear brace options all depending on your particular problems.

Q. hello, im nearly 28 and i remember visiting the dentist when i was very young, ive never been since. my teeth are seriously deformed, next to my front two teeth, on either side are large teeth that have grown outwards, i cant smile and its becoming a serious issue. im so depressed and need help. im scared to see a dentist out of sheer embaresment. Im also on income support. what can i do? will i ever be able to smile again. i totaly need new teeth. its wrecking my life. please help thank you
A. Its very difficult to pluck up the courage to see someone but i’m sure it will be worth it. You will qualify for free dental treatment if you can find an NHS dentsit who will take you on. Alternatively you may need to pay separatley for any cosmetic treatment you may require.

Q. hi i am beyond exasperated with my teeth now. i have a HUGE fear of the dentist. i recently had two teeth taken out after many a muddle up and going to about 6 different dentist, been referred for sedation etc and it was just awful. i am not getting pain in my other teeth and i just cannot handle it anymore. i will be willing to get money from somewhere but i am wondering IF its possible to have ALL of my teeth removed and dentures put in?i could NOT bare veneers or implants – that is simply out the question. i just want all my teeth out and dentures. i am 23, i know it’s young but honestly, i am at the end of my tether now. please could you give me any info this — if its even possible, what would happen, the cost etc. thank you so much.
A. I am sorry to hear of your predicament and I am glad you are not in pain at the moment. I am unable to give you advice regarding your problems due to the serious nature of having all of your remaining teeth removed.

Q. Hi there i have a tooth that is half missing! my dentist wants to do an extraction on it but i keep putting it off, it has started to hurt abit now! but if i go let my dentist extract the remaining tooth will there be any problems duing the extraction? where the tooth has brocken the gum has gone over the the broken part so i think that she is gonna have problems getting it i am more frieghtend of the dentist cutting my gum open! im am terified of going to the dentist ever since a dentist i used to go to messed up one of my teeth.
A.
It sounds as though you do need your tooth removed- please discuss your anxiety with your dentist as the problem of removing the tooth will only increase the more the decay is allowed to grow

Q. hello, back in october last year i had 8 teeth removed,2 months later i had a dental absess that ingulfed my face. i had to have surgery and more teeth removed as they plugged the absess. in that time i had the inside of my mouth cut open in 2 places with a scalpul and an epidural needle plunged into my face. as a result of this i have had a nervous breakdown and think about my mouth 24 hours a day. i have only 7 teeth on the top set left, 2 have extreme long tooth and 2 are crowns, the bottom i have 9 teeth all my fronts mainly and one side which i use to eat. they need a very deep clean.now since all this has happened i have tried to go to the dentist but i have huge panick attacks and vomit my nerves are shot, i even tried to go via sedation but even the though of needles etc coming near me sends me into tears and i cant breath. as i cant seem to deal with this would i be able to have my teeth taken out under general at the hospital, and if so how would i go about doing this. would be grateful for any advice.
A. You need to try and get your dentist to refer you to hospital where they should be able to manage your extreme dental and needle phobia

Q. I have a few rotten teeth that need removing as very painfull i also have poor oral health due to a massive fear of dentists i have even thought about being knocked out having them all taken out then false teeth so i dont keep having all this pain and worry however this cost is not an option for me. I would really like some help to get my oral health back and teeth sorted and say goodbye to the pain last night i only had 2 hours sleep due to the pain. The other problem i have is i am ellergic to the injections and the last time i had a tooth removed it was at birmingham dental hospital under sedation this put with my very bad fear of dentists is why my oral health is so bad and i am ashamed of it to be honest but worried about doing anything about it. I have also had a very unsympathetic dentist years ago which made me worse and not had a dentist since. Please can you give me some advice and point me in the direction of help as i worried in pain and anxious. regards
A.
It is not clear how you found your experience at BDH, Contact them direct as you will already have a hospital number and be in their “system”. They are caring and are the lowest cost or free if you are on a budget.
to help overall you might try hypnotherapy to work on your anxiety before going for an appointment. There are quite a few registered therapists in the area.

Q. I have very weak teeth that crumble very easily – as a result I have lost many teeth and have some fillings. I would be very interested in having vaneers fited on all remaining teeth but also have a dentist phobia. Is it possible to have the teeth prepared and the vaneers fitted when under sedation?!?
A. It sounds as though you will need to have crowns for your teeth as they protect the remaining toooth structure from further damage. Many practices offer sedation. this can be in the form of:
ORAL sedation- tablet form that eases your nerves before your dental appointment.
IV sedation- intra-venously administered into your system. This is a good option for very nervous patients. You will be awake and responsive, yet really realxed and not really bothered by the dental treatmnet. You may also experience amnesia afterwards- so that you appointment may not even be remembered!
Please be aware that you will need to be escorted home from the practice. Please discuss this with your local provider of this facility to see if you are a suitable candidtae. Certain medical conditions may prevet you from being able to have this treatment.
It is very important that you feel comfortable with the dentist and the dental practice that you will be receiving your treatment. good luck.

Q. hi and a few years ago i use to smoke alot i started at the age of 14 ive been scared of the dentist now i want to sort my teeth out im 21 years old and im scared to show my self as i dont like my smile, my teeth need straightening but i dunno how to go arround it ive tryed brushing my teeth for 5 months now and my gums still bleed, i have a broken tooth aswell and allways getting things stuck in it, i am signing on and i cant afford anything to get me teeth done i dont know what the nhs has to offer please help i am willing to do anything to me teeth to make them better again
A. If you are nervous ask friends for recommendations for local dentists. Also try your local PCT / NHS direct for a details of NHS Dental practices with a “sedation contract” Once you have been assessed you will know what work needs doing and then try options ( such as tablet sedation, IV sedation, “normal” treatment with added TLC etc etc)
