Will my gums get back to normal after taking the brace off?

Monday, August 24th, 2009
Q. Hi, Im 14 and have braces. Im very worried about the size of my gums. I have had my braces for a year and 8 months. My teeth are fine but I have very bulbus gums. They are progressing under my wire and are puffy. But they are normal colored. My orthodontists have told me to to brush in circles against the gums (from the top and bottom) and up into them. In the past I have been able to make them go down a little bit, but then they end up flaring up again. I have been trying again recently and Im not having any luck this time. Im worried this is permanent. Im also worried I’ll have to have surgery on my gums, which I dont want. Will my gums go down when my braces come off or not? Thanks

A. They will but it sounds like you need to see a hygienist and clean your teeth better

What are possible treatments for grinding teeth problem?

Monday, August 24th, 2009
Q. Hi I grind my teeth (bottom row) at night and my dentist has told me the only treatment is dentures or teeth implants can you please let me know if there is any other treatment such as crowns or veneers. I am an extremely nervous patient. I thank you in advance for your help.

A. If the supporting structures to your teeth have been severely damaged ( predominately the bone) then implants or dentures may be necessary.  If you have worn teeth only crowns may be an option.  Please contact my pratice if you wish for a second opinion and possibly treatment. I have treatment many wear cases with great success

Ive a small grey are at the top of my teeth is it early signs of gum disease?

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009
Q. I have a small grey area at the top of my front tooth and along four of my bottom front teeth. I know I need to get to the dentist, but at this time I do not have insurance and I need every dime I make. Can you tell me if this sounds like early gum disease? What are some things I can do at home to stop it from getting worse…until I can get to the dentist?? Thanks so much.

A. Keep it as clean as possible but you really need it checked out as soon as possible.

Ive a rotten smell coming from my dental bridge how do i fix it?

Thursday, July 30th, 2009
Q. Why do i have a rotten smell coming from my dental bridge and how do i disfuss it until i can make it to my dentist. People seems to cover there face when i talk and the whole room stinks when i open my mouth ..Please help me i am in desperate need also my bridge is loose on one side not the other..Have u ever heard of that..

A. There could be some decay under the bridge you could also be getting food and plaque trapped between your teeth which is causeing the smell. You need to see your dentist and dental hygienist so you can keep your teeth cleaner.

My hygienist put a drill to my dental bridge and now my tooth had rotten how can i fix it?

Thursday, July 9th, 2009
Q. During a dental check up I was asked if I wanted a scale and polish. I said yes to this during which the hygienist got the drill out and started on the bottom teeth(previously this had been done by hand) she then went to an area where I had a fixed dental bridge and put the drill to it. It scared me a little and I put my hand up to stop. When I was with a previous dentist he said he would leave that are whilst cleaning but always said that I was to keep it clean. I have actually had the dental bridge now for about 30 years. During my latest check up the current dentist said there was a hole around the dental bridge area and said i had a rotten tooth fixed to the dental bridge. I am not sure about this, I have no pain and wonder if the hole he talked about was caused by the hygienist using the drill in a delicate area- should she have done this? Thanks

A.

The hygienist will have used an ultrasonic cleaner rather than a “drill”.  This used correctly will clean away tarter and plaque leaving clean teeth.  The likely hood is that the hole is due to decay and the hygienist has removed tarter covering over the decay.  None the less please voice your concerns with your dentist

My teeth are in a real mess regardless of good dental hygine will i need to have dentures

Thursday, May 21st, 2009
Q. I am only 33 yrs old and my teeth are in a real mess. Im ashamed when i go to the dentist. Regardless of good dental hygine over the years my filings fall out about a year after they have been done. I grind my teeth in my sleep which doesnt help. Will i need to have dentures

A. It would be best to avoid extractions if at all possible perhaps crowns might work better than fillings especially if you grind your teeth.

I was wondering if one or two cigarettes would pose much of a risk to the 6 month braces treatment

Friday, April 3rd, 2009
Q. Hi, I have just had “6 month” braces fixed. I’ve heard it’s not a good idea to smoke during orthodontic treatment as it could slow the straightening process, and also increases the risk of cancer due to restricting the blood flow in the mouth. I am not a heavy smoker and was wondering whether one or two cigarettes a day would not pose too much of a risk? Is smoking a definite no no?

A. Smoking regardless of whether you are wearing a brace carries a risk of cancer. With regard to your oral health smokers have a higher risk of gum disease and if you have any surgical procedure the healing process could also be effected because of restricted blood supply.

Smoking is not good for your general or oral health.

Kind regards

My teeths are with dark yellow sports on them

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q. My teeth’s are with dark yellow sports and it is difficult to clean them?

A. You need to go to a dentist and have your teeth assessed sometimes professional cleaning can help.  If not tooth whitening may help but if really depends on the type of discolouration you have.

I have bone loss of an 80 year old and i’m 46. What is the best treatment for me for teeth that are coming loose?

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
Q. I have bone loss of an 80 year old and i’m 46. On my back teeth the lower part of the teeth below the gum line is now visible. Apparently, I only have 40% bone holding my teeth. What is the best treatment for me for teeth that are coming loose? Thanks.

A. Hi You’ll need long term treatment with a gum specialist and hygienist, involving cleaning of the rots of the teeth. It may also be possible to use bone rebuilding techniques once the initial treatment has stabilised the condition

Small gap and gums receding

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
Q. I believe I have gum disease starting in my front bottom teeth 2 have developed a small gap and the gums are receeding. How can I prevent this from spreading. How can I get my gums healthy again. I have good dental hygene but have smoked for a long time. I am stopping smoking. Please help. Thankyou for your time

A. The first thing you should do is stop smoking and visit your dentist. He should refer you to his Hygienist, or for more serious problems to a Periodontist (Gum expert). they will clean teeth thoroughly and give you advaice on the long term care of the teeth and gums

I only have 10 permanent teeth The rest are baby teeth

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
Q. Hello, I only have 10 permanent teeth. The top front 6 and the front bottom 4. The rest are baby teeth… I have no wisdom teeth, one 12-year molar just commimg in & im 25 years old.. I simply have no permanent teeth under the baby teeth… My dentist is amazed of the condition of my baby teeth.. but I dont want dentures at 30. What do you suggest to keep my baby teeth from rotting??… will they rot??? When I was a teenager they put this nailpolish-like stuff on…but it came off quickly..and reminded me of having popcorn in my teeth. Are veneers a good idea? Thanks

A. Hi  The baby teeth will stay in place if the permanent teeth are not underneath. I would recommend regular visits with your dentist, excellent oral hygiene and flouride toothpaste and mouthwash to strengthen the enamel. If they eventually become loose you could consider implants to replace the teeth instead of dentures.

regards

Andrew

gums are getting inflamed

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q. I had 6 cerinate veneers put on my upper teeth 2 years ago. They were fine for the first year but since then my gums have started to pull away from my teeth. I don’t have gum disease and they don’t bleed but I have started to get noticable gaps in my front teeth which are ruining the look of my veneers. My dentist used a special tool to ensure that there were no rough edges around my veneers earlier this year but I’m afraid that most of the damage has already been done and I can only assume this recession is a result of a reaction to the bonding material or something. What can I do to ensure that my gums do not recede any further? I also have some staining along the edges of my veneers (a horrible yellow colour) I am seeing my dentist next month, will he be able to get rid of this staining and is there anything I can do at home to reduce it? Is it possible to have veneers removed and not replace them and still look respectable? My dentist only made the surface of my teeth very slightly rough before placing the veneers. Would my gum line look odd? If I decide to have my veneers replaced (I don’t really want to have to do this for financial reasons plus I have only had them two years and I had hoped they would last longer) how much would it cost at your practice? and how difficult will it be to remove the old ones? Please reply I really need advice. Thank you.

A. I can not really give you complete advice without seeing and assessing you.  It sounds like the gums are getting inflammed regular trips to the hygienist may reduce this.  Your dentist may be able to clean the margins to improve it. If the veneers are leaking this could also be causing the problems.

apparently i have gum disease and the hygienist may be able to help

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q. Im 44 and ive never had a confident smile…my top teeth are overcrowded and i have fangs….i went to a private dentist last week and he said i needed to see the hygienist a few times and then see what my options are….apparently i have gum disease and the hygienist may be able to help…my teeth feel strong but the xrays dont lie and i may not be suitable for braces….are there any other options available to me if im not allowed braces…many thanks

A.

I would need to see you at the practice to help. Because there are choices but the degree of crowding and gum problems needs to be accurately assessed.

I have broken teeth swollen gums and very bad breath

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Q. Hi Don’t know if you can help me but I literally am at my very last resort I am 27 and since having a really bad experience as a child my teeth are ok to look at but I have broken teeth my gums are bright red and all lumpy, if I tilt my head down I can see down my gums. I have terrible BAD BREATH which has caused me a lot of personal problems my partner and father of my daughter has left, I stopped going out with friends I have completely shut myself off from everyone I cant speak to customers face to face at work due to the smell I am becoming very lonely and stuck. I honestly and genuinely have bad thoughts of not living I cant see a way out I have been my dentist it took me all my time getting there as I am so scared. I am desperate for some one to help me as my 6 year old daughter dosent like to give me a kiss which breaks my heart I am single but wont meet anyone with a mouth like this. My family make nasty comments about my breath and teeth. Even standing in sopping lines and someone talks to me I have to pretend I haven’t heard them and I am very friendly and feel awful for doing this. I am so worried about this as I can not afford dental plans although I work I am also a single parent I just cant do it and I don’t know what to do I am so scared at the fact I think of worse things to solve this problem can someone help me please. Many Thanks

A. Hi , listen sometimes things are not as bad as they seem, firstly it sounds as if because you have neglected your gums, you have lots of plaque and calculus fermenting around the gums causing the bad smell, the gum condition and hence the bad breathe can be dealt with very easily by seeing a hygienist on maybe a few occasions and improve your oral hygiene rountine at home, the cost of this treatment dependant on where you go should be no more than a couple of hundred pounds.

as for the rest of the teeth, once the bad breath and gums are sorted out a good dentist will advise you of the options available to improve your teeth and with relevent budgets. there is also interest free credit so if you do have a monthly budget in mind lets say £100 then the dentist may be able to work to your monthly budget. if you email back with where you live i would be if i can happy to recommend a local dentist for you.

My wisdom teeth are gradually coming out causing bleeding and pain

Saturday, March 28th, 2009
Q. My wisdom teeth are gradually coming out on the top of my mouth. However I had pains initially. But they havent bothered me at all until yesterday. I get slight pain and when i brush my teeth, i bleed alot. Does this mean i will need to get them extracted?

A. You do not have to get them taken out some people have their wisdom teeth all their lives and have no problems.  Try to keep them as clean as possible if they continue to ache then see your dentist.

i have suffered from periodontal gum disease I am dreading further teeth loss

Saturday, March 28th, 2009
Q. I have suffered from periodontal gum disease for a few years. I am an otherwise reasonably healthy ex-smoker aged 51yrs. I have now lost approx. 6 teeth (upper only) and have recently needed to start wearing a partial denture. I find this very upsetting and dread further teeth loss. What would you recommend (for someone who has very limited funds)I do?

A. Get your teeth well cleaned by hygeinist or dentist, repeat the cleanings until you periodontal diasease has stabilised.
spend plenty of time refining your cleaning tecnique, it is the best and cheapest way to manage the problem and prevent further loss.
most of the alternatives to dentures may involve costs, so plan now and decide if you need to save towards your ideal result.

Anxious about my bottom teeth thinning

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q. Hi sir, I am 27 and I feel very anxious about my bottom two teeth thinning. I often feel a strange sensation (not pain but sort of sore) with these teeth..and feel like I need to chew something. As I child I never drank much milk but I have now started to drink at least 2 small glasses everyday and sometimes take vitamin D and calcium supplements. Is there anything more I can do to protect my teeth? I am still young and want my teeth to last me a life time. Please advice. Much appreciated, Has

A. I would recommend a high flouride tooth paste such as Duraphat and regular visits with your dentist and Hygienist to maintain your oral health
