Q. Hi, I’m 28 years old and i have always had bad teeth and oral hygiene in general. The last time i visited a dentist was around 14 years ago. The teeth that didn’t have to be extracted had fillings so my mouth was already in quite a mess. Now it has got to the stage where at least 50% of my teeth have completly rotted away right down to the gum line and below. All i see now when i open my mouth is big black holes in my gums. The remaining teeth, mostly being the front visable ones have very bad cavities and are discusting to look at. Having done research online i am absolutly petrified of related health issues caused by bad oral hygeine. I’m so depressed right now i just dont know what to do, I have no friends, people think i am ignorent because i never smile and dont like to look at people when they speak to me incase they look at my teeth. I am jobless at the moment, i wanna go back to work but too worried about what the interviewer will think when he see’s my teeth. I really want friends and to socialise but im just so embarassed to go anywhere or speak to anyone. I currently recieve social security benefits so spending thousands of pounds to fix my teeth is not an option for me. I just don’t know what to do or where to turn, i just want to be able to smile and laugh without looking at the floor or putting my hand over my mouth. I have a partner of 8 years who keeps telling me to sort it but she just dosn’t understand why i carn’t face going to see a dentist. I carn’t even smile in front of my 3 children because im so scared of them seeing my bad teeth and asking questions about them, even my own kids think im ignorent and misrable. Lastly i am now limited by what i can eat, i find it almost impossible to chew so i can only eat soft foods. I’m quite sure i’m way past the help of a regular dentist because i don’t believe any of my teeth can be saved and its actually my gums that look pretty messed up now. Please help me turn my life around and smile again. Your help and advice is very much appreciated.
A. Hi, thanks for your questions. Firstly I would like to start by assuring you, that there are ways to improve your situation and get you smiling again. As you are not currently working, and are on benefits you will probably be exempt from charges at your local NHS dental practice. In order to register with your local NHS practice, I would encourage you to view the NHS choices website www.nhs.uk , on the left hand side you will see a section entitled ‘Find and choose services’ by inputting your postcode, this should give you a list of your local NHS dental practices. If you are struggling to find an NHS practice who are taking on new patients, you should contact your local PCT (Primary Care Trust) or NHS direct on 08 45 46 47 and ask if there is a waiting list for your area which you can join. I know that this first step of getting an appointment must be daunting for you, but it could signal the start of a whole new and happier stage in your life. I am sure that your partner and your children will support you when they realise how much it pains you and that you are trying to change things. I wish you the best of luck, and encourage you to contact me again if you require any further assistance.
Kind Regards

Q. How do you protect your teeth if you have had the front teeth bonded? And what type of toothpaste should you use to keep your teeth from staining?
A. One way to protect your teeth would be to wear a night guard to protect them during your sleep. Simple toothpasts form your local chemist/supermarket will do a good job to keep your teeth clean – you may want ot visit your hygienist as well!

Q. Hi, I was wondering if there is anything that can be done to make your teeth healthier if they are not as healthy as they should be? I know the normal flossing, brushing, healthy eating and mouthwash but can i be doing anything more? I am terrified of dentists and have recently been for a checkup after about 10 years of not going. My teeth are not too bad, i have been told but i have a wisdom tooth that needs to come out( which has just broken on me). I have also had a filling fall out a few years ago but due to my fear did not get it sorted out but now the dentist says that the gum has grown up though the whole. My dentist says that it has to be removed but when i went for the xrays the dentist at the hospital said that i could have a rootcanal instead which would save the tooth. Apart from the gum thing the tooth is healthy and the roots and centre of the tooth are absolutely fine. How will a root canal help the gum issue? Thank you for taking the time to reply.
A. The best thing you can do for your teeth is to brush and floss twice a day and see a dentist and hygienist every 6 months.
Kind regards

Q. Hello! So here’s the deal: I am getting my braces off in about 2years,and I already have stains. I need to get them off like pronto before my mom notices. And I don’t have time to go see a specialist without her knowing. And I only have like $30. What should I use to get rid of them?
A. The staining needs to be professionally cleaned by seeing a dental hygienist.

Q. am only 17 and i hate my teeth i have a gum diease and the front 2 bottom teeth are fake. i really want something done i want to knoe what the best option for me is please help.
A.
You gum disease can be treatment easily by booking in with a Hygienist and having a course of treatment with her and then maintaining your oral health by brushing and flossing twice a day and up keeing you hygiene and dental examinations by attending the dentist once every six month.
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your two bottom teeth i am sure that they can be improved. You did not mention what type of restoration you have on the bottom, but a cosmetic dentist can certainly get things looking great for you.
Please see my clinics website for further details- www.umbrellasmiles.com.

Q. I just came back from a check-up at my dentist and I have been told that I have periodontal disease. I wanted to know from you what is about the range in price that it would cost for treament? I do have insurance, but I am trying to figure out if this office is overcharging for the treatment. I will have the treatment done but it might not be by that office. Second question I had is that my dentist wants to put 4 crowns across my front teeth and I wanted to know which kind of crowns is good not the ones that are most expensive on me? For example they gave me a price of $4,480.00 for all four crowns and I would like to know if this is a crazy price or a normal one?
A. periodontal treatment is difficult to cost but starting with the basics, ask how much time is being allocated and with who. For example 4x 30 mins with a hygeinist will have a different fee to 2 1 hour treatments with a periodontist specialist dentist. #est crowns can depend on the functional needs of the case but all ceramic crowns with a Zirconia core are good in most situations, try to shop around locally for hourly rates and zirconia crowns to compare prices.

Q. Hi, Im 14 and have braces. Im very worried about the size of my gums. I have had my braces for a year and 8 months. My teeth are fine but I have very bulbus gums. They are progressing under my wire and are puffy. But they are normal colored. My orthodontists have told me to to brush in circles against the gums (from the top and bottom) and up into them. In the past I have been able to make them go down a little bit, but then they end up flaring up again. I have been trying again recently and Im not having any luck this time. Im worried this is permanent. Im also worried I’ll have to have surgery on my gums, which I dont want. Will my gums go down when my braces come off or not? Thanks
A. They will but it sounds like you need to see a hygienist and clean your teeth better

Q. Hi I grind my teeth (bottom row) at night and my dentist has told me the only treatment is dentures or teeth implants can you please let me know if there is any other treatment such as crowns or veneers. I am an extremely nervous patient. I thank you in advance for your help.
A. If the supporting structures to your teeth have been severely damaged ( predominately the bone) then implants or dentures may be necessary. If you have worn teeth only crowns may be an option. Please contact my pratice if you wish for a second opinion and possibly treatment. I have treatment many wear cases with great success

Q. I have a small grey area at the top of my front tooth and along four of my bottom front teeth. I know I need to get to the dentist, but at this time I do not have insurance and I need every dime I make. Can you tell me if this sounds like early gum disease? What are some things I can do at home to stop it from getting worse…until I can get to the dentist?? Thanks so much.
A. Keep it as clean as possible but you really need it checked out as soon as possible.

Q. why do i have a rotten smell coming from my dental bridge and how do i disfuss it until i can make it to my dentist. People seems to cover there face when i talk and the whole room stinks when i open my mouth ..Please help me i am in desperate need also my bridge is loose on one side not the other..Have u ever heard of that..
A. There could be some decay under the bridge you could also be getting food and plaque trapped between your teeth which is causeing the smell. You need to see your dentist and dental hygienist so you can keep your teeth cleaner.

Q. During a dental check up I was asked if I wanted a scale and polish. I said yes to this during which the hygienist got the drill out and started on the bottom teeth(previously this had been done by hand) she then went to an area where I had a fixed dental bridge and put the drill to it. It scared me a little and I put my hand up to stop. When I was with a previous dentist he said he would leave that are whilst cleaning but always said that I was to keep it clean. I have actually had the dental bridge now for about 30 years. During my latest check up the current dentist said there was a hole around the dental bridge area and said i had a rotten tooth fixed to the dental bridge. I am not sure about this, I have no pain and wonder if the hole he talked about was caused by the hygienist using the drill in a delicate area- should she have done this? Thanks
A.
The hygienist will have used an ultrasonic cleaner rather than a “drill”. This used correctly will clean away tarter and plaque leaving clean teeth. The likely hood is that the hole is due to decay and the hygienist has removed tarter covering over the decay. None the less please voice your concerns with your dentist
