Can dental crowns be whitened?

Friday, February 5th, 2010
Q. Although my dentist failed to tell me I have read enough to see that my coffee stained crowns are irreversable! This is devastating to me due to the fact I had all my front teeth crowned in the whitest on the chart for looks! my question is.. Are there ANYTHING that will whiten or brighten them any at all? I’ll be praying you can give me some tips! thank you so much! judy,
A. Porcelain doesn’t stain even with coffee. If it is stained it should only be superficial and will polish off with the hygienist

Should I replace fallen out crowns with implants?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010
Q. I have 3 crowns in my upper front teeth, 2 incisors, and 1 to my left. I recently had 2 crowns knocked out, and my dentist tells me I have cracked roots, and sugested implants as an option. Would i be better having all 3 done?? What could I look at as an aproximate cost?? And can I savve money by going to Eastern Europe??,
A. I recommend you book in for a consultation with an implantologist as an accurate could only be given once an implantogolist have assessed your mouth.Kind regardsDr Justin Glaisterwww.umbrellasmiles.com

What can be done for tooth gap caused by dental crowns?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010
Q. Hello Dr Moore, i had some front crowns fitted a few yrs ago, and now a gap between the two front teeth have appeared. I feel very self concious. I’d been most grateful for an answer to my problem. Many thanks.,
A. The gap is likely to be caused by the teeth shifting or the crowns loosening. Ask your dentist to take a look perhaps an x-ray would help to find out the cause of the problem.

Can teeth with veneers and crowns be straightened?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010
Q. Hello, Would really appreciate some advice as I live outside of the UK. I’ve had rather alot of work done on my teeth. I used to wear a wire brace when I was younger to bring in my eye teeth. (UK) Since then I had lost a tooth on my upper right, 2nd back from my eye tooth. As a result I have a gap which isn’t too noticable but my centre line from my front teeth and teeth next to the gap have moved to the right an slightly in the way. On my upper left, I have had crowns and a bridge as a result of my molars breaking from previous grinding.(Belgium). I also had lovely porcelain veneers on my upper front 6 teeth about 10 years ago (in UK). I’m now in the process of getting old mercury fillings replace to white porcelain inlays here in Belgium. I have slightly larger than average teeth but not unsightly. I’m still unhappy with my smile as I find that they are going more to the right, off centre and the upper front left 3 teeth are slightly more buck teeth than the left due the gap on the right. I feel this could be sorted out with the 6 month smile..? Or some kind of brace..? Even though my dentist thinks they look great..but knows they are off centre but won’t offer any solution. I feel after the birth of each of my 3 sons births during the last 5 years, my teeth have got more off centre and buck on the left! With all of the above, my question is can teeth with veneers, crowns, still be straightened without tension that would ruin the veneers. My confidence has been down re my smile for years.. Please just let me know it’s possible without redoing everything again?!!,
A. You will need to consult a dentist to get a second opinion and have a full examination with a treatment plan outlining the least invaisive way forward.Kind regardsDr Justin Glaisterwww.umbrellasmiles.com

Will my chomping teeth damage crowns?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010
Q. Most of my front teeth, top and bottom, are spaced, my two front teeth at the top are starting to wear, I do’nt grind my teeth but I do constantaly chomp, you would not know I am even doing it, as it is tiny movements, I have had a mouth guard made but I found it very uncomfortable, I have all ready asked my dentist about getting crowns fitted but am concerned about my chomping, and will my crowns last, please advise.,
A. If you are a chomper or a clencher you can have crowns or veneers but would be recommended to have a night guard made to protect the remaining teeth. Materials used today are very strong and can cope with surprisingly strong forces – however the way your teeth work together ( occlusion) needs to be carefully developed to allow the forces and the way you move your jaws to produce an even pressure on the crowns

How long before crown can be attached to implant?

Monday, January 18th, 2010
Q. Dr Tennet, How long (how many weeks or months) could you wait between the dental tooth implant being placed in the jaw bone and when the post and crown must be placed over it. I am looking for the maximum (not to exceed) wait time figure.,
A. No maximum time as implants can be placed in 80 year old patients who lost all thier teeth 60 years ago but still reain enough bone to support an implant.rob

Can ceramic crowns be built up to help with TMJ condition?

Friday, January 15th, 2010
Q. Can ceramic crowns be built up? I hope that’s not a dumb question. I suffer from TMJ in the worst way. My dentist put crowns on all my molars to correct my TMJ. Now it’s worse than ever. I think the top crowns are too short. i think he did this to get my bite in line. the pressure on my joint is constant now not to mention everything else. my front teeth are now banging against each other when i talk. i really believe they are too short. I’m in debt because of this dental work. I cant afford to have them taken off and redone. I’m hoping they can just be built up.,
A. Ceramic crowns can’t be built up long term as they are a porcelain that is fired in the laboratory. However you TMJ pain can be treated with ’splint therapy’ (like a custom-made hard plastic mouthguard that allows your TMJ to settle into it’s correct position) and minor adjustments on your crowns to stop them ‘banging into’ each other.

Veneers need replacing bu unsure if metal crowns are best option?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q. I have six veneers on my front teeth which are cracked and need replaceing They are 20 years old.My dentist recommeds metal porclein crowns for strenght but I am worried about the metal going black after time,
A. I would suggest you look at metal free (all-ceramic) crowns if crowns are advised. These are as strong as the metal bonded porcelain crowns now and look much more life-like

Could you tell me if crowns dentist placed are okay?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q. hi Dr. Caplan. i had my braces removed and my dentist placed crowns on my 2 front tooth. he injected anesthesia before he “trimmed” my teeth. after 2 days, i felt that my gums were swollen and now it looks like it has abscess and it is quite painful. i am worried, did my dentist missed anything? do my 2 front teeth need to be removed? if so, what are the options in replacing my 2 front teeth? thank you so much,
A. Sometimes the nerves of teeth are not 100% healthy and having teeth crowned can tipped the tooth over the edge into an abscess.  You should return to your dentist who may have to treat the nerves of your teeth – it is unlikely that you will loose your teeth.  Hope this helps

Treatment for discoloured teeth

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. I am a lady of 55 although I don;t smoke, drink red wine, etc – my teeth are grayish/yellow – my dentist says it’s an age thing and nothing can be done to improve the look of my (not to bad) teeth. I do have receeding gums and some bleeding – just wanted to know your oponion ?,
A. I would definitely try bleaching your teeth – this will lighten your teeth  ( any existing white fillings and crowns/veneers will not lighten and may need to be replaced following bleaching)

Teeth receding into gum

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. Dear Dr Glaister – due to childhood neglect and a terrible fear of dentist -i did not visit a dentist (apart from tooth removal) until i was 33. My dentist at that time said my oral hygeine had obviously been excellent, all i needed was 2 fillings. I have continued to visit my dentist regularly and now at the age of 52 – my teeth are “not nice” at the bottom – a small gap is now widening and i cannot align my teeth to smile. I am sure one of my front teeth has “disappeared a bit” into my upper gum!! I don’t have a full set of teeth – probably about 24. What would you suggest to make me “smile” and to save me having sunken gums etc in years to come? I’m terrified of having to have dentures – i want to salvage what i have left. Thank you,
A. we always try to save teeth if possible and I’m sure we can give you a great smile. First I would suggest we look at your gums and their health – to see (a) the cause of the teeth moving and (b) as they are the foundations of the teeth. Once they are healthy and strong, you could look at simple cosmetic options of whitening to further treatment such as veneers and / or crowns. Kind regards Justin

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. i am being treated for cronic periodantal at the moment. when the treatment has finished would i be able to have lumineers over my 3 crowns at the front top teeth to cover were my gums have receeded from the crowns.,
A. You could have porcelain placed over the crowns but it is probably better to have the crowns replaced once the gums are stable.

Should I replace dental crowns?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. I had my two front teeth broken when I was 12 years old and have had porcelain crowns since I was 15. I am now 33. I have an overbite, so my front teeth are noticeable when I smile, I have always been very self-concious about them. I have never liked my crowns, which were done by my local NHS dentist. They are slightly more yellow than my other teeth, which are all white and I do have very good dental hygiene and don’t have any problems with my teeth. I have asked my dentist about implants or new crowns, but they say i don’t need them replaced. I wish they didn’t protrude as much as they do, but am not sure implants are right for me or should I just get veneers or new crowns that are thinner and more white? Thank you,
A. I would definitely look at replacing these crowns as they are making you unhappy. New materials are very natural looking, giving an ideal colour match and reflecting light as natural teeth do. I suggest seeing a cosmetic dentist who should make a ‘wax up’ (new prototype) of your proposed smile before changing the crowns over. This will show you the results that can be achieved. You should work closely with him and the technician (who actually makes the crowns) to achieve a great result. I am happy to see you at www.umbrellasmiles.com

What are the constituents of gold cap?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. what are the constituents of gold cap and its advantage and disadvantage,
A. Gold crowns vary they do have different amounts of gold.  True gold crowns are still probably the longest lasting crowns I still like to use them at the back of my patients mouth.  Good gold crowns should cost the same as porcelain crowns they are not a cheaper option unless other non precious metals are being used.

Is it possible that I have a dental implant allergy

Monday, January 4th, 2010
Q. I have just had a dental implant done and the crown fitted a few weeks ago. A few days after the crown was fitted a started to have a horrible horrible taste in mouth several times a day and antibiotics and mouthwash that my dentist recommended have not made any difference. My dentist insists I do not have an infection and that he has no idea what could be wrong. He did and X-ray and said that it was fine. When I suck on the tooth the tatse fills my mouth. what could it be? the implant is very stable (not loose at all) and I have no pain and no real swelling or inflammation. Could it be an allergy to the implant?,
A. Often a temporary crown is used whilst the implant is integrating – hopefully the temp crown just needed recementing

Along with my crown the root fell out as well please advice on the treatment

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009
Q. I had a crown which has fallen out, along with the crown coming out the root fell out as well. It is one of the teeth near the front, top row. What advice would you give and is it expensive?

A. My advice here is free.An initial examination at StJohns  Dental in Birmingham is free , call 0121 643 0610 for details.A missing tooth can be replaced by an NHS denture ( lowest cost £198) a bridge or a dental implant ( Private treatment fee guide (£2000-3000 per tooth ) Obviously you also need to make sure that no other crowns or teeth are in poor condition before staring Regards Robwww.e-dentalpractice.co.uk
