What treatment can I have to replace old looking bridge?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010
Q. Hello Dr Glaister, I have had the same bridge on my bottom front teeth for about 15 years (It’s a Maryland bridge). When I had it done it was the best thing ever and improved my confidence but now it’s really looking dated and too obvious. What I was wondering is, do you have to change a bridge after a few years? Also I would like to have this bridge removed and placed with some thing more up to date because I know cosmetic dentistry has come a long way in the last 15 years! Would dental implants be best? What would you suggest? This has bothered me for many years but I have done nothing about it but this summer I have my sisters wedding coming up and would really like to do something finally.,
A. Bridges have improved alot in the last 15 years. If that is how long it’s been since you’ve had the bridge placed then it is very normal to need to replace them after 10 -15 years. Implants are a newer option and they do act more like a natural tooth, the only problem there is that in order to have implants placed you do require a good amount of bone in that area. You will need a consultation regarding this.Justin Glaister

Can you advise on replacing dentures which I hate?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
Q. hi Dr solanki,my husband and i are 60ish we have lost all our back teeth top and bottom,we have 6 teeth at the top and nine at the bottom front, please could you tell us our options,we both have dentures and hate everything about them, many thanks,,
A. Hi , thanks for your questions. You may wish to consider having dental implants placed to stabilise your existing dentures. Alternatively, you could have implants placed and fixed bridgework made to fix to the implants to fill the gaps which your dentures currently fill. I hope this will help, but if you require any further assistance, or would like to arrange a free consultation, please do not hesitate to contact me via our website www.kissdental.co.uk Kindest Regards. Should i opt for a bridge or implants?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
Q. I have a temporary bridge from 7-10 and had bone graft 7 months ago in 8 & 9 done by an Oral Surgeon in preparation for implant placement. I have lost teeth 8 & 9 a long time ago and had a lot of gum recession. My prosthodontist has referred me to a periodontist because my gums on tooth # 7 has been really red the past few months. The periodontist said I need crown lengthening. She doesn’t recommend placing two implants in teeth 8 & 9 due to esthetic reasons. I am confused because my Oral Surgeon wanted to place implants. Should I just have the bridge done at this point? Thanks.,
A. The question is very specific and without radiographs and a clinical assesment I cannot give a specific recommendation. I would suggest that you ask your prosthodontist to decide what would be the best option in your case. Rob

What can I have to replace partial denture?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
Q. I am 34 years old and when i was 19 my boyfriend was playing around with a gun and it accidentally went off in my mouth and shot 4 of my teeth out…..at the time they thought it was agood idea to give me implants after the procedure was done they said it wasnt a good idea because i had lost so much bone and gum so i have been living with a partial for 16 years. It is miserable and humiliating and I have not smiled in a photo since i was 19 i know that it is going to be expensive but if i just know in my head that SOMETHING can be done would make me feel better. I would save for it for the next 15 years if i have to. Its caused relationship problems, me being insecure and total humiliation……please tell me what i can do besides these ugly embarrasing partials my dentist has always told me there is nothing i can do and i refuse to believe that with todays technology there has to be something. Please help me im desperate>,
A. Thanks for your enquiry, it may be possible that you could have a bone graft, which once integrated would allow you to have implants placed and subsequently a fixed bridge restoration. The bone graft can be done using an artificial bone. I would recommend that you attend a dental implant clinical to gain a professional opinion on this. If you would like to arrange a free intial consultation with myself, please do not hesitate to contact me via our website www.kissdental.co.uk Kindest Regards. Dr Kailesh Solanki

Implant bridges have not aligned bite as dentist promised they would

Monday, February 15th, 2010
Q. I have had two implants in the upper right jaw and one in the lower right to support bridges for my missing back teeth.I was told this is what I needed to agline my bite but I cannot close my back teeth there is a massive gap at the back and this has made no difference to the shape of my face it still looks thin they really hurt and I have spent a lot of money please advise me thank you.,
A. Implant bridges are designed as a tooth replacement. This means that function and aesthetics should be restored as best possible. If this is not the case, then you may need to have the bridgework replaced. I advise that you stress these concerns with the dentist who carried out the work. You should be covered in the cost that you have already paid if you are not happy with the final result. Alternatively, you can have the work replaced elsewhere- but as you’re aware this will be extra cost.If you don’t feel happy going back to the same dentist, many places offer free consultations where you can get a 2nd opinion from another dentist.

What remedy is there for tooth gap?

Monday, February 15th, 2010
Q. Sir, I am having gap between two teeth in right side of the upper jaw. What is the remedies for this problem? Kindly advise me!,
A. It really depends on the size and cause of a gap. If you have a missing tooth dental implants, bridges or dentures can replace missing teeth.  If the gap is small orthodontics can move your teeth to close spaces.

Can you advise on all treatment in UK available for front tooth?

Friday, February 12th, 2010
Q. hello sir , hru?, one of my front teeth is misssing, how can i fix it? how much it cost in uk? give me all the options available plz . from cheapest to expensive way, thanks,
A. Thanks for your questions,There are three options available to you, to close the gap left by the loss of your front tooth. The first of these options would be a partial acrylic denture, which would cost £198 (NHS) and from around £275 (private). The second option would be a bridge, which would involve the preperation of either one or both of the teeth adjacent to the gap. The dentist would then take an impression of the prepared teeth, before a bridge could be made at the laboratory. The cost for this bridge would be £198 (NHS) or from around £350 (private). The final option would be a dental implant, which would involve an implant being placed into your bone. Once the implant had integrated, a permanent crown would be made to attach to the implant. The cost for a dental implant including the crown will vary between practitioners, but I currently charge from £2100 for ths service. I hope this information will be of assistance, but encourage you to contact me should you require any further help.Kind RegardsDr Kailesh Solanki

Bridge feels strange when biting but can this be fixed?

Friday, February 12th, 2010
Q. hello, i just had a permanent bridge put in today. The bridge felt okay at the dentist office but after getting home i noticed that my bite feels off. When i clamp down my teeth none of my other teeth seem to close shut all the way and chewing feels a bit awkward. Will this be a simple fix or will my entire bridge have to be replaced?,
A. Thanks for your question, it is possible that the bridge may just need a little adjustment, which is a small job for your dentist. I would recommend that you visit your dentist at your earliest convenience to assess your bite and make the necessary adjustments. Regards. Dr Kailesh Solanki

I have been recommended three implants but is this necessary?

Friday, February 12th, 2010
Q. I have a double bridge which needs replacing (according to my dentist). I have been sent to an implant specialist (I have already had an implant in another area) and have been told that not only will I have to be without the four teeth for 6 months (for gum reconstruction) but I will need 3 adjacent implants for these 4 teeth. Would you think it really necessary for me to need 3 implants? I only want it to look as it is now.,
A. I can not really advise you without seeing you ask your dentist id there are other options available there usually are.

Is toothe whitening causing pain?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010
Q. Hi, I was booked in for three front teeth out and a bridge put in place. I also asked if my teeth could be whitened and my dentist said yes and quoted me a price for the bridge and tooth whitening to both top and bottom teeth. However the day before my appointment a friend said I should check before my whitening because his dentist had said his own gums were not in good shape for him to whiten. I had gum surgery and all trimmed back about 25 years ago which showed tooth root. This has gradually got worse and my top teeth and gums have been sensitive for years with bleeding and swelling. Nothing I do changes his. The gums look and feel loose in places on the top. When I got to my appointment I mentioned this and asked would the bleaching process not be advisable with these gum pockets and the risk and he agreed with me it would. I am horified that he would have gone through this process if I had not have voiced my concern because he had priced me for bridge and whitening. Consequently I have not gone through with either the bridging or bleaching and am not at all keen to go back to him. I feel he could have caused my immense paid. What do you think? Help !!,
A. I doubt you would have been in immense pain from the tooth whitening however it might be good to find out if there is an alternative treatment he can offer you to improve the colour of the teeth before making the bridge.

Should I go for implant or bridge to replace tooth?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
Q. I had one teeth removed (2nd last from the back at the top) and my dentist recommended: – a bridge or an implant. My other teeth are in perfectly good health and I have no history of poor oral hygiene. A bridge is much cheaper but I worry it may weaken the adjacent teeth. An implant is a lot more expensive (and scary) but if it really last for life (does it really?) I m willing to try. Is that really the best choice? How long does the procedure (implant) will take (1 / 2/ 3 hours?) and how much is the pain (say compare to pulling the teeth out for example). any risk of infection or complication? I am 32 and in good health. THanks Mat,
A. Hello Mat it does sound like an implant is your best option as drilling down 2 healthy teeth for a bridge isn’t really advisable Although the implant is more expensive now it will outlast a bridge so should work out cheaper in the long term. The procedure should take about an hour or less and the after pain similar to having a simple extraction Regards Andrew

Will adding to dental bridge improve smile?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
Q. Dr. Moore,a year and a half ago my regular dentist made me a bridge of 6 top teeth in front,I have been unhappy since. When I am not smiling big ,it looks like I have no teeth, the teeth are perfectly aligned and looks nice at gumline, but I can place something flat along edge and it is obvious they are arched upward,I have expressed my dissatisfaction to my dentist,he finally suggested he could ‘add on’to my bridge to make my teeth longer, and if it did’nt work ,he could take it off and it wuold’nt damage my bridge. Can this be done sucessfuly?,
A. Yes it sounds like he is happy to sort this out so ask him to take another look

Is there any way to improve the look of my smile?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
Q. I have a bridge and crowns on my teeth witch i had done privately a few times over the years and never been happy with the results the centre line on my upper teeth is to the side, i had a accident when i was very young and lost my front tooth and the gap closed so now a side tooth has become my front tooth is there anything i can have done to inprove my smile so i can smile with confidence 1 am 47 years old,
A. I am sure there are plenty of options you need to find a good cosmetic dentist and have a consultation so your options can be explained.  Before your new teeth are made a trial set should be fitted to make sure you are happy with the shape , colour and feel , only then should the new teeth be made.

Can dental bridge be refitted?

Monday, February 8th, 2010
Q. Hi I have had a front single bridge crown since 2001 but unfortunately I must have ground my teeth whilst sleeping last night and the tooth became detached it is in perfect condition and so is the what appears to be metal filling material that bonded it to the next tooth. My obvious question can I have this refitted? My dentist did advise when she first fitted this that you never quite get the same strength on subsequent bonds? Thank You,
A. You could try to recement this bridge if your dentist thinks it’s worth while
