I Had Braces For Four Years But My Back Tooth Is Broken. I Don’t Know What To Do, Please Help?

Friday, June 6th, 2014
Q.

Hello Andrew. I had my treatment started in 2006. They told me I had to pay 3500 for 3 bridges I had to be transferred to a hospital dentist whilst they put braces on. I had braces on for 4 years for a gap in the front 2 teeth and since they last tightened them I have a dead nerve. The tooth’s going black and I have a broken back tooth. When they took my braces off I have a bigger gap than I did when I started.  Now they are say they can’t do anything else to them and I don’t know how to get it sorted can you help please? Thank you.

Dead nerve has turned my tooth grey; can you help?

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013
Q.

Hi,

I recently had an abcess and had to undergo root canal treatment, as well as some treatment on my front tooth where the abcess started from.

However the nerve had to be ‘killed’ and now my front tooth has grey areas where my gum is.
Obviously I would like the tooth to be as white as the other one but as it is a ‘dead’ tooth, is this possible without visiting a dentist?

I would like to be recommended some treatment to remove the grey area, hopefully you can advise.

Thanks.

My daughter’s tooth is grey, can teeth whitening help?

Monday, June 6th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr I recently asked the following question Q. One of my 15 year old daughter’s front teeth is dark grey. Her dentist says it is as a result of bleeeding inside the tooth, but it is still alive and recommended tooth whitening (smile-x) on just that one tooth. The tooth is not stained; the discolouration has happened inside of the tooth and so I don’t see how whitening the outside of the tooth will help. Is there any method of possibly whitening the inside of the tooth? I do not want her to have veneers. What is your opinion? Thank you for your time.
A. You cannot have internal bleaching on a tooth that has not had root canal treatment. I recommend you have this tooth x-rayed and ask your dentist to do a pulp test. If the reason for the tooth discolouration is internal bleeding, the tooth is definately dead. In this case it need to have a Root Canal, you then can try internal bleaching.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Our dentist says the discolouration must be as a result of a knock, possibly some years before. However, my daughter has never fallen or hit that tooth. It was the same colour as all her other teeth before orthodontic treatment started and the discolouration only became apparent the day her fixed retainers were removed. During treatment, following tightening of the retainers, she often had pain for a few days and also experienced occasional bleeding around the gum line in that area. Could it be the orthodontic treatment itself that caused this problem?

The dentist has x-rayed the tooth and tested it by blowing cold air on it. I am not sure whether a pulp test was done, but the dentist assures me that the tooth is not dead and that a root canal is not necessary. Therefore I presume that internal bleaching is not an option. I am suspicious that the whitening suggested by our dentist would just make the tooth look a brighter grey and possibly show up even more. Also, the dentist said she would have to do this treatment every two months for the rest of her life, which is quite a daunting commitment for someone so young.

I would very much appreciate any advice you could give me. Thank you.

Should I get legal recourse for dental treatments I am unhappy with?

Thursday, November 18th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Caplan, About 18 months ago I had two lower molars filled with Cerec inlays. One has been absolutely fine, but the other snapped in half after 7 months. My dentist replaced this with a second inlay, which snapped after 5 months. I suspected at that time that it indicated a problem with the inlay treatment, but rather than removing the inlay altogether and arranging a crown or onlay, my dentist chose to leave the greater portion of the inlay in situ and build a layered filling in the remaining cavity, free of charge. Shortly after this, I began to experience acute pain when the tooth came into contact with liquids, even of room temperature. I reported this to my dentist on an ongoing basis over 18 months, but he was unable to locate any obvious cause, even under x-ray, and attributed the pain to general sensitivity stemming from gum recession. I queried the integrity of the restorations repeatedly, and even other members of his practice hinted that if I was having such problems the restorations needed examination, but my dentist was unwilling to consider this option. In September, the tooth became extremely painful and infected and I was told I needed root canal treatment. The specialist I was referred to thought it better to try to clean and save the tooth, but that treatment appears to have been ineffective. Having paid £350 for the initial inlay, and a further £275 for the specialist’s “investigations”, I’m now facing root canal treatment at £600 and the cost of the subsequent crown. I’m really unhappy with the situation because I believe that with different treatment at an earlier stage, the death of the nerve could have been avoided. My dentist knows that I’m not convinced that this tooth has been treated correctly, but is suggesting that teeth can just die….. Should the dentist’s opinion always outweigh the patient’s opinion? How can I approach my dentist to secure treatment on a basis which we both consider fair? Should I simply change my dentist and have the work completed elsewhere? And finally, should I consider legal recourse to reclaim these costs if I can’t reach a compromise with my current dentist? It’s so difficult to challenge members of the medical profession, I really need some advice.,

What role did cotton wool have on my decaying tooth over a period of fifteen years?

Monday, August 16th, 2010
Q.
15yrs or so ago I had a dead nerve in my upper left 2 ….the dentist at the time recommended a crown. Whist my crown was being made i was fitted with a temporary crown. Recently this crown came loose so I went to my new dentist to have this re-glued. To my horror the tooth inside the crown was rotten and was beginning to rot my front tooth. I had been complaining to the dentist that there was a smell coming from the tooth. The dentist discovered that on what was lef of my tooth was a lot of cotton wool ….which appears to have been left from the temporary tooth back 15yrs ago. What I want to know is what role did this cotton wool have on my tooth decay (there was a lot of cotton wool) ?……or why would my tooth rot like this as I have great oral hygiene?,

The discolouration in my front tooth is now more apparent due to the dead nerve, what can I do?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010
Q.
I have a discoloured front tooth due to a dead nerve. I have had it for about 30 years. The tooth is strong and at the moment I have a porcelain veneer over it. It is about 15 years old and the discolouration is now showing through again. I go to my dentist twice a year and I have asked if there are any new techniques available to improve it. He told me that I would need a thicker veneer to cover the tooth and it wasn’t really worth doing. What would you suggest I ask him to do? Many thanks.,

Is my tooth sensitive? Or is it cracked?

Friday, June 4th, 2010
Q.
I had a large feeling done on first molar about a year ago since then the tooth has been extremly sensitive. Last week I bit on hard nuts and a few days later the tooth became more sensitive then before. Went to dentists and xray shows nothing. The pain comes and goes when cold or hot anything touches it even air.. Some days it bothers me more then others. Does this sound like sensitivity or cracked tooth?,

My back molar is turning black, why is this?

Thursday, May 6th, 2010
Q.
I am a 24 year old female. I’ve always had weak teeth, but healthy. I think my oral hygeine is great, as I usually brush 4 times per day and floss twice daily. I just noticed that the back molar on the upper right side of my mouth is turning black (only half of it). I have a filling in that tooth that I received around the age of 15 or 16. I am certain that it was not black last week. I have recently been put on antibiotics and allergy medication (Levaquin, Allegra, and Nasonex) for a sinus infection. The tooth doesn’t hurt at all. I have made an appointment with my dentist, but could not get an appointment until two weeks from now. Should I try to get an appointment with another dentist sooner? What type of prognosis should I expect?,
