Can I have braces fitted if I have a severe case of periodontitis?

Thursday, November 18th, 2010
Q.
I am 26 now. I had braces when I was 20 until 23. But I got periodontitis and now my teeth are croocked again and getting bigger and longer. 80% of my bones got melted, now I have splint so that my teeth will not move. Is there any hope that my teeth can still be corrected even if I have less bones now? what is the right way?,

I am unsure about Invisalign treatment and that I am not just another case to the dentist. Can you help me?

Q.
Dear Dr Hughes, I have always, since a child, wanted be able to smile without embarrassment caused initially by one tooth that was in the way (crooked) but there are other reasons now that I keep my mouth closed e.g. bottom teeth overlap top, crooked mis-shaped teeth. I’ve feared dentists alot due to many painful experiences when young, but recenlty I’ve managed to at least go for regular checkups with little need for intervention. I did talk to my dentist about the bottom teeth overlapping the top and she suggested Invisalign, which after an initial free consultation, it was stated it could be corrected. However, it’s not clear how much can be corrected unless I spend the £500 for the consultation to have the putty mould done. Before I venture down this route, I’d like to take another consultation for other options as I try to wear a mouth-guard at night for grinding (not always a problem, just under stress at times) and not sure what affect this may have. The dentist hasn’t given enough information and I feel it’s more of a sale than caring for my needs as the other offer was to wear braces. I’m happy to visit your surgery for a consultation and would appreciate some direction in what next step I should take. I may need to cancel my appointment on 3rd September for the putty-mould as I’d like to understand what else is available (e.g. 6month smile?). I look forward to hearing from you. Kind Regards,,

I am 62 and have been advised to have the Inman aligner for my two front crooked teeth instead of veneers. What would be the best route?

Q.
I am a 62yr old female and have 2 crooked front teeth I have been recommended to have fitted an Inman Aligner instead of veneers – I am concerned I may not be able to tolerate this in my mouth and removing it easy when eating etc – would this be the best route for me and would there be ongoing costs with this method,

What cheap treatment could I get for crooked, chipped and discoloured teeth?

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010
Q.
I don’t know what to do and it’s making me depressed. I’m 25 and have crooked, chipped, and discoloured teeth. My bottom set are fine apart from the front 4 teeth which are clearly overcrowded and crooked, they all four are also chipped because of an accident, but the dentist said there was nothing he could do about that. My top set is fine apart from one of the front two teeth over-lapping the other slightly, which I’m also concious about and also one of them is chipped too. I’ve given up smoking because of the effect it had on colour, I brush twice daily. Also I have a tooth at the top in the middle that has decayed and crumbled away and which I KNOW I should have out because it’s been like that for years. It’s just getting me down and every solution I see seems to costs thousands. I wish I could have an accident so all my teeth fall out and i’d have to have it all reconstructed and nice. That sounds a bit dramatic but its the way I feel. I never smile. Have you any advice on cheap treatments? or anything.. anything at all? Many thanks,

I have been told braces cannot be fitted unless I have some of my bottom teeth shaved. Is he right to do this?

Friday, October 15th, 2010
Q.
I have been referred to the dental hospital for braces on the NHS. I am 37 and I have had periodontal problems and as such my teeth have moved making them crooked. I saw a private dentist who said he cannot fit braces unless I have some shaved off my bottom set thus stopping the top set catching and moving. He said the top set (where I am having a brace ) is unstable. Is he right or will the dental hospital still go ahead and fit braces even of my teeth move ! Also if I offered to pay a part of my treatment would I be able to offer to pay towards a clear brace or one that’s not a fixed one ? Or do I have to have metal ones. are they the only ones I can have or can put some money towards other types. sorry I know there is a lot of questions there.,

Are dentures the only option to fix my teeth? I don’t want dentures as I am only 35!

Monday, October 11th, 2010
Q.
Hi. I have had problems with my teeth for many years. It all started when I went to my dentist when I was about 14 with crooked teeth at the front. My parents were advised that my back teeth were not strong enough for the type of braces that were available then and he said my teeth would straighten up when I got older. Bad dentist. I am now 35 and have many problems with my teeth and its just getting worse. I dont drink or take drugs, I work hard and clean my teeth as well as I can but with the problems I have its just getting worse. I now have some missing teeth, underbite and many more problems. I would love to be able to smile again without feeling ashamed. The price for sorting out my teeth is totally unaffordable. I dont earn enough to get the financing from the dentist. I cant get any help with that either. My only option is to go for dentures which I really dont want at 35 ! Do I have any other choices ?I would be very grateful for any advice you may have.,

Would I be able to get veneers ar my age?

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010
Q.
I want to have my teeth straightened and whiter. My teeth are slightly crooked on the left side and they are stained yellow, possibly due to my dietary habits (ie curries etc). I consider my lips to be my best feature but my crooked, yellow teeth ruin a lot of pictures and have made me very self conscious. I am almost 22 and I would like to have veneers but in. Would it be possible to do so at my age?,
