Should I get a crown after my root canal treatment?

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011
Q.

Hello, I have had pain in my back tooth on eating or drinking anything cold for over a year now. I recently visited Andrea Ubhi’s dental practise in York, on the first visit I was told I needed root canal treatment, on the second visit that I needed a crown fitting because of a crack in my tooth?! I would be greatful if you could advise me on what do you suggest I do now? Thanks.

My tooth cracked and had to be extracted after root canal treatment. Can a crown be fitted?

Monday, November 29th, 2010
Q.

I have had RCT on UL6 and was left for 6 months until any other treatment (check up) Just a week before my appointment, this tooth fractured and resulted in being extracted. Would the length of time this tooth was left, in a brittle state, be the reason this fractured? I had finished antibiotics 2 weeks prior to RCT so would infection be reduced? Would a temp crown be fitted in all RCT cases? Thankyou

What is the process for crown and veneer replacement and how does a gum graft procedure work?

Thursday, November 18th, 2010
Q.
Hi Mark, I was the victim of violent crime some 10 years ago where I21 and 22 were knocked out, taking much of the surrounding gum tissue and bone with them and I 11 was cracked in half. I received treatment at the Leeds Dental Institute back in 2001 where they placed two implants, abutments and crowns in and cemented then veneered I11. It was decided by the surgeons at the time that, due to the large amount of discharging bone fragments, that to risk a gum graft was not sensible. Therefore I currently have a slight lack of gum surrounding I21 / 22. I am not happy with the positioning or visibility of the crowns today. Recent x-rays show that the implants are perfectly healthy with no further receeding of the surrounding tissue or bone. I am interested in understanding the process for replacing both crowns and the veneer to more aethetically pleasing versions, combined with a tooth whitening process. At the same time I would like to specifically understand how a gum graft can be factored into this proceedure and what the inherent risks are today and the likely costs of such treatments. I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Do I need a crown fitted if I have a cracked tooth?

Thursday, November 18th, 2010
Q.
I went to the dentist with a mild toothache on my left side second molar. The Dr. couldn’t find anything wrong until he noticed a small crack. He says I need a crown put on it. I’m trying to get other opinions. I’m worried he’s only doing this for the $$$. Thanks.,

I have a two cracked teeth after being hit in the face over a year ago, but I am scared to the dentist. Can you help me?

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010
Q.
I have a really big fear of the dentist, this fear has meant I haven’t been since I was abour 10, I am now 22 and my teeth are really bad, They are crooked at the front and are uneven throughout my mouth. I got hit in the mouth a year and a half ago on the left side of my jaw, I was in severe pain and could not open my mouth and felt that my bottom left back tooth had been knocked out of place, this tooth is now rotting away and cracked badly, the pain is so bad I am taking 24 nurofen a day just to ease the pain abit. The top tooth where I got hit has also started to crack, I can not afford a dentist though and I recieve no benefits. I am hoping to get married next year and I want the confidence to be able to smile in my pictures instead of “Pouting” all the time, please help me, what can I do?,

My tooth feels strange; sharp and it wiggles when I touch it. What should I do?

Thursday, September 30th, 2010
Q.
I am 20 yrs old. My dentist told me I do not have wisdom teeth and my 12 yr molar on my left side just started growing in. I noticed today that it feels strange, its very sharp and part of it moves if I wiggle it. I had a friend look at it and they said it looks deformed but not broken. Its the strangest thing. I know I should go see my dentist but I just wanted some sort of answer until then. I know this is not normal. But have you ever heard of this happening or know what caused it?,

Is it possible to get all my teeth whitened, even though one of my teeth is turning black?

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010
Q.
Hi, My teeth need whitened, all are slighly discoloured however when I was younger I cracked the front left tooth and required a veneer, this tooth is beginning to darken dramaically and I think it will turn black soon. Is it possible to get all my teeth whitened and what would you suggest? (Bleaching, laser treatment or any other affordable procedures) Thank you.,

Does my tooth need extracting?

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010
Q.
I have 1 (single) crown in my mouth #3 tooth. It is all porcelain. I have no metal fillings…. A 5 year old crown was removed and replaced 7 months ago because it was itching and aching dentist said maybe it was an allergy to the metal under the porcelain so we would replace it will all porcelain. Since the procedure I have been in pain. Loud crack was heard upon removal of crown. Dentist said it broke down too far but there was nothing we could do about it. Tissue was red and inflamed upon removal of crown. Burned and ached when tempory was placed. Endodontist said that it looked like the tooth could be re-absorbing (sp?). Have had a sting in the distal part of the tooth for 7 months. Was told that the distal root was sensitive and bleeding and needed a retreat root canal. Endodontist said the distal root had a black ring in the gutta percha used to fill canal. This was removed and replaced and I was told that the bacteria was causing the sting. Topical on tissue takes away the burning sensation for a short period of time. Oral Medicine doctors did allergy test to see if the sting was actually being caused by an allergy. Test proved negative. Oral Medicine said maybe a piece of cement was in the distal part of gum because the tissue bled when the explore was used. Periodontist evaluated tooth and the tissue around the tooth and the tissue had 4-5 pockets around the crown (All other tissue is healthy 2′s) Periodontist completed a crown lengthening because the tooth was broke down too far and had improper margins. Hurts to bite down on anything hard or crunchy. Tooth is sore to touch with tongue. Tooth aches and or stings in the distal part of tooth CONSTANTLY.(Sometimes I will have referred pain on the tissue next to #3) But mostly it is concentrated around only this tooth. Oral Medicine doctor said maybe it is Neuralgia but never did any diagnostic tests. Dr. put me on Gabapentin that did NOTHING for the pain instead just made me feel drugged. After 2 weeks I was still in pain and my friend had me make an appointment with a neurosurgeon. After reviewing my case he did not believe I have TN…I asked and was instructed on how to wean myself off of the Gabapentin. I visited my GP doctor last week. She contacted my neurosurgeon through email as she is also a U.W provider. He did not think he could help me. And I surely do not want to take up his time with unnecessary appointments. I am praying I can get your blessing and know that it is O.K. based on my history and symptoms to assume this is in fact is a tooth issue. I do not want to spend my time in any more pain just because another specialist wants to make a heroic effort to save a tooth that in reality is not going to get better…. In a nut shell…. Pain is the same as it has been during the 7 months…Constant sting/ ache. I do not have any triggers such as wind, cold, and eating on the opposite side of the mouth is completely comfortable even therapedic. It is just the left side #3 crowned tooth that is uncomfortable to chew on. A sharp pain is caused when I bite down and then slowly subsides. I have an appointment with an oral surgeon to evaluate the tooth for extraction tomorrow. This pain has had a very negative effect on my overall health. I have not wanted to exercise in 7 months because of the tooth hurting, yet eating is not a problem (on the opposite side) so I have gained 25 pounds. My blood pressure in October prior to the tooth’s pain was 117/76 it is now 159/90. Is it safe to say this is a tooth issue? I am allergic to iodine and would prefer to not chance a test that could pose a risk if this is truly just a tooth that needs to be extracted…Please advise…. Your thoughts are very much appreciated!!!! Thank you so much!
