A. for NHS treatment contact your PCT ( Primary healthcare trust) dental contracts division and ask for details of local sedation services for dental anxiety .
for private options check the practice offers IV sedation then investigate a few local ones before deciding on the best one for you.
Sounds like you are ready.

Q. Hi, I have just returned from a visit to my dentist today. My appointment was for preparation for a crown on upper molar, second from back. This tooth had broken in half followng root canal treatment and filling 5 years ago. My current dentist put a temporary cover on it and we left it for six months to ensure that the seal hadn’t been breached. When he removed the temporary today he advised he would be unable to save the tooth as what was left of the tooth was partially below the gum-line rendering a crown that would not be viable. He suggested either a bridge, which he felt was not a good option due to the grinding down of the adjacent teeth and suggested an implant at a cost of £2,000. Having done some research on the internet some sites have said that crowns can be placed even if there is only a root left (that has had root canal treatment) and a post can be inserted into the root for the crown to be attached to. Can you advise if this is a possibility please? I look forward to your response. Many thanks.
A. the details are all important here. some teeth can be managed with crowns some are better extracted.
the size, shape and location of the residual tooth : filling are all important.
Before implants there were several common ways to solve the problems. But the fix might only last 5-10years, Implants can be more predictable in some cases. so tend to be increasing in popularity.

Q. I wanted to get my teeth whitened but i have a crown on my right front tooth and on my left front tooth the anamel wore away really bad so my dentist put some sort of layer on top of it , can i still whiten my teeth and if i do will it change the color of my crown?
A. Thanks for your question, whitening procedures will only whiten your natural tooth tissue. Therefore any restorations which you have had placed in the past would remain the same colour. When my patients, who have a crown or veneer wish to whiten their teeth, they would normally have the restorations replaced afterwards. I hope this helps.

Q. Hi, I have had problems with mt teeth for many years after being on stroids as a child. In April I had my entire top set of teeth taken out in preparation for implants, I lost confidence in my dentist after many issues. The final straw was when after quoting verbaly that it would cost in the region of £8-10k, he then after extractions quoted 15k!! I have no real idea of the correct price and am getting quotes. I live in Derby and would like to find someone I can trust/within a reasonable travelling distance and at an honest price. Can you advise/support? Thanks for your time.
A. Hi

Q. I’m thinking about getting a brace as my two front teeth are inverted, i beleive this was caused by my wisdom teeth putting pressure on them (I have since had all my wisdom teeth removed) I would like to know if a brace could fix them and make them straight, how much it will cost, and how long the procedure will take and what type of braces involved. If you can get back to me with the above information I will be very grateful.
A. I’m sure a brace will help to straighten the teeth. There are lots of different types of braces available including fixed or removable. If you would like me to give you an idea of your optins please feel free to contact me on 01245 268 494.

Q. I recently have finished my treatment with invisalign with a clinic in harley street. Yet, me teeth are still protruding from the front.Although, the arch in my mouth is now aligned. I expected my front two teeth to be pushed in completely. I now have been told that I will have to have 4 teeth taken out and fixed braces for 18 months for them to be pushed in. Are there any other options which can be taken as this treatment is very long?
A. Hi
Unfortunately it is impossible to give options without looking at the mouth. If you have concerns, then you may consider getting other opinions from other clinics. Sorry i cant help more than that.

Q. Hi there. I noticed on your website that it says the cost of treatment can be between £1000 and £2500 per treatment – does that mean ‘Per trip for treatment’ or the treatment as a whole (ie: by set of aligners).
A.
I thnk from the details that you provide, you are loking into different teeth straightening methods, so I can tell you that £1000 – £2500 would be the price range for the different systems. That would be a full set of aligners in the case of Invisalign for example. I hope that helps.

Q. I am a professional trumpeter with a protruding upper tooth which affects my playing. I am wondering if having it removed and a dental implant inserted would help. How long after initial consultation would you typically be doing the surgery? How long after surgery would I be able to play trumpet? How many appointments are normally required?
A. Because you are a professional musician the procedure would need careful planning . Same day implants are suitable in some cases, although the success rates are higher if there is a delay of 3 to 6 months before restoration. an initial consultation at the stjohns dental practice is free contact amy for details 01216430610

Q. hi i got a single yellow upper front teeth. it looks very ugly . iwant to get rid of this problem .if i go for surgery how much it cost for me pls help
A. Thanks for your question, you may wish to consider having a veneer placed on the tooth. This is a thin layer of porcelain which can be used to alter the size shape and colour of your tooth. The shade of your veneer could be chosen to match your other teeth, hence creating a more uniform look to your smile. Although the costs will vary between practices, you should expect to pay between £400 – £600 for a veneer. Many cosmetic practices who offer these services, will also have the facility to offer payment options such as interest free credit to help spread the cost. I hope this will be of assistance to you.
Kindest Regards

Q. I have a hairdressing salon. A friend is investing in laser teeth whitening products including a laser machine. my friend is not a dentist and is thinking of having someone who is n ot trained in any form of dentistry to do the treatments. My friend is asking me to rent some space for his little business. I do not feel comfortable about this and am concerned with public liability issues. I beleive it is illegal for someone not trained in the dentistry field to administer teeth whitening by laser.
A. you are correct the general dental council has been prosecuting similar cases. their website gives details. Rob

Q. Hi, I had a brace as a child to correct two prominent front teeth. Which was done successfully, but over the years they have slowly returned to how they were. My question is would it be possible for these teeth to be replaced by implants, or is the only option the lengthy process of having another brace fitted?
A. The most likely option for you would be brace work – possibley invisalign that would be more socially acceptable

Q. Hi, I am a 49 year old male and i have lost all but 3 of my top teeth, and dont have that many left on the bottom, can you help me please?
A. The treatment for you will probably be a combination of dentures and implants. The best result would be a fixed bridge attached to implants but this depends on the amount of bone available for the implants and of course cost

Q. I’m 22 and my teeth are awful! I’m embarassed to smile, laugh and often get told to ‘cheer up’ because of my regular closed mouth expression. My teeth are discoloured, sensitive, and crooked. This is due to lack of dental care when I was a child. I regularly use whitening products, and sensitive toothpastes, I visit the dentist but just seem to have filling upon filling. I’m so scared of one of my front teeth completely falling out. I honestly feel like I would be happier with false teeth, which is a bit of a daunting prospect at the age of 22. Being a student, I cant afford cosmetic dentisty and even the financial plas seem to want £100+ a month, which just isnt an option for me. I don’t seem to have a local dentistry school, and even ones far away seem to have full waiting lists. I’ve considered using a student loan to go abroad to have ‘cheap’ dentistry work done but hav been advised this could make things even worse. What should I do?
A. Its very difficult to have extensive treatment on a budget. You might be able to get some done on the NHS which is usually cheaper than paying privately. You always take a risk when going abroad as often the cost isn’t that much different, especially as the pound is quite weak against the Euro at the moment. You might also have complications that require further visits abroad. I guess the best option would be to save up as much as possible and to start the treatment in stages perhaps using a finance plan to help spread the costs?

Q. Hi, is there any treatment for crowns ’slipping’ from the gums. This has happened to around 4 of my crowns (they have been there for around 5 years). You can see where they have slipped by the darker colour between the gum and the tooth. My dentist has told me the only solution is to replace them which will cost approx.£1800. is this right??? They are all front teeth (top). Many thanks.
A. hi many thanks for your email, this unfortunately is correct, generally when gum recession happens around crowns the only option is to remove the existing crowns and replace them with new ones. The cost for the crown work does seem reasonable if this is helpful.
