Why does the cost of veneers vary so much

Friday, December 11th, 2009
Q. Hi Andrew, Ive noticed that there is quite a large difference in prices for veneers. Could you explain why this is and also give me the range of prices at your practice and what these apply to? Many Thanks Steven

A. The cost of veneers is dictated by the experience of the clinician, material used and the cost of the lab work. We charge £500 for our basic but very good quality veneer to £800 for our top technician who has years of experience creating a very aesthetic final result in difficult situations. When choosing the dentist find out who they use for the lab work and how much experience they have before deciding as price alone isn’t the only consideration regards andrew

Need all the options in cosmetic dentistry for my extracted teeth.

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
Q. Im due to have 5 rideside extractions & though one tooth has already rotted away Im concerned that the extractions will impact on my smile, what would you reccomend to fill the gap Im going to have, Im only 34 & quite horrified at the thought of being unable to smile

A. Thanks for your questions, there are a few ways in which you can close a gap left by extractions:1. A partial denture, which may be attached to existing teeth using metal clasps for security.2. A bridge, this would bemade by crowning the teeth at either side of the gap, and attaching false     teeth to the crwons which would then sit in the gaps left by the extracted teeth.3. Implants. A dental implant is a titanium rod which is placed into the jawbone. A false tooth , or in the     case of more than one implant, a bridge is then attached to the implant. I would recommend that you consult with a dental professional to discuss these options further and establish which would be most appropriate for yourself. If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.Kindest RegardsDr Kailesh Solanki

With a flurosis front teeth can I have composite to make it look natural?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
Q. Dear Mr Solanki, I have a problem with my two front teeth whereby they are quite mottled/fluorosis. The rest are white and straight. I wonder if it would be possible for this to be disguised with composite to look natural. I dont want the shape of the teeth to change – ideally i wouldnt want it to look obvious that anything had been done. Do u offer this service in your practice and what sort of price would i be looking at for these 2 teeth to be treated in this way to blend in with the others. I would really appreciate your advice, thank you

A. Thanks for your questions, it should be possible for a dentist to disguise the flurosis on your front teeth with composite veneers. However, you may also wish to consider porcelain veneers, which I believe would acheive the most aethetcally pleasing results. i hope this will be of assistance to you.Kindest RegardsDr Kailesh Solanki

Is it necessary to have veneer for protruding right incisor?

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009
Q. My upper left incisor is slightly discoloured and worn. The right incisor is slightly protruding. My current dental prectioner is Luton has shaped the tooth and prepped it for a veneer (yesterday). There is sensitivity in the tooth. I’m not enthusiastic about veneers, as he has already veneered the canine tooth to the left of the incisor he has prepped. The cost of venner is £400. He would like to veener the protruding right adjacent incisor, however I have refused to veneer a healthy tooth. So he has suggested contouring. Shouldn’t I just have had the left incisor contoured and not veneered?

A. It sounds as though you would be well advised to have your teeth repositioned with a simple brace ( these can be invisible and may only take 8 to 12 weeks to move your teeth!).  I do a large number of veneers but usually only when the teeth are in a good position and the patient needs their teeth to be made prettier.

Can kids have Invisalign treatment?

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009
Q. I was wanting invisiline and i was just wondering if invisline was for kids too. Also, for the majority, i have straight teeth, but there is this one crooked tooth that is in the bottom jaw towards the front and it is a little worse then the picture that is on the main website home page. Not as bad though. I was just wondering if invisiline will work for my tooth.

A. Thanks for your questions, Invisalign do offer a product called Invisalign Teen which tailored to the need of teenagers. I would recommend that you visit an Orthodontist or a Dentist who provides Orthodotic treatments, for a consultation to discover which systems would be most beneficial to you. Many of these practices offer a free initial consultation, to allow you to discover your options without any financial loss. I hope that this will be helpful for you and wish you well with your treatment.Kind RegardsDr Kailesh Solanki

Can I fix the gap in the back of my teeth consider plaque?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hello, If your reading this, THANK YOU for taking the time to answer my question. Ever since my last dental visit I noticed this gap in the back of my four bottom front teeth. Before it started to bother me I noticed a white lining around the bottom of my teeth (just on the bottom four in the front) It wasn’t until the other day that it started to bother me really bad. My tongue will NOT stop playing with the gap in the back of my two front teeth. I hope I didn’t make it worse by trying to figure out what it was. I can stick my fingernail between the gap and under my teeth where the white lining was on my teeth. I think I picked the white stuff off. My guess, it would be plaque.(I thought that stuff was hard to get off) How much would I be looking at to fix the gap in the back of my teeth? AGAIN THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME YOU WOULD BE HELPING ME SO MUCH WITH A REPLY.

A. I would advise a thourough hygienist appt -if it is residual plaque/calculus it will be removed and the teeth polished if it is a cavity you will be advised accordingly

Need to fix my bite and get gum graft, please suggest.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I am nearly coming to the end of invisalign treatment and have found that my top front teeth have gone forward and caused me to have a bit of an overbite. Also my lower left canine gum has receded, which must be due to brushing too hard as I don’t have gum disease. Will invisalign refinements be able to push my front teeth back a bit? or is there any other treatment that can fix my bite? Where can I go to get a gum graft, as it is causing me a lot of anguish.

A. I guess refinement might help although this is very case specific. At my clinic in Chelmsford we have a periodontist who could carry out a gum graft, please call us on 01245 268 494 and we will be happy to arrange a visit to the clinic for an assessment.Regards  Andrew

What ball park figure would be acceptable for having implant?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I am 63, had five front teeth ( 4 incisors and one cuspid) removed between the age of 17 and 21. I have all my other teeth intact. I have never got used to a partial, and wondered if there was anything else I could try at my age and so long after removal. ie implants of some sort. I know that if there is not enough bone left it can theoretically be grafted from elsewhere, but realistically, do you think this is possible and what sort of ball park figure would I be looking at if it were?

A. This is possible but you will  need a CT scan to be properly assessed.  A ball park figure for this type of treatment would be !0k to 15K depending on how difficult the case is

Can Invisalign fix my underbite as I have edge to edge bite?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, im a 21 yr old male that had braces to fix a slight underbite when i was 14-16, for 2 years after i had my braces off i started noticing my perfect bite was becoming more uncomfortable. As of now, im 21 and have an edge to edge bite, my mandible grew, but i dont have an underbite yet, just edge to edge which is very uncomfortable. Im assuming i will have to go back to braces and elastics again, but i was wondering if invisalign will work for my situation? Can I use elastics with invisalign, I read online that invisalign can fix underbites?

A. This is very case specific so a proper assesment is required to see if you’re suitable for invisalign. If you need elastics then a normal fixed brace might be best

Explain me on different disciplines in Cosmetic Dentistry.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hiya, I am in year 10 and planning to be a cosmetic dentist, however, I am really confused! Are there different fields within cosmetic dentistry? I was under the impression that a cosmetic dentist is a specialist in just vaneers etc… That is what I want to specialise in. Please could you help me, i’m really confused about it all! Thank you very much for your time.

A. Cosmetic dentistry involves many disciplines including function of teeth / jaws, gum and tooth health, orthodontics and restorative dentistry.  It is not just about sticking veneers on teeth.  It is great that you are interested in dentistry but cosmetic dentistry is about making profound changes to someone’s teeth in relation to not just how they look but how healthy and how they function to make sure that they last a long time.  Work hard and join us in the wonderful world of cosmetic dentistry.

I feel I am stuck with unprogressive dental treatment.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi. I have recently broken some enamel from the back of one of my front lower teeth. I have now visited mt dentist 5 times and am back to square one. First he did a filling on the back, and the day after I had to go back as there was a very sharp edge. 1 week later im back again as it had come off. I saw a different dentist at the practice as my own was busy, who replaced the filling . 2 days later, it came away yet again. I then go back for the 4th time and the dentist decided to put a sealant on the tooth to stop the sensitivity as obviously a filling it was not working. A couple of days later, this too came off. Back I go for the 5th time. Now, the dentist did explain that these were awkward to do at the very begining, but im now back to the start postion again, with the dentist saying there is nothing more he can do, so just smoothed it down as best he could. But it still drives me crazy as my tongue keeps catching it and there is some slight sensitivity. And of course ive wasted £65. The dentists are all English, and it is an NHS dentist. And they are all extremely nice people too !!! Should I try a private dentist ? Or am i stuck with it forever ? help !

A. The cause of your fractured tooth should first be diagnosed  - it is probably an interference from the tooth opposite it.  A small adjustment of this opposing tooth should allow the filling to stay – hope this helps

Does wisdom teeth effect teeth crowding?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, I have had problems with my bottom right wisdom tooth since around June 2008, I went to my dentist and she said that they were just starting to come through and took x-rays which were “fine”. However in January 2009 I went back to her as they were causing me discomfort but were being relieved by pain killers, she took my over bite measurement and told me that they didn’t like to remove wisdom teeth and that I had to just wait for them to come through. After experiencing discomfort for a few months I just took the dentists advice and have been waiting for them to come through. However in May 2009 I suffered the most excruciating pain and had to go to the emergency dentist who informed me that I had an infection and that there was no room for the tooth to come through, he prescribed me amoxicillin and told me to see my dentist about getting it removed. On the same day I had to go to accident and emergency as the pain was still excruciating and they gave me Codine Phospahte and stronger strength paracetemol. I went back to my own dentist a week later and she told me that it needed to come out and prescribed me Metronidazole, took x-rays which are being sent to a surgeon. My problem is that with the bottom right wisdom tooth coming through it has moved my bottom front teeth out of place and x-rays indicate that I have another wisdom tooth ready to come through on the other side, would it be necessary for them both to be removed? And would I be eligible to have the NHS pay for braces to be fitted as from the x-rays the dentist surely must have seen that there would not be enough room for the wisdom teeth to come through? Thank you for any help and advice you may be able to give.

A. Wisdom teeth do not cause your teeth to crowd – sorry I cannot help further
