Can I fix the gap in the back of my teeth consider plaque?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hello, If your reading this, THANK YOU for taking the time to answer my question. Ever since my last dental visit I noticed this gap in the back of my four bottom front teeth. Before it started to bother me I noticed a white lining around the bottom of my teeth (just on the bottom four in the front) It wasn’t until the other day that it started to bother me really bad. My tongue will NOT stop playing with the gap in the back of my two front teeth. I hope I didn’t make it worse by trying to figure out what it was. I can stick my fingernail between the gap and under my teeth where the white lining was on my teeth. I think I picked the white stuff off. My guess, it would be plaque.(I thought that stuff was hard to get off) How much would I be looking at to fix the gap in the back of my teeth? AGAIN THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME YOU WOULD BE HELPING ME SO MUCH WITH A REPLY.

A. I would advise a thourough hygienist appt -if it is residual plaque/calculus it will be removed and the teeth polished if it is a cavity you will be advised accordingly

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Need to fix my bite and get gum graft, please suggest.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I am nearly coming to the end of invisalign treatment and have found that my top front teeth have gone forward and caused me to have a bit of an overbite. Also my lower left canine gum has receded, which must be due to brushing too hard as I don’t have gum disease. Will invisalign refinements be able to push my front teeth back a bit? or is there any other treatment that can fix my bite? Where can I go to get a gum graft, as it is causing me a lot of anguish.

A. I guess refinement might help although this is very case specific. At my clinic in Chelmsford we have a periodontist who could carry out a gum graft, please call us on 01245 268 494 and we will be happy to arrange a visit to the clinic for an assessment.Regards  Andrew

What ball park figure would be acceptable for having implant?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I am 63, had five front teeth ( 4 incisors and one cuspid) removed between the age of 17 and 21. I have all my other teeth intact. I have never got used to a partial, and wondered if there was anything else I could try at my age and so long after removal. ie implants of some sort. I know that if there is not enough bone left it can theoretically be grafted from elsewhere, but realistically, do you think this is possible and what sort of ball park figure would I be looking at if it were?

A. This is possible but you will  need a CT scan to be properly assessed.  A ball park figure for this type of treatment would be !0k to 15K depending on how difficult the case is

Can Invisalign fix my underbite as I have edge to edge bite?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, im a 21 yr old male that had braces to fix a slight underbite when i was 14-16, for 2 years after i had my braces off i started noticing my perfect bite was becoming more uncomfortable. As of now, im 21 and have an edge to edge bite, my mandible grew, but i dont have an underbite yet, just edge to edge which is very uncomfortable. Im assuming i will have to go back to braces and elastics again, but i was wondering if invisalign will work for my situation? Can I use elastics with invisalign, I read online that invisalign can fix underbites?

A. This is very case specific so a proper assesment is required to see if you’re suitable for invisalign. If you need elastics then a normal fixed brace might be best

Explain me on different disciplines in Cosmetic Dentistry.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hiya, I am in year 10 and planning to be a cosmetic dentist, however, I am really confused! Are there different fields within cosmetic dentistry? I was under the impression that a cosmetic dentist is a specialist in just vaneers etc… That is what I want to specialise in. Please could you help me, i’m really confused about it all! Thank you very much for your time.

A. Cosmetic dentistry involves many disciplines including function of teeth / jaws, gum and tooth health, orthodontics and restorative dentistry.  It is not just about sticking veneers on teeth.  It is great that you are interested in dentistry but cosmetic dentistry is about making profound changes to someone’s teeth in relation to not just how they look but how healthy and how they function to make sure that they last a long time.  Work hard and join us in the wonderful world of cosmetic dentistry.

I feel I am stuck with unprogressive dental treatment.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi. I have recently broken some enamel from the back of one of my front lower teeth. I have now visited mt dentist 5 times and am back to square one. First he did a filling on the back, and the day after I had to go back as there was a very sharp edge. 1 week later im back again as it had come off. I saw a different dentist at the practice as my own was busy, who replaced the filling . 2 days later, it came away yet again. I then go back for the 4th time and the dentist decided to put a sealant on the tooth to stop the sensitivity as obviously a filling it was not working. A couple of days later, this too came off. Back I go for the 5th time. Now, the dentist did explain that these were awkward to do at the very begining, but im now back to the start postion again, with the dentist saying there is nothing more he can do, so just smoothed it down as best he could. But it still drives me crazy as my tongue keeps catching it and there is some slight sensitivity. And of course ive wasted £65. The dentists are all English, and it is an NHS dentist. And they are all extremely nice people too !!! Should I try a private dentist ? Or am i stuck with it forever ? help !

A. The cause of your fractured tooth should first be diagnosed  - it is probably an interference from the tooth opposite it.  A small adjustment of this opposing tooth should allow the filling to stay – hope this helps

Does wisdom teeth effect teeth crowding?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, I have had problems with my bottom right wisdom tooth since around June 2008, I went to my dentist and she said that they were just starting to come through and took x-rays which were “fine”. However in January 2009 I went back to her as they were causing me discomfort but were being relieved by pain killers, she took my over bite measurement and told me that they didn’t like to remove wisdom teeth and that I had to just wait for them to come through. After experiencing discomfort for a few months I just took the dentists advice and have been waiting for them to come through. However in May 2009 I suffered the most excruciating pain and had to go to the emergency dentist who informed me that I had an infection and that there was no room for the tooth to come through, he prescribed me amoxicillin and told me to see my dentist about getting it removed. On the same day I had to go to accident and emergency as the pain was still excruciating and they gave me Codine Phospahte and stronger strength paracetemol. I went back to my own dentist a week later and she told me that it needed to come out and prescribed me Metronidazole, took x-rays which are being sent to a surgeon. My problem is that with the bottom right wisdom tooth coming through it has moved my bottom front teeth out of place and x-rays indicate that I have another wisdom tooth ready to come through on the other side, would it be necessary for them both to be removed? And would I be eligible to have the NHS pay for braces to be fitted as from the x-rays the dentist surely must have seen that there would not be enough room for the wisdom teeth to come through? Thank you for any help and advice you may be able to give.

A. Wisdom teeth do not cause your teeth to crowd – sorry I cannot help further

Can old age person have dental implants and teeth whitening?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hello, my mother who is 76 wants to have her front teeth made less prominent.she has been told by her dentist that dental in plants would help and also to have teeth whitening. I was woundering if porcelain cosmetic crownds would be just as good, also cheaper.

A. This may be the case if the teeth underneath are healthy and the gum health is good.  A diagnostic waxup to assess the position of teeth will be necessary before proceeding – hope this helps

I have relatively large front teeth and considering cosmetic treatment.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I haven’t been visited te dentist for a while now, but haven’t expereinced anything major with my teeth. The only thing concerning me with my teeth are the way they look. My front two teeth are quite large, but the only look large as the next set of teeth are small. I’m 20 now but it feels as though my front 4 teeth going bent especially mt 2 ’small’ teeth. i feel so paranoid as i smile alot. I now find my smile to be more smaller and tighter. I’m not sure if braces is a good option although i would like straight teeth all over (my bottom teeth are not too straight either. I’m not keen on braces and i know the pricing to correct my teeth will not be cheap or even a ‘little affrordable’. I’ve haerd about Invisalign. I’m quite interested. However i’m also interested in something that will sort out the problem with my 2 ’small’ teeth, so that they are equal to the rest of my teeth. Is there something that i could have for the small set of teeth, that won’t damage my own teeth and will last me for a long time?

A. To change a shape of the tooth, veneers may be possible. Either composite or porcelain may be possible. I would recommend a consultation to allow the dentist to answer your specific questions.

I have loads of question between Clearstep & Invisalign.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. CLEARSTEP VS INVISALIGN I have a few questions about ‘invisible braces’: What are the differences between the two? How long will it take? I have been prompted to take action as I am getting married at the end of the year and although from the front my teeth look quite straight from the side they look really uneven. If I started it asap would it make much difference by December? I am happy to continue for longer, I would just like some difference by then. How much does it cost? Which one is more cheap/expensive? Are the effects lasting? I had a metal brace as a teenager that improved my teeth a bit but I don’t think it was kept on long enough. I would be willing to wear a retainer if it keeps my teeth nice. Is Clearstep a suitable alternative to cases where Invisalign would work? Does Clearstep require attachments to the teeth the same as Invisalign? Could you suggest me a good professional cosmetic dentistry expert in Oxford? Thank you in advance for your attention,

A. HiI would recommend a consultation to answer your many questions. unfortunately i do not know of anyone in oxford. Clearstep and invisalign are both invisable brace systems. Each case is differnt as everyones mouth is different.

I have decided on Invisible braces but would this work for my lifestyle?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, I am contemplating invisible braces but I think I have a few problems and I am trying to figure out the best way of doing this. I will be leaving for the Caribbean for 6-12 month contract (in about 3 months time). If I get the invisible braces put on in this country what do I do about the follow up sessions with the dentist? I work as a Divemaster and I will be diving every day, will this affect my braces in any way? I have considered veneers but I do prefer the braces option.

A. Hello, it really depends how much movemnt that your teeth require some people can align thier teeth in 6-8 weeks some cases takes over a year it really depends on you. Also diving shouldnt really affect your orthodontic treatment

How much cost am I looking to replace my metal crown for porcelain ones?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. I had 10 metal bonded front upper crowns 19 yrs ago. They still look ok ,however I woudn’t mind replaceing them with more natural looking porcelain ones .Is that easy to do? Also due to acid erosion(eating disorder) my back teeth now need crowned ,can I have it all matched up.How much cost am I looking at?

A. You can have this done.  Whether it is easy depends on how you cope with dentistry. Presumably pretty well if you already had plenty of dentistry before.  The cost per arch for a full set of crowns is in the region of £12000 to £15000
