Could you plz give some details for resin composite crown?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. Hi, Dr. Glaister: Dentist said I had a vertical crack in my lower left molar (tooth number 18) in the back of the tooth. It doesn’t hurt although sometimes I feel sensitivity when I chew. He said I should have a crown. I heard the cheapest crown is a resin composite. What is the life expectancy of that kind of crown and can it be done quickly in one visit? Is it different than a metal or porcelain crown in

that they don’t have to grind your teeth?

A. You have to reduce the tooth surface for every type of crown. I recommend you visit your dentit to see what he can offer you in terms of materials and costs.

How would brace affect the composite fillings in my teeth advice?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Q. Hi, I had two composite fillings in my two front teeth a month ago…I wanted to know, if i wanted to get braces how would that affect my teeth…aslo the tooth that had the most composite in it, feels slightly thinner (in width) than the other. It feels as if its not as durable as the other, like its more prone to breakage; would u give me some advice pleasseeee!!! Thank You

A. Please seek an opinion of an orthontist. It shouldnt affect your fillings, however this may depend on the type of brace you have.

How much roughly composite bonding would actually cost me?

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Q. Hello there. I would just like to know how much roughly ‘composite bonding’ would actually cost me. I havnt been to a dentist in years, but i think im in need of serious attention as my enamel is showing through, badly…and its knocking my confidence. My front tooth is also quite mishapen, and im not after ‘perfect’ teeth, just a bit to help me smile again!

A. composite bonding will cost roughly £100-200 a tooth,

I had a composite filling which broke off what can i do?

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Q. Dr. Moore, A year ago, I had a composite filling put into my front tooth. A few days ago, the bottom part of the tooth broke off in two places and the composite filling from the front remaining part to the top has come out completely; leaving only a thin part of my real tooth behind. Is this tooth salvagable for a crown?

A. Without seeing you I can’t tell for sure but it is usual for a there to be still enough tooth for a crown even after a breakage.

Can u give me some information about porcelain composite crowns?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Q. Hi I have a composite crown bonded to a metal post that was fitted 20 years ago when I broke my upper front incisor that I would like to replace for cosmetic reasons. Due to my gums receeding a few mm you can now see a line of grey natural tooth around the gum line. I have asked my dentist about the most natural looking replacement and she is very keen to fit another metal/porceline composite crown. I have never been happy with the one I have, it has always been a different size, shape and colour to my other main incisor so I asked about an all porceline crown and she said that her practice fits procera crowns but that because I have a metal post and not a ground down tooth to use as an anchor that an all porceline crown would be too thick and would break. I made it clear that cost was not a consideration but she insisted that a composite crown was my best bet. Apart from the crown my teeth are completely average, they are average size, shape, colour etc. Your opinion would be valued. Thanks

A. There are number of different options for porcelain crowns that can be used for different situations to produce a great result.  Composite crown sould not appear to be the obvious solution unless the prognosis for the tooth was poor – to keep costs down.  They are sometimes used to reduce the bite forces on implants. For a dark post a procera or zirconium or a well made porcelian bonded to metal crown would be my choices.

Common mistakes during composite fillings

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Q. Hello Doctor… How are you?? I have questions about the composite fillings , What are the common mistakes that could happen during the procedure of a composite filling ?? and why these mistakes could happen ? Thanks alot doctor Wish you the best

A. I am fine- back from holiday!  thank you for asking.  Dentists are highly trained and there are no real common mistakes – failure to remove all the decay , over preparation, poor bonding technique, poor moisture control ETC  but these are unusual.  Hope your filling is successful

Im 15 and Ive hardly no enamel left what can i do to help my teeth?

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Q. i am 15 years old and i had mono for up to a year; i got really sick and i puked everyday for 2 years in a row, my dentist told me i have hardly no enamel left is there anything i can do to help my teeth? so far i’ve had 2 teeth pulled and i’m about to get another pulled. i want to know if lumineers are right for me; i would really like to fix my teeth; no matter what i do my teeth stay yellow; what should i do?

A. Thanks for your email. We need to protect these teeth and build them up. Has the vomiting stopped? This must be your first treatment. Then I suggest a fluoride mouthwash.

Depending on how much enamel has been lost they can be covered with composite resin bonding (tooth filling material) or crowns this would also improve the colour. I suggest you find a cosmetic paedodontist (children and teens dentist). You are unlikely to be a suitable candidate for lumineers. Good luck!

My bottom teeth are perfect but my front 4 teeth have gaps between them any tips or advice?

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Q. hiya, i have nice white teeth… my bottom teeth are perfectly positioned but my front 4 teeth have gaps between them. everyone tells me they are fine but they are quite big gaps. the rest are fine its just the front 4. im 23 and getting married next may (2010), i was wondering what, if any my options are to closing the gaps up so i feel more confident- im reluctant to get 4 veneers as ive heard many bad things? any tips or advice? thank you :-)

A.

Options to close gaps are
1.  Veneers,  When done well these are predictable and look good. Ultrathin Veneers like Lumineers need no preparation (drilling of the tooth) cost £600-800 per tooth probably need 6 teeth to make the teeth even sizes.
2. Cosmetic bonding ( filling) no tooth preparation needed, average life 2-5yrs. costs (£100-200 per tooth)
3. Orthodontics various systems including clear positioners that dont look like braces, such as Clearstep or Invisalign. Costs about £3000 for one arch. Others like inman aligners will achieve some movement of the front teeth only at lower costs.

My authodontist took off half my tooth and quite a bit of enamel how can i get it repaired

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Q. Hi, when I had my braces removed my authodontist took off half my tooth and quite a bit of the enamel on some others. How can I get it repaired and how much would it usually cost?

A. Usually the orthodontist will skim off the bonding resin that held the brackets in place, if any tooth has been lost then cosmetic tooth bonding can replace this usually at a cost of around £100

I would like to have a bonding to fix the gap inbetween my front teeth can i get it done in NHS?

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Q. Hi, I am under 18 years of age, and I have a gap in between my teeth; this maybe due to the piece of skin attatched in between it, I believe its called a frenum or frenulum. I would like to have bonding to fix the gap, would this be free under the NHS? And if I was to have the piece of skin cut if I decide not to have bonding, will this get rid of my gap? Thankyou

A. Removing the skin will help to prevent the gap re-occurring but will not cause spontaneous closure.
Bonding between the teeth should be available on the NHS, I would recommend you seek someone with some cosmetic training to give you the best results possible.

can composite bonding be removed easily and will the underlying tooth look normal?

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Q. I had a small 1mm gap in my upper two front teeth filled with composite bonding a year ago. The results are great, and it looks really natural. However, I have recently decided to investigate braces as I have come to the conclusion that i would like to straighten my teeth. With this in mind, i would like my dentist to remove the composite bonding, so that a brace can be used to close the gap permanently. First, can composite bonding be removed easily? My dentist did the filling so well, it seems impossible to tell which is tooth and which is bonding? So, is it possible to remove it? And will the underlying tooth look normal? Also, when the filling was done, the bonding was polished and i can see a less shiny surface on some of the surface of my teeth. I will ask the dentist to polish this after the gap is revealed again, but If some bonding remains, does this effect how well fixed brace brackets would stay on? Also, when the brackets are removed at the end of treatment, would the bonding have stained, is this permanent, or would polising after the brackets are removed get rid of it? Thank you for your time.

A. hi
it should be quite easy to remove the composite filling without any underlying teeth being damaged with no effect on bonding in future and no compromise to your bracework.

A couple of front teeth is slightly overlapping which one is the better solution veneers or invisalign

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Q. Hi Andrew, I have a couple of front teeth that slightly overlap. Four are rough edged at the bottom and they are not even in length. I have 6 teeth filled with white filler (not sure of technical term) due to damaged caused by brushing and other means. People say I have beautiful teeth – they’re pretty white due to having bleached them in the past. However, I think they could look better. Do you think that veneers would be too expensive for the little change I require? Would Invisalign be a better solution for me? Maybe you may have other ideas? Thank you for your time.

A. Hi, for crowding at the front of the mouth Invisalign or an Inman aligner might work well, veneers will entail drilling down the teeth so they might be a bit destructive. The lowers if heavily chipped might benefit from veneers or composite bonding

what cosmetic procedure can be done to fill in the space between my front teeth

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Q. hi, ive just has gum surgery to save my teeth, the outcome was very good.however, i know have bigger spaces between some of the front teeth ,they look like black triangles. i do lose some bone but not a whole lot. what cosmetic procedure can be done to fill in these spaces that were left after my surgery. Thanks for your time

A. These black triangles are caused by bone loss although cosmetically you can hide these I would be worried about carrying out cosmetic work on teeth that are not very strong as I would not be sure how long it would last.

I am planning to do a composite veneer what would be the cost for that in india

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Q. I am planning to do a composite to get a better smile by hiding some gaps between my teeth. If I am doing it in India, what would be the cost for that? If I do the veneer, I have to do it for 6 teeth and what would be an average cost for each and time it would take to fix it?

A. I am unsure of the cost of dental treatment in India, but I would advise that you shop around first. Don’t necessarily go for the cheapest options. You get what you pay for, and I would definatley advise a good quality cosmetic dentist to carry out the work.
Composite fillings on the front teeth is an option- as long as you are aware that they can stain slightly over time and may need replacing in the future.
Veneers are also a good option for closing the teeth. You do not necessarily need 6 veneers. It is hard for me to comment, as I haven’t seen you myself.
Expect to pay around £700 per veneer at a good practice.
Some dentists can treat you very quickly, but I prefer to take time in planning the smile design first and making sure that you are happy with the planning before treatment commences.
Hope this helps.

my daughter bonded teeth is shorter and discoloured than the other can you advice

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Q. hello, can you please help!,i have a very distraught 16 year old daughter who a couple of months ago chipped one of her front teeth, leaving a semi circle chip at the bottom of the tooth. We took her to our usual dentist and he filled it,and it looked ok,but about 2 weeks later it came out, this happened again, then on the third time it came out she saw a different dentist as the other had left,he seemed to file down even more of her tooth and did a terrible job on the bonding, as now her tooth is shorter than the other and you can see a colour difference.I dont want to take her back there again as i feel it will just be made worst again!,can you give me some advice on the options for her tooth and recommend a good cosmetic dentist, this is quite upseting for her as she feels it has ruined her lovely smile. Many thanks

A. Hi.
At 16, she is at a very impressionable age and needs her confidence to be boosted. The only problem with composite build ups for chipped teeth- is that they are renowed for chipping off again. Perhaps you should look into if she grinds or clenches her teeth- as this could be the cause.
The first ting I would recommend, is to keep having the composite restorations placed. there are some good systems on the market that match the colour really well- you also need a good dentist to do this! You need to be aware that over time, the composite may discolour slightly. As she is only 16, veneer are a drastic option- but nevertheless it IS an option. Hope I have helped.
