Uneven shaped teeth needs to be analysed for the correct treatment.

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
Q. Between the ages of 17 – 19 I had traditional braces. I am now 29 and find that my teeth have relapsed over time as my dentist warned they might. I wear a nightly retainer (which is a replacement if one I had and broke) but my teeth aren’t as they were when I first had my brace removed. The main issues are: a small ‘Madonnaesque’ gap between my front two teeth and the teeth wither side of those are rather short. I was wondering between veneers, invisalign and lumineers what I could consider to correct the problem. I want something that will completely close the gap without too much damage to my teeth which are white and in very good condition.

A. If the teeth are poorly shaped veneers will be the best option – lumineers are just a branded veneer. If the teeth are a nice shape then I wold recommend another brace ( may be invisalign or lingual braces) .  Once the teeth are in a good position then I would recommend a fixed retainer – V loop retainer allows you to floss your teeth and holds the teeth in their corredt position

Can Invisalign fix my underbite as I have edge to edge bite?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, im a 21 yr old male that had braces to fix a slight underbite when i was 14-16, for 2 years after i had my braces off i started noticing my perfect bite was becoming more uncomfortable. As of now, im 21 and have an edge to edge bite, my mandible grew, but i dont have an underbite yet, just edge to edge which is very uncomfortable. Im assuming i will have to go back to braces and elastics again, but i was wondering if invisalign will work for my situation? Can I use elastics with invisalign, I read online that invisalign can fix underbites?

A. This is very case specific so a proper assesment is required to see if you’re suitable for invisalign. If you need elastics then a normal fixed brace might be best

Should I consider implants over braces I have time issues?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. One of my front teeth is not aligned with the others because it was taken out a little bit late in my childhood years while removing the milk teeth. Now am 28 and I would like it aligned with the other teeth. Braces take a long time to realign teeth, thats why I wanted to choose a dental implant. What is the process of getting a dental implant and its advantages or disavantages over the other methods.

A. Braces can take as little as 8 weeks to realign your front teeth – far better than an implant

Can I depend on retainers without having braces again to move teeth?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I had my braces off a few years ago and i wear my retainers everyday. I now notice that one of my tooth is moving forward and im freaking out about it. my ortho tried stripping the canine teeth a bit but i don’t see an improvement. Can i wear the T4K (trainers for kids) to make it go back to its original position? Is there a way for my tooth to go back without having braces again? Can the retainers do something about it?

A. A clear aligner system using a few aligners should move your teeth back into place – get a permanent retainer to hold them in place

I have relatively large front teeth and considering cosmetic treatment.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I haven’t been visited te dentist for a while now, but haven’t expereinced anything major with my teeth. The only thing concerning me with my teeth are the way they look. My front two teeth are quite large, but the only look large as the next set of teeth are small. I’m 20 now but it feels as though my front 4 teeth going bent especially mt 2 ’small’ teeth. i feel so paranoid as i smile alot. I now find my smile to be more smaller and tighter. I’m not sure if braces is a good option although i would like straight teeth all over (my bottom teeth are not too straight either. I’m not keen on braces and i know the pricing to correct my teeth will not be cheap or even a ‘little affrordable’. I’ve haerd about Invisalign. I’m quite interested. However i’m also interested in something that will sort out the problem with my 2 ’small’ teeth, so that they are equal to the rest of my teeth. Is there something that i could have for the small set of teeth, that won’t damage my own teeth and will last me for a long time?

A. To change a shape of the tooth, veneers may be possible. Either composite or porcelain may be possible. I would recommend a consultation to allow the dentist to answer your specific questions.

I have loads of question between Clearstep & Invisalign.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. CLEARSTEP VS INVISALIGN I have a few questions about ‘invisible braces’: What are the differences between the two? How long will it take? I have been prompted to take action as I am getting married at the end of the year and although from the front my teeth look quite straight from the side they look really uneven. If I started it asap would it make much difference by December? I am happy to continue for longer, I would just like some difference by then. How much does it cost? Which one is more cheap/expensive? Are the effects lasting? I had a metal brace as a teenager that improved my teeth a bit but I don’t think it was kept on long enough. I would be willing to wear a retainer if it keeps my teeth nice. Is Clearstep a suitable alternative to cases where Invisalign would work? Does Clearstep require attachments to the teeth the same as Invisalign? Could you suggest me a good professional cosmetic dentistry expert in Oxford? Thank you in advance for your attention,

A. HiI would recommend a consultation to answer your many questions. unfortunately i do not know of anyone in oxford. Clearstep and invisalign are both invisable brace systems. Each case is differnt as everyones mouth is different.

I have decided on Invisible braces but would this work for my lifestyle?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, I am contemplating invisible braces but I think I have a few problems and I am trying to figure out the best way of doing this. I will be leaving for the Caribbean for 6-12 month contract (in about 3 months time). If I get the invisible braces put on in this country what do I do about the follow up sessions with the dentist? I work as a Divemaster and I will be diving every day, will this affect my braces in any way? I have considered veneers but I do prefer the braces option.

A. Hello, it really depends how much movemnt that your teeth require some people can align thier teeth in 6-8 weeks some cases takes over a year it really depends on you. Also diving shouldnt really affect your orthodontic treatment

I have orthodontic probelm due to which I have cuts in my cheek now.

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. When i was 17 years of age, i required braces and the dentist told me i would be contacted in 3-4 months, she was polish and i dont think she new the procedures well, i was busy for a-level revision so couldnt make any dentist appoinments. now im 18 nearly 19 and i require braces as my teeth are out of line which unables me to chew my food properly(my front teeth dont connect), also my wisdom teeth burrow into my check causing cuts in my cheek, i was wondering if this procedure will cost me and if so how much, also if i should be entitles to free care from the nhs as the case is more than just wanting nice teeth.

A. You would need to see an NHS orthodontic practice to see if you qualify for NHS treatment and what the charges would be. Your local PCT (primary healthcare trust ) will have details of your local practices.Rob

I need braces for my bottom teeth would NHS cover this?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. Hi im 18 and a full time student at college. I need braces on my top teeth they stick out so much I can fit my thumb in the gap between them and my bottom teeth and poke out between my lips. Do you think I would get fixed braces on the NHS or I would have to pay? If I had to pay around how much isit for a top brace? Thanks

A. You might get a brace on the NHS but if your 18 or over you may need to pay, it depends on the dentist you see. As a general rule fixed braces start from £1500.

Can lower teeth overlap be fixed by Inman Aligner?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. Hi I have always had a slight overlap on my lower front teeth, however this appears to be getting worse. I am in my early 30s and have all my wisdom teeth, could they be casuing the overlap to worsen? Would removing my wisdom teeth help the issue or would the Inman Aligner be the best method? If so what kind of costs would be involved?

A. The wisdom teeth are not causing your teeth to cross – all teeth naturally want to drift forwards and if your teeth are not sitting next to each other in an even way then they will be prone to slipping.Inman , invisalign or a lingual brace would be a good option for you.  I often would advise a lingual brace to quickly sort out your problem – this would cost approx. £1540 in my practice.

Small gap in front teeth is getting bigger may be due to gum disease.

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009
Q. I have consulted a few doctors (dentist) So far answers were not very positive. I have gap in between my front lower teeth. They are moving and gap is becoming bigger. What can be done to either cover the gap or close it?

A. The gap could be closed with either a brace, veneers or by bonding White filling to the teeth it would be good to find out why this gap is getting bigger though as it might be asign of underlying gum disease

Huge front gap needs to be filled with payment options.

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Q. Hi. im very unhappy about my teeth and as child i had braces for 6 years on and off and my teeth have never looked any different. My main problem is that i have alot of gaps at front and both of my side teeth were removed when i was 12 and have only grown half a tooth back each side. it doesnt look pretty and i feel i can not smile at all. i am desperate for surgery as im getting married 2011. could i get it on the NHS or any other way to make the payment any easier?

A. The NHS is unlikely to be an option unless there are health issues.  Privately  there are payment plans in my practice that can spread the payments over a number of years.  If this is of interest please contact my practice to discuss this matter further
