Q. My toddler ran at me with a heavy toy and chipped my top front tooth so it’s on the diagonal. I have had a temporary filling from an emergency NHS dentist. ( I’ve never had a filling before so know nothing about the proceedure etc. ) I saw my dentist today and he informs me that he will be able to do a new filling and make it look like a normal tooth. The rest of the tooth is fine. He said I won’t need a veneer, although could have one done later. I am worried the filling won’t be strong enough (my dentist said I would have to be careful biting into apples etc) What should I do. At the moment I’m finding the temporary filling very wierd and uncomfortable. Would a veneer be a better option or should I stick with the filling?

A. I would try a new filling first then see how it goes and how it looks. It is sometimes very difficult to get a great aesthetic result with a single veneer although it would be a bit stronger.

Q. Hello there, i have just come back from a visit to the dentist i have not gone for a number of years due to being so scared of what they would say and do!! I have come back with an apptionment in December for 2 fillings and to have a chipped toothe capped, he has put a temp cap on it, my main question is that i have slilt Gingivtis, thius has scares the living days out of me as i am only in my 20’s, he tld me to change my mouth wash, and get a soft Toothe Brush and it should get better, what toothe Paste would be the best for this??? And how long should this temp cap last for??? Many thanks

A. The temp cap should last till your next visit but be careful with it. If you have bleeding gums you could try corsodyl mouthwash for a week or so but it can stain the teeth. Ask the dentist if you can see his Hygieinist to give them a good scale before your next visit.

I never smile in photos and my teeth severly effect my confidence. Can I get crowns/vineers on the NHS?

A. You might qualify for NHS treatment but it is cosmetic treatment so I can really say for sure whether you will get your teeth sorted out on the NHS. Go to your NHS dentist and see what they can do for you.

Q. I am about to have a crown replaced. the preparatory work has been done. Initially my dentisit said i could have a porcelain crown ..it is the last but one bottom tooth .. i have had my wisdom teeth removed. When he had prepared it adn i mentione dthe porcelain crown he said he had prepared for a gold crown .. that he CIULD prep for a porcelain but it would invlove more destruction of the tooth and i could have a metal base with a white covering ..to which i agreed ..but having thought about it psoke to him again becasue i wasnt sure about the appearance of this tooth . At which point he said this was the best chioce and that we were lucky to have been able to have a second bit e of the cherry in replacing the crown. He had not mentioned this before. So the new metal base crown is due to be fitted on Monday .I am hoping it will beok ..i spoke to a freind who had some and he was happy wiht his. meanwhile part of a large filling in the back tooth next to it ..the last one .. has chipped .. Would a porcelain onlay or crown be suitable for this tooth in theory??? Last time he repaired a back filling ( large one ) he saaid only amalgam was suitable . I am quite anxious to not have any more mercury in my mouth and i do not like the appearance even on back teeth.

A. You do not have to have aalgam flings if you don’t want to. Granted, amalgam is a strong choice of material- but I agree that it is not the most aesthetic!!! There are strong choices of material available such as lava crowns.
Porcelain bonded to metal crowns can be quite aesthetic- and for a back tooth is quite a good compromise. These type of crowns are not recomended for the anterior teeth (ron teeth) as they can often show the metal underneath and from a cosmetic point of view- this can look quite unnatural.
I hope all goes well.

Q. hello Doc, I am 34 years old and I have a primary tooth between my front tooth and the #2. it protrudes infront the #2, which is still there but twisted behind it. the primary tooth is also shaking slightly. I’ve been to the dentist and i was told i might have to do an extraction. the dentist also gave me this explanation for my top row i hope you can understand. 432112234 the 1s are the two front teeth and they count in both directions as you can see, i have two #2s on the right one of them being the primary tooth… my smile is not one im very proud of so is there any advice you can give me in terms of getting it straightened out? thanks a mil!

A. Its difficult to give you exact ideas without seeing you but one option might be removing the extra tooth and then having them straightened with something like invisalign.

Q. I went to a local dentist and ask about my options for my two front teeth that are SLIGHTLY worn away on the bottom. he said he would do crowns. I said NO. BECAUSE I didn’t want so much of my teeth to be taken away. He said he would do veneers. I left the office devistated because he took my two front teeth down to miniature chicklets. He put on temps that are joined together in the center and are very tough.

I am sick over this.He is charging more for veneers than crowns. He has now choice to me but to do crowns. What can I do. I called the office and left a message to call me immediately on Monday. What is my recourse?

A. Ideally you should have discussed this before any treatment was done, sometimes cosmetic bonding can repair chipped teeth in a minimal way. If the teeth are now prepared veneers are the better option. Please talk to your dentist.
