I has a fall and cracked my front teeth will veneers be suitable

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Q. Hello, I hope you can advise me on this. I am very upset and disappointed because i had fixed braces removed last year with good results. Unfortunately following a nasty fall my front two teeth are now cracked and one of them has a chip in it. I am really sad as i didnt want to go down the veneers route, however i must fix this as its really getting me down! I am going to just have to accept the fact that i need to pay to sort it out. What i’d like to know is, is it possible to have veneers placed on just the front two, or front four upper teeth? or would this look odd compared to the rest? my teeth are very straight so it is my hope that they would not need to be shaved down very much. Basically i want to replicate my natural teeth. Do u think that veneers can look natural? many thanks for your time and advice.

A. Very sorry to hear of your accident. You must feel terribly upset after all your hard work wearing a fixed brace for so long.

In this situation I would advise the treatment of as few teeth as possible – preferably only the damaged ones. It certainly is very difficult to get veneers to perfectly match natural teeth. It can take several attempts to achieve an acceptable result. In my surgery I use a technique called Cerec which allows me to custom match the colour and shape in the surgery literally while you wait. It is a one visit procedure using very high tech computer equipment to make the veneers and we can achieve excellent results. Please visit my web site and have a look at what might be possible for you.

I have had 6 crowns for 30 years I want to replace them can I be sedated

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. I have 6 porcelain (front teeth) crowns lasted since 1978, im looking to replace them and wonder what the process involves, how they get them off for a start! can i be sedated and what will the actual treatment involve. as far as i can remember they are on gold posts.i think they look dated and would like them whiter. thank you so much for your time and look forward to your reply

A. The process has of having 6 front crowns made from the patients point of you has not changed to any great extent since your last set were made. Having said that the anaesthetics are better and the materials the crowns are made from are vastly superior to your existing crowns.

It is unlikely that you need sedation as local anaesthetic should make the procedure pain free. The crowns are usually easily removed by cutting a line down the middle and releasing the seal of the underlying cement.. After this the underling shapes would be adjusted where necessary and impressions taken of the new shape. Temporary crowns are placed and the final ones are ready to be fitted about 2 to 3 weeks later.

There is another way of giving you new crowns. In my practice we use the Cerec method – this involves scanning the shape of the underlying tooth with an infrared camera and designing the restorations on a computer . The crowns are then milled and glazed to give you new crowns the same day. The process is quite amazing!

Hope this puts your mind at rest.

I have turned 40 and need to do something about my smile

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

I’ve recently turned 40 – yuk – and decided to do something about my smile. I have a crown on the tooth next to my upper canine which is now more yellow than white and two veneers on the bottom front centre teeth which “wrap” over the top of the teeth to make them slightly longer, similarly they are slightly discoloured. I have previously whitened my teeth which looked wonderful except for the crown and veneers! I have since then tried to “top up” the effect because I am a smoker and drink a lot of tea and over the years my teeth have lost the whiteness again.

I was told to re-do the home whitening and did so – this time I developed some white spots on two teeth, a recent visit to a different dentist revealed that the home system I was using is fairly ineffectual and old technology – I had to use it overnight and my teeth had become sensitized. I am now using the home system by Zoom called “Day White” at a 9.5% strength for an hour a day to try and restore the former whiteness.

My two top centre teeth have had composite work done to fill an existing gap when I was 20 and the mid-line is slightly off. I would like a brighter smile and whiter teeth and after much research believe that veneers are the best way to achieve this (obviously I also need to replace the existing crown). I’ve been interested to read about your “one-day” onsite smile makeover and although I can see the benefit in having an onsite technician who can exactly match the veneers to the patient, am interested to know whether veneers created in this way are as good, quality and durability wise, as the more usual veneers one has to wait a number of weeks for. I was recently told that German and American labs produce far better quality – is this true? L

A. Hi L,

many thanks for your enquiry, ok lets tackle each concern separately.

teeth whitening“>Teeth whitening is very dependent upon the concentration of the solution used and how long you have the solution on your teeth. Also new research suggests that the type of whitening trays have a part to play on how well the treatment works. So to summarise the longer you have the solution on your teeth everyday and the more often you use the whitening treatment ie 1 daily to twice daily you will see better and better result. So perseverance is the best advise. The best home treatment on the market is however a system which encompasses all these variables to produce a excellent result called enlighten. Also while this treatment is being done try to avoid smoking and drinking and eating foods of high colour.

Veneers are a very good option in correcting things like poor colour, shape, contour and midline correction of teeth. There are many types of veneers on the market and the basic things to understand are that some veneers are built up by adding porcelain firing it then adding some more and firing it until the final produce is produced (time consuming). The second way is a pressed veneer which is built up in wax first then the wax replica is made into porcelain by a pressing process(empress veneers) this produces a very consistent result and due to the core porcelain colours being limited can be reproduced much easier, then there is milled porcelain veneers (CEREC), which is ground from a single block of porcelain. All these veneers in the hands of the right technician can produce beautiful results and equally all these three types of veneers should last equally well.

There are good and bad technicians in all countries. I use a fantastic technician in the UK from a dental laboratory called ART, Gary Jenkinson, who produces work which is second to none, so it’s all a matter of having the right team and the technician being willing to learn.

Hope all this information is helpful

What are the best veneers lumineers, cerec, J.Kim ?

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Q. Having just had a quote from my dentist in Liverpool I felt more like I was being sold double glazing the way in which the price changed. I already have a now dated bridge in place of 3 teeth + 3 crowns + am looking to have veneers over my ten top teeth. I think I also need gum reshaping + obviously whitening of bottom teeth. My dentist recommended J. Kim veneers and said they were by far the best, but going on various websites everyone says differently some saying lumineers, cerec etc. Some even say they will do the whole process in one day, is this advisable and what veneers do you recommend? I would prefer to travel a bit to find someone who I could trust, do you do free consultations in Birmingham or if not is there someone who you could recommend. I do hope you can help, A

A. Dear A,

I am sorry to hear about your problems finding a solution to your problems. As you are considering having a considerable amount of cosmetic work done, you are a very attractive patient to any dental practice. Most dental practices, ourselves included, would be happy to offer you a free consultation.

Regarding the best veneer system to use, I believe that a lot depends on what the dentist & producing laboratory are used to using. The next consideration is what the veneers are trying to do, correcting crooked teeth, masking discolouration or general tidy up . the subtle differences between systems will affect what is best for you I use two systems routinely . The final restorations of one day veneers are unlikely to be aesthetically superior than rivals, however there is a market for such products if time is limited.

Should you wish to visit the Bennett’s Hill Practice we would be happy to discuss what your dental work might involve without high pressure sales or double glazing. We are two minutes walk from New Street Station if you are traveling in by main line rail, alternatively any of the city centre car parks are fine if you travel by car.

Please feel free to phone on 0121 643 0610 if you would like to talk over your case further.

Regards Rob.
