With a root canal already done can I have veneer on the same tooth?

Thursday, November 26th, 2009
Q. I had a root canal done on a front tooth. will a labial veneer(laminate)-chairsd be ok to put on the tooth?

A. Yes provided the tooth has not got large fillings in it.  If it has a crown would be the better option

Anxious to know exact condition of my teeth and treatment.

Thursday, November 26th, 2009
Q. I have quite a complex dental history and received 10 years of orthodontist care…. I had two operations when I was younger as I had an extra set of front teeth that were blocking the other set coming through. I had chains attached to my front teeth while they were still in the gums (am sure there’s a dental term for this!) and they were gradually pulled down with a brace. I didn’t get my front teeth properly until I was 17 and was brace free from 18, wearing a night retainer until I was 19-20. I had root canal treatment on my right front tooth approximately 18 months ago and then a replacement root canal 12 months ago…. through the NHS I requested to go back and see my old orthodontist at the dental hospital as I was concerned about the movement in my front teeth and how it had become discoloured. And I was unhappy with my NHS dentist… These are some of the comments made by my orthodontist in his letter to my regular dentist… I have: – a mild anterior open bite – somewhat spaced malocclusion – a mildly rotated left maxillary central incisor – a discoloured right central incisor I was discharged by my orthodontist but he is happy to see me again, and he has offered to correct the anterior and buccal spacing if this is something I wanted to persue. … and my gums are now receeding! My right front tooth has recently been causing me pain again and I am due to see my NHS dentist late december. At the last root canal treatment I had on my front tooth I also had it whitened but it has returned to its previous discoloured state. I have been thinking about veneers for a long time as I dislike the discolouring, wonky teeth and spaces BUT I’m a little bit clueless as to what would be the best option for me…. It is my two front teeth that concern me most, the discolouring and spacing. Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated.

A. If the roots are stable then veneers would be a quick option to straighten the teeth and improve there colour.

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
Q. Hi There, I have a veneer for my front tooth but not for the others and its gone slightly discoloured would I need a new veneer or could I just get whitening also I really want a white gold window as one of my teeth is slight chipped I dont want a full tooth just the outline one can you help at all?

A. You may be able to bleach the tooth but it is probable that a new veneer will be needed – you need to visit your dentist to check that the tooth is not  infected

Suggest me on getting perfectly straight teeth

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
Q. Hi Doctor, A few years ago I had a ostiotomy on my lower jaw bring the jaw fowards so my lower front teeth were up against my upper front teeth which gave a much better side on profile and better smile. However, this has resulted in my lower front teeth being rather prominent and so I am contemplating adding veneer to the upper front teeth to compensate because I don’t think they are long enough. How do you decide how long front teeth should be in comparison with lower ones ? I know each case is different but my upper front teeth are not perfectly straight so I don’t want to make a big mistake. Advice would be welcome..

A. It really depends on how much of your upper teeth you show at rest and when you smile.  You may need veneers but you may be able to have a quick fix with braces fixed to the inside of your teeth.  Please contact my surgery for a consultation

Can I have root filling after veneer?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
Q. Hi, I have a front tooth whith veneer and it started feeling a bit tender and painful for a couple of months, my dentist is suggesting a root filling but being one of my front teeth I am very worried if it tuns out okay without any visible damage afterwards. The pain is not severe and is acutally bearable but feels tender. My dentist also says it might fall out at some point which is devastating for me. Can you please advise if I should get the root filling done and if there is any way to save the tooth.

A. It sounds as though you need to have the root treatment – I would follow the advice of your dentist

Between Emax & Empress II which has better features?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
Q. Dear Dr Caplan. What are the difference between Emax veneers and Empress II veneers. Are the emax porcelain veneers more beautiful, thinest and strongest that the old well known Empress II porcelain? Thanks

A. They are 2 types of porcelain.  Emax is made from Lithium Disilicate and is about 3 times stronger than Empress which is made our of feldspathic reenforced with leucite

Thumb sucking as a kid has caused problem to my front teeth

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
Q. When i was a child i sucked my thumb and now my front teeth are goofy and my bottom front are leaning back, i had a retainer to stop the thumb sucking 9 years ago and was told i did not need a brace as they would go back naturally. in my opinion they are now worse, i do not want braces now as i have self-esteem issues, what other options do i have?

A. It will be very difficult to treat without a brace, but you could consider veneers to make the teeth appear to be straight, this will entail some trimming of the front teeth.

Your advice to fix the problems going on in my mouth?

Friday, November 20th, 2009
Q. I have a lot of problems going on in my mouth. First off I have a gap becaue I am missing my two teeth on either side next to my canine. My canine’s have moved in the place where those two teeth should have been. Apperently I was not born with them. Near my canine tooth is my old baby canine tooth that never fell whch is loose on the left side. Then on my bottom right I had a tooth removed because it was cracked. What is your advice to fix my teeth?

A. A combination of veneers and implants works well for this type of treatment. If you would like me to take a look for you please call the practice on 01245 268 494

Relatively large front teeth needs treatment

Friday, November 20th, 2009
Q. I have two large front teeth and absolutely detest them. its giving me really low self esteem and i would really like to do something about them. What are my options and honestly how much will this kind of treatment cost? My two front teeth are longer than my “wedding finger nail” (short) just to give you a rough idea. im getting increasingly depressed about it what can i do?

A. The cost depends on what you have done. If they need veneers this will  normally cost from around £500 per tooth. If the teeth need removal then you could be looking at £500 for a small denture or £4000 for fixed implant supported crowns.

Crooked teeth needs veneers are there any other options?

Friday, November 20th, 2009
Q. Hi Kailesh I was wondering what you can do for people with croked teeth, ar veneers still an option. My 2 front teeth ar slightly further foward than the ones either side? I look forward to hearing from you.

A.

Hi
Many thanks for your question. There are usually several options for correcting tooth position and alignment. Veneers are an option especially if you are also unhappy with the shape and colour of the teeth, however this treatment usually involves removing a small amount of healthy tooth. Other options include  6 month smiles, inman aligner, and invisalign. these would all reposition the teeth but not change the shape or colour.
I hope this helps

Is root canal required before having a crown in my case

Thursday, November 12th, 2009
Q. I asked my doctor to give me a nice smile or correct spaced teeth in the front of my mouth and he is giving me a crown and root canal on the damaged tooth first, but what about the other teeth in the front they are still spaced will i need a root canal on the other teeth in order to get them unspaced and looking nice?

A. It is difficult for me to say without seeing you, all I would say is that you don’t always need root canal before  crown or veneer is fitted

What are the treatments for removing and replacing a tooth?

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009
Q. I have 2 front fang teeth at the front left and right my question is can they be removed and replace somehow

A. Thanks for your question, if it is the appearance of these teeth that you dislike, you may wish to consider veneers. This would not involve removing the teeth, but using a veneer would allow you to change the shape and aesthetic apperance of the tooth, to create a more uniform smile. Alternatively, if there are clinical reasons to warant loosing the teeth, you could have implants placed to fill the gaps. I hope this helps.
Kind regards

Cost to fix uneven teeth and also to whiten them?

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009
Q. I am 46 year old and have alway hated my uneven teeth. I hate having my photo taken and I have wanted to have vaneers on them for years. I think that i need at least eight and teeth whitening to make them look better. Can you tell me how much this procedure would cost. Thank you

A. It dependson how crooked your teeth I often carry out some short term straightening of your teeth first and would then place veneers as this minimises the removal of your natural teeth.  You need to find a good cosmetic dentist and have an assessment.

Rebonding and teeth whitening was not done as expected

Monday, November 9th, 2009
Q. I very recently attempted at a local dentists office to have my canine tooth (which had bonding on it) re-bonded. I wanted it to be a solid color and shaped appropriately without harming my gum. The dentist was highly unsuccessful. The bonding looks varigated (two colors) and was either too large (looked like a dog tooth) and now too small/short. Question: should it not be simple to mix a color to match the tooth and not be varigated? Also, I had one hour whitening done and it didn’t really whiten my teeth very well. It has been less than two weeks and what whitening occurred is going away quickly. I asked if I had enough enamel for the treatment (I am 51) and did not get a reply. Any suggestions on how to get my teeth very white and a my canine to match? I do take good care of my teeth, brush, floss, etc daily FYI. Thank you!

A.

Start with sudy casts of your teeth then modify the cast to the shape that you want balanced with potential conflicts in the Occlusion / bite. Then veneer the teeth with an opaque ( normally Porcelain) Veneer. AN assesment is needed to find out if a single veneer or the visible smile (?? 8 teeth) is needed.
