My sons upper canine teeth fell off 8 months ago but still there is no sign of teeth eruption

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Q. my son is 6 years and 9 months old .his upper canine teeths fell off 8 months ago .still there is no sign of teeth eruption .wondering if anything needs to be done.lower canines fell after upper ones and they erupted completely. he was a thumbsucker .

A. He is still young for his canine teeth to be coming out they normally erupt around the age of 9.  If you are concerned ask your dentist to take an x-ray to assess that all the teeth are present and developing normally.

Our dentist has removed a healthy canine tooth from my 12 year old son can anything be done

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Q. I was horrified to find that our dentist removed a healthy canine tooth from my 12 year old son. He assured my husband that, although healthy, the tooth was a baby tooth, which was preventing the adult canine pushing through. However, the tooth pulled out was a second tooth and matched the second canine on the other side. The tooth pushing through is a large molar and I am seriously concerned that my son will now be left with a lopsided smile. Can anything be done to correct this error without resorting to implant.

A. I doubt very much that the dentist would have made such an error, go back to him and discuss your feelings I’m sure there has been a break down in communication somewhere along the line.

unless there is some confusion most people have canines , followed by premolars then molars .
if you have no premolars there may be some cosmetic options but without seeing you it is hard to advise

MY DENTIST WANTS TO PULL MY 2 TOP CANINE TEETH BEFORE I GET BRACES IS THAT OK

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Q. MY DENTIST WANTS TO PULL MY 2 TOP CANINE TEETH BEFORE I GET BRACES IS THAT OK I ALWAYS HEARD YOU SHOULDNT HAVE THEM PULLED THEY ARE THE TEETH THAT KEEP YOUR FACE OVAL AND NOT TO SINK IN. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME?

A. It is difficult to give you an answer without seeing you but I would personally not like to have canine teeth removed I feel they are one of the most important teeth in your mouth.  I have re treated several people of the years who had canines removed and the re-treatment is very difficult and prolonged.  You should ask your dentist why those teeth are being removed and ask for more options. If you would like you can send me a photo and I could try to give you some possible options.

after a smile makeover will my mouth look smaller than it does now

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Q. hello , I have a question about a smile makeover. I have the dracula teeth(on my upper jaw) sticking out and they make it difficult for me to shut my mouth after smiling because the ends of my mouth don’t shut especially when my dracula teeth are dry. So I am thinking of having this procedure but one thing still bugs me. If my dracula teeth get fixed , and they get pushed back, will my mouth look smaller than it does now? If so, is there any way to have my teeth fixed without this side effect? Thank you. I am looking forward to your reply.

A. I would really need to see you to give you the best options.  I believe you are referring to your canine teeth which stick out.  You might find orthodontics to straighten your teeth is a better option or sometimes a combination whereby your teeth are straightened first then have some cosmetic work to finish your smile.  Before carrying out a smile makeover I often overlay some tooth coloured material over my patients teeth so we can get a quick preview of how the teeth will look at then end. You could ask your dentist to do the same so you can see how you would look.  I am sure there are a few different options available.  You can send me a photo if you would like a more detailed opinion.

Both of my upper canine teeth are not straight

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Q. Both of my upper canine teeth are not straight, I am looking into having cosmetic surgery and was wondering what the best solution would be? I am very conscious of them so feel that wearing a brace would not be a method for me, also with the rest of my teeth being straight i am not sure it would be needed?

A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, if you are not prepared o wear braces the best option would be to veneer the canine teeth to give the illusion of them being straight. hope this is helpful.

my daughter has been wearing a brace for two years

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Q. Please can you give me some advice. My daughter, who will be 14 next month, has been wearing a brace (she calls a train track) for the past two years on her top teeth only. We went today to have a new retainer fitted. The brace was removed last month. At the beginning of her treatment, our orthodontist explained that he was going to fit a brace because her teeth were severely sticking out. The teeth affected were the second of her front four teeth (one on each side) and they protruded over her lip when she closed her mouth (like a vampire). However, the rest of her front teeth were still milk teeth apart from these front four. He said it was unusual for him to fit a brace to milk teeth but because my daughter was conscious of how her teeth looked he was happy for her to have the brace now. During out appointment today, our orthodontist seemed alarmed. He took an x-ray which revealed that my daughter has two teeth (one of which looked almost adult in size) growing horizontally towards each other in her gums above her front four teeth (one on each side). The orthodontist said these should have come down somewhere near the sides of her mouth (though I cannot see any room left where this teeth would have come down). He has asked us to come back tomorrow and said that we will need to see a consultant at a hospital. We are very worried. 1) Could this be due to the fact that the brace was fitted to milk teeth? 2) Should the orthodontist have picked this up earlier during our two years of treatment? 3) What should we expect to happen next? Thank you in advance for your advice.

A. The fact that your daughter has horizantally impacted teeth is probably nothing to with the braces. This is just they way they have formed. When you go to the hospital the consultant may try to expose the teeth and add brackets to them to move them down into the correct position. I am guessing that the teeth are the canines which are vital to the on going health of the functioning system. The hospital will do the best thing for your daughter and your orthodontist is doing the right thing by refereing her to the hospital. The teeth may have shown up x-rays that were previously taken but you have to ask your dentist to show you them so that you can look for yourself. If it had been picked up earlier, there was probably nothing that could be done at this age
I hope this helps

I would like to have permanent caps put on all four canine teeth

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Q. I would like to have permanent caps put on all four canine teeth that are like vampire teeth basically they need to be able to be eaten with etc. Do you know anyone who would be able to do this and how much it would cost?

A. Hi

A consultation with dentist would be required to see if this is possible. Good quality crowns start from £450 upwards.

can I have crowns put over my canine teeth to make them longer

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Q. i have done research and would like an experts view on this. would it be possible for me to have crowns put over my canine teeth to make them longer? nothing absurd or too big , something that isnt immediatly noticeable. if so how much would it cost and where could it be done? thank you

A. Crowns are possible on all teeth, however it depends on the previous treatment and fillings on the teeth.

If there are no previous fillings and you wish you have the appearance modified you would have options of veneers and crowns.

Cost range is between £400 – £600 per tooth depending on the cosmetic requirements.

my third tooth is twisted

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Q. Hi I was hoping you could give me an idea of what the best way of sorting out my smile would be and maybe a rough idea of how much it would cost. When i was younger my third tooth i think its called the canine grew twisted and closer to the front than it should have because of this my second tooth never grew so now i have one tooth in the middle of where two teeth should be with gaps on both sides. i don’t mind if my rogue tooth needed to be removed for the best results. But i would like to be able to smile properly as quickly and cheaply as possible as it is really beginning to get me down. Thank you in advance for your help & advice I look forward to hearing from you.

A.

Check out some dentists in your area that offer a free initial consultation, You should be able to get some rough prices for veneers, bridges, cosmetic bonding, or orthodontics (braces ) then balance the cost with the speed and the “smile” result.
Cheap & fast but ? result in your case would be cosmetic bonding.

I am 23 years old my teeth have started rotting

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Q. I am 23 years old. I have had 3 children, and during my pregnancies my teeth started rotting, so me being pregnant, thinking I could not help. I did not go. I stopped brushing my teeth for awhile because they would hurt, my gums would be very tender and bleed (they still do). I try to brush my teeth now and I still have the same problem. I have a lot of holes, a missing k-9 tooth, a couple of rotting wisdom teeth, missing moullers. It hurts sometimes no matter what I eat. It seems as though when I chew my teeth are going to just break. I’m so afraid of losing my teeth but I’m afraid of pain and I don’t like to hear my teeth being pulled out, that sounds awful. I know I should go see a dentist and I really want to, but money is always an issue. My credit is awful but I need help so bad. My mouth is falling apart and I’m so sad about this that it almost makes me feel depressed and I don’t like to smile or even open my mouth. I don’t even like to kiss anymore!! :( please help do I still have a chance?

A. If your youngest child is less than 1 year old you automatically get free NHS dental treatment. If your child is over 1 year you may still get free treatment on income / benefit grounds. To find an NHS dentist consult NHS direct by phone or internet, if you do pay charges the most it can be for a full course of treatment is £198.
It is important that you continue to make the moves back to getting your teeth / smile / confidence back.  Don’t give up or ignore it.

I had to go to the dentist to have my left upper baby canine tooth removed

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Q. Here’s the problem. When I was 14 I had to go to the dentist to have my left upper baby canine tooth removed because it wouldnt’ come loose and the adult tooth was growing in behind it. This didn’t correct the problem because my adult tooth was almost all the way in. All my other teeth are in perfect position. It’s just this one tooth that is out of line. Instead of going over my bottom canine tooth my upper one goes behind it. It’s like it grew in at the perfect angle because it doesn’t cause any of my other teeth to crossbite at all. So what I’m wondering is, do I have to get this Canine tooth pulled and have an implant put in or are there other means by which this tooth can be put in it’s correct positioning? I can send you pictures if need be. Thanks so much for your insight!

A. Hi I think you have 3 options to correct its position depending on the severity of the problem:
1. remove the tooth and re-position with an implant
2. Move the tooth with a brace
3.Place a veneer to make the tooth appear in line

If you would like to send me  a picture I would be glad to look at it enquiry@advancedentalclinic.com

I’m 21 years old and I definitely dont want any braces

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Q. Hey, I’m 21 years old and I definitely dont want any braces. But, I have this one tooth between my incisor and canine which is completely crooked. It looks like I have a gap in my top half set, and then when you look close enough there is a tooth sitting at a 45 degree angle between two other teeth. Do you think if I had my widsom tooth in the top right corner of my mouth removed, my crooked tooth would straighten up? And if so, how long would it take? Thanks

A. It is very difficult to give you an answer without seeing you.  It is highly unlikely removal of a wisdom tooth would cause your teeth to straighten naturally.  Orthodontics can now be done in a number of ways and is probably the best way to straighten your teeth.

hi hows it going ive really got a phobia about going to a dentist

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Q. hi hows it going ive really got a phobia about going to a dentist which has led to me neglecting my teeth so my front teeth have some tartar stains on the 2 front teeth and on one of my fangs and a few cavitys on my front and back teeth and one of my front tooth has crackec completely in half and is hanging on by the front surface of the enamel even tho there isnt much of that left.I got an appointment to see my new nhs dentist in a few weeks times and ive been reading up about what procedures they would use for this kind of treatment and it says the composite filling will match my natural teeth color and that is what has kind of confused me as i have abit of tartar stains and my 2 front teeth have discolored quite a bit to a light brown (due to i drink a lot of teas) and i was wondering if the composite filling would match the tea stained teeth or the colour of my teeth before they became discolored and stained or is there another procedure they do to restore a brighter whiter smile and by the way im going for free nhs dental treatment. thanks alot cant wait for your reply

A. Hi

If you are nervous about dental treatment, there are a number of ways this can be managed

1. distraction techniques
2. listening to music from an ipod
3. hypnosis
4. iv sedation or oral sedation
etc

White fillings can make teeth look cosmetically better if properly done.

I have a gap between my front incisor

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Q. Hi, I have a gap between my front incisor and the next tooth (can’t think what that one is called) i would like this gap closed, but have been told that i would have to have all of my teeth shaved down from canine to canine just to close this gap! Is there anything else that could be done? I don’t really want to destroy perfectly healthy teeth. My teeth really bother me and I am looking to have the work done ASAP. I look forward to your response. Regards

A. hi, many thanks for your enquiry, there are many options to close gaps, one of these options are veneers which is what you have described but other options are much less aggressive. the best thing would be to seek a cosmetic dentist like myself to help in discussing all the options and hopefully we can find a solution to your problem. i will arrange for a member of my team to call you to book this appointment.
