My teeth are crooked can anything be done to my incisors or canines.

Friday, August 21st, 2009
Q. When i was 11 i had a brace, it was,to pull my 4 top incisors out as they were not curved, but straight, making my canines look like fangs. This was a removable brace, with an extra piece at night that went round my head.Anyway, it didnt work and nothing else was done, i dont know why. It has bothered me ever since. i am almost 40 now, and i put my hand over my mouth when i laugh and try not to show my teeth. Can anything be done, either to my incisors or canines..ie filing them as they look longer than my insisors, making it look worse. Thank you for your time.

A. Veneers can be used to reshape teeth after grinding down. guide price $350-700 per tooth. often the front six teeth are done as group so you may multiply by 6 or 10. Rob

Is it possible to reshape my canines and what would be the cost of it?

Friday, August 21st, 2009
Q. Having posted with a question earlier about a visalign brace, ive done a bit of internet searching, i thing reshaping of my canines would be an option, to make my “fangs” less obvious. Can you tell me the cost and if its possible, and do you offer it at you surgery ?

A. We mainly use the clearstep system which we would be happy to discuss with you. there are several other clear positioners available. for an free informal chat call 01216430610 for an appointment Rob

My 8 year old has lost a baby tooth and still no sign of a new one should I be worried

Saturday, August 8th, 2009
Q. Hi my 8 year old son lost a baby tooth 12 months(canine) ago there is still no sign of a new one coming through and the gap between his two front teeth seems to be getting bigger. how long does it take for second teeth to come through? should i be worried?

A. No don’t be worried the permanent canon etooth usually erupts aged 10 but the baby tooth can fall out earlier. The gap will be a good amount of space for the eruption of the final bigger new teeth that come through at the back and push the front teeth together,

Ive been told i need get my canines removed and after 6 months get the implant is it correct?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009
Q. Hi I have gum recession and due to a prior orthodontic surgery (in which the roots of my 2 canines were cut off) my canines are loose. I have been told that I should get these removed, have gum grafting and also some bone grafting above the canines then after 6 months get the implants put in (will have a false tooth plate in mean time). My periodontist assures me that with this treatment I should get my smile back and the implants will last as long as a regular tooth. My query is how much would this cost in UK (i am an expat overseas and have been quoted £8000 for the above) but I am from Uk and will be returning shortly I would get alloplastic grafting here but have been told auto is the way to go is this true? Is the 6 months necessary?

A. Your own bone would produce the best results and after all that you have been through it shouldn’t be too much in addition. The six months is generally a good idea for predictability, grafts and implants can be placed simultaneously but it is higher risk because if the graft fails the situation less favourable if a second procedure is required.
Costs for grafting are variable and only accurate after a full case assesment

My upper canine teeth are irregularly large as well as out in place would veneers correct it?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009
Q. I am considering cosmetic dentistry to correct some of the problems I see in the mirror. The main problem, and question, is about my upper canine teeth. They both seem irregularly large as well as out of place. The gum line is especially high with these teeth, and they are both a bit crooked. I don’t particularly want to undergo two years of braces like my siblings have. Would veneers correct a problem like this?

A. Veneers could correct this but if the canines are already pushed out of position then the tooth removal necessary for the veneers would need to be aggressive possibly running the risk of root canal

Braces would be the least invasive option but obviously takes the longest time

My adult canines are squint and pointing at top front teeth is this a serious problem?

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009
Q. Hi, I’m 15 years old and still have my top baby canines. Having recently been to the dentist, i was giving an X-ray to locate the adult canines. After looking at the X-ray we discovered that my adult canines are extremely squint and are pointing in the direction of my top front teeth. My dentist is reffering me to the Orthodontist to see what can be done about this. I was just wondering how serious this is, and how they would be planning to fix the problem? Could my dentist have stopped this happening by removing the baby canines before now?

A. The best thing would be to expose the canines and pull them into the arch with a brace, your orthodontit can arrange this

Ive a protruding canine and the tooth next to it is set back what would you recommend to fix

Thursday, July 9th, 2009
Q. Hi Dr Caplan. I have a protruding canine and the tooth next to it is set back, accentuating it. I’m unsure which treatment is best as I would prefer not to have orthodontics mainly due to cost. What would you recommend?

A. Definitely ortho would be my first choice – and this is likely to be cheaper than the other restorative options

My sons upper canine teeth fell off 8 months ago but still there is no sign of teeth eruption

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009
Q. My son is 6 years and 9 months old .his upper canine teeths fell off 8 months ago .still there is no sign of teeth eruption .wondering if anything needs to be done.lower canines fell after upper ones and they erupted completely. he was a thumbsucker .

A. He is still young for his canine teeth to be coming out they normally erupt around the age of 9.  If you are concerned ask your dentist to take an x-ray to assess that all the teeth are present and developing normally.

Our dentist has removed a healthy canine tooth from my 12 year old son can anything be done

Sunday, June 28th, 2009
Q. I was horrified to find that our dentist removed a healthy canine tooth from my 12 year old son. He assured my husband that, although healthy, the tooth was a baby tooth, which was preventing the adult canine pushing through. However, the tooth pulled out was a second tooth and matched the second canine on the other side. The tooth pushing through is a large molar and I am seriously concerned that my son will now be left with a lopsided smile. Can anything be done to correct this error without resorting to implant.

A. I doubt very much that the dentist would have made such an error, go back to him and discuss your feelings I’m sure there has been a break down in communication somewhere along the line.

A. Hi
unless there is some confusion most people have canines , followed by premolars then molars .
if you have no premolars there may be some cosmetic options but without seeing you it is hard to advise

sorry

MY DENTIST WANTS TO PULL MY 2 TOP CANINE TEETH BEFORE I GET BRACES IS THAT OK

Friday, April 3rd, 2009
Q. MY DENTIST WANTS TO PULL MY 2 TOP CANINE TEETH BEFORE I GET BRACES IS THAT OK I ALWAYS HEARD YOU SHOULDNT HAVE THEM PULLED THEY ARE THE TEETH THAT KEEP YOUR FACE OVAL AND NOT TO SINK IN. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME?

A. It is difficult to give you an answer without seeing you but I would personally not like to have canine teeth removed I feel they are one of the most important teeth in your mouth.  I have re treated several people of the years who had canines removed and the re-treatment is very difficult and prolonged.  You should ask your dentist why those teeth are being removed and ask for more options. If you would like you can send me a photo and I could try to give you some possible options.

Both of my upper canine teeth are not straight

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009
Q. Both of my upper canine teeth are not straight, I am looking into having cosmetic surgery and was wondering what the best solution would be? I am very conscious of them so feel that wearing a brace would not be a method for me, also with the rest of my teeth being straight i am not sure it would be needed?

A. Hi many thanks for your enquiry, if you are not prepared o wear braces the best option would be to veneer the canine teeth to give the illusion of them being straight. hope this is helpful.

I would like to have permanent caps put on all four canine teeth

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009
Q. I would like to have permanent caps put on all four canine teeth that are like vampire teeth basically they need to be able to be eaten with etc. Do you know anyone who would be able to do this and how much it would cost?

A. Hi

A consultation with dentist would be required to see if this is possible. Good quality crowns start from £450 upwards.

can I have crowns put over my canine teeth to make them longer

Friday, January 9th, 2009
Q. I have done research and would like an experts view on this. would it be possible for me to have crowns put over my canine teeth to make them longer? nothing absurd or too big , something that isnt immediatly noticeable. if so how much would it cost and where could it be done? thank you

A. Crowns are possible on all teeth, however it depends on the previous treatment and fillings on the teeth.

If there are no previous fillings and you wish you have the appearance modified you would have options of veneers and crowns.

Cost range is between £400 – £600 per tooth depending on the cosmetic requirements.

I am 23 years old my teeth have started rotting

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008
Q. I am 23 years old. I have had 3 children, and during my pregnancies my teeth started rotting, so me being pregnant, thinking I could not help. I did not go. I stopped brushing my teeth for awhile because they would hurt, my gums would be very tender and bleed (they still do). I try to brush my teeth now and I still have the same problem. I have a lot of holes, a missing k-9 tooth, a couple of rotting wisdom teeth, missing moullers. It hurts sometimes no matter what I eat. It seems as though when I chew my teeth are going to just break. I’m so afraid of losing my teeth but I’m afraid of pain and I don’t like to hear my teeth being pulled out, that sounds awful. I know I should go see a dentist and I really want to, but money is always an issue. My credit is awful but I need help so bad. My mouth is falling apart and I’m so sad about this that it almost makes me feel depressed and I don’t like to smile or even open my mouth. I don’t even like to kiss anymore!! :( please help do I still have a chance?

A. If your youngest child is less than 1 year old you automatically get free NHS dental treatment. If your child is over 1 year you may still get free treatment on income / benefit grounds. To find an NHS dentist consult NHS direct by phone or internet, if you do pay charges the most it can be for a full course of treatment is £198.
It is important that you continue to make the moves back to getting your teeth / smile / confidence back.  Don’t give up or ignore it.
