I hv receeding gums around my teeth Plz help

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. pls help im very worried, just got back from my nhs dentist my gums have started to pull away from some teeth, my dentist said this is due to my age, but im only 27, in the past i did brush to hard, my biggist mistake, i have booked an apoinment at red sky dental spar this is a cosmetic dentist, could they help me to retore my gums around some teeth that have reseeded thanks

A. hi msny thanks for your enquiry, firstly if your gums have receeded around some teeth this can be caused by a number of factors: hard brushing, grinding teeth, stress, gum disease, poor oral hygiene, hereditary. My advice would be to seek a consultation with a periodontist who is more qualified to discuss your recession and also give you some predictable solutions. Red Sky Dental are a good cosmetic practice however have no speciality in periodontics.

Could you suggest some options to prevent my teeth going yellowish?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. HELLO DR MOORE, I AM A 40 YR OLD FEMALE I DO NOT SMOKE, DONT DRINK RED WINE OR COFFE. BRUSH MT TEETH TWICE A DAY AND FLOSS BUT MY TEETH HAVE STARTED TO GO OFF COLOUR (YELLOWISH). IS THIS PURELY AN AGE THING. I AM SCARED OF BLEACHING AS I DONT WANT MY TEETH TO GET SENSITIVE. I HAVE HAD SO MANY PROBS THIS YEAR WITH MY BACK MOLAR (TOOTH WAS DYING). I VALUE YOUR THOUGHT.

A. Bleaching can cause some transient sensitivity but on the whole is a very good way to improve the colour of the teeth with a minimum of fuss and expense

Is brushing the teeth after vomiting harmful?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. I had a person on an ed website ask if brushing your teeth after purging (vomiting) is harmfull to your teeth. Is it or is that a myth?

A. Yes it is harmful to your teeth. This is because with are bringing up acids when vomiting and if you brush your teeth straight after this, this is very abrasive to your teeth.

Is the soring of pink tissue after having braces considered normal?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Q. My 12 year old son has had braces about two months and he just got bands crisscrossed on the front top teeth to close a gap. The teeth have come together rather quickly but should they be closing on the pink piece of tissue that was between his teeth. It is very sore and puffy. And noticeable! His ortho told him to use baking soda and peroxide with a rubber tip to help push the tissue upwards out of the way. How can his teeth close with tissue in between? So far the pink flesh has not budged. Is this a normal process?

A. The tissue can be compressed and re shapes over time do not worry that is correct, just make sure he keeps his teeth as clean as possible.

My mouth looks like a sharp mouth can you advice me a fix?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Q. Hi there… I wasnt sure who of the experts to put this question to… so i chose at random! I am deeply shocked to discover that despite regularly visiting a dentist for the last 5 years who never mentioned my gums – I have severe periodontal disease. Although i brushed and flossed regularly i never looked closely into my mouth and assumed the shifting teeth were merely getting overcrowded by my wisdom. Now I have moved to a new dentist and have been informed I have ‘massive’ bone loss and had a proper look at my now twisted bottom teeth which look twice as long as they should. It looks and feels terrible. uncomfortable. and the wider health implications! two curettage have done a lot to improve the health of my gums and my periodontist – i go to Poland because i cannot afford the uk at present says she is much more optimistic about the future of my teeth than she was at first, she was shocked. i am only 35. I understand that slowing and stopping the disease is my priorit of course. however i wonder IF and when this is achieved… if anthing can be done to improve the discomfort and the cosmetic appearance with gum grafting and bone etc… i have tried to research and get confusing information which says different things.. also the different dentists i have seen have been vague and contradictory to each other. any advice you may be able to give on this matter would be greatly appreciated. my mouth looks like a sharks mouth.. must it stay this way forever? many thanks

A. You need to find a good dentist who ca put you at ease and look at everything that is going on your teeth and bone levels need be assessed  Sometimes the gum health can be improved if not implants are a great option.  There is no real cure for periodontal disease which makes it very frustrating.

Why is there dark staining on teeth inspite of adhering to oral hygiene standards?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Q. Since moving back to New Zealand 2 years ago I now suffer from dark staining on my teeth.I have not drunk tea or coffee for over 25 years , no red wine either.I do drink cammomile or peppermint tea. I use a good electric tooth brush & brush for over 2 mins twice per day & floss at night, my husband can attest to my oral hygeine standards, I used to nurse in the dental department of my training hospital.I am dairy & gluten free. Could it be something in our water? We have filtered on the fridge but not for the kettle on the main tap? We only used filtered water in the UK . Your advice would be appreciated as my dentist is at aloss to the cause, I see him every six months and the problem is getting worse between visits. With kind regards

A. Hi

Very strange. It is very difficult to give you an answer in thsi case without carrying out an examination. I would recommend you see also a a hugienist to remove the staining and see if this helps.

How to treat gum shrinkage for a smoker?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Q. Hi, i am a smoker and i have one tooth my front canine which has gum shrinkage has been for a long while, and is now becoming sore and bleeds when i clean my teeth, please could you tell me what it could be.. Many Thanks

A.

This means that the area needs particular attention when brushing and flossing and that you should book in to see a hygienist to help maintain your teeth and gums. This is doubly necessary for a smoker.

What are the options for oral hygiene?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Q. am only 17 and i hate my teeth i have a gum diease and the front 2 bottom teeth are fake. i really want something done i want to knoe what the best option for me is please help.

A.

You gum disease can be treatment easily by booking in with a Hygienist and having a course of treatment with her and then maintaining your oral health by brushing and flossing twice a day and up keeing you hygiene and dental examinations by attending the dentist once every six month.

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your two bottom teeth i am sure that they can be improved. You did not mention what type of restoration you have on the bottom, but a cosmetic dentist can certainly get things looking great for you.

My 3yr old has wobbly front tooth is it too early to lose her tooth?

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Q. Hi Dr. Caplan, my daughter will be 3 in 2 weeks time and she already has a very wobbly front tooth. Is this something I should be worried about, surely she is too young to be losing her first teeth, and should I book a visit to the dentist for her. We do take care of her teeth and they are brushed twice a day so am quite concerned. Many thanks.

A. Please do not be concerned.  Provided she has not hit her mouth the relatively early loss of a tooth is unusual but that is all- the adult tooth underneath is pushing the tooth out. If you are concerned please visit your dentist

Im 23 and am embarrassed with my teeth what can i do?

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Q. Hi Dr Moore Im 23 and am extremely embarrased at the state of my teeth. Toward the back I have lost two on the upper jaw, and have lost part of three teeth on the bottom jaw – presumably from caries. There are also small holes in two of my front teeth near the gumline I feel very nervous at the propect of going to see the dentist because I have neglected my oral healthcare, although I do brush regularly now – I was never really promted to during my childhood. I dont where possible want to have any, or many teeth extracted as I dont discuss my oral health with my partner – again, too embarrased as her teeth are great – she is registered with an NHS dentist wheras I am not and have been reluctant to do so because i feel the way i do. What other options are there to retain as many of my current teeth? i understand without an examination its difficult to say, but from a worst case scenario.. I especially do not want to have to wear dentures, so other options would be essential for this. I have done a bit of research into some of the options, but I thought i would pluck up the courage and speak to someone about it. Many thanks,

A. The first step is to find a dentist who comes recommended perhaps your partners dentist would be a good start. If the teeth are in a very bad state of repair you may need to consider removing teeth and replacing them with fixed bridges or dental implants. Your dentist should be able to advise you on this, if not then maybe ask for a referral to a dentsit with implant experience.

Is it possible to get my gums smaller and my teeth bigger?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Q. i have big gums and small teeth!! its kinda embarrassing. I have braces on right now and my orthodontist said if my gums dont go down then my braces will be taken off. im not sure why? is there a surgery that can take some of my gums off or what? and after that can be braces be back on? ive been on the internet lately and i think i have gum disease although my teeth arent red . i noticed a little red though but they are mostly a purple pinkish color . .but i was wondering is there anyway i can make my gums get smaller and make my teeth bigger? im a 14 year old african american thank you so much!

A. The swelling of the gums is normally caused by poor brushing around the brace. I guess the dentist is worried about the health of the gums. It might be worth using an electric brush if you have problems with a normal tooth brush, either way it sounds like you need to spend much longer cleaning the teeth under the brace to prevent problems in the future

A part of my tooth fall out what should i do to take care of my teeth?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Q. Hello: Thank you in advance for answering my question. I just recently had a part of my tooth fall out. I have no money for insurance but I was thinking about getting some through western dental, if I can get approved. In the meantime what should I do to take care of the rest of my teeth!?! Should I gargle with salt water…….would that even make a difference? Thank you

A. Hi I’m not sure about insurance companies so you need to contact them directly. In the meantime keeping the area clean with brushing, flossing and mouth washing is important. Salt water will be fine or try an antiseptic mouthwash.

Im a mum of 2 children and what flouride levels i should be looking for in their toothpaste

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Q. Hi I am a mum of 2 young children (one 4 years and one 11 months) and am confused about what flouride levels I should be looking for in their toothpaste. The british dental assos website says that children under 3 should be using a toothpaste with 1000ppm of flouride and the over 3 one with between 1350 and 1500ppm however I noticed that the Colgate Smiles product only has 500ppm and other websites say to use a non-flouride product. HELP

A. I think the Colgate Smiles one will be sufficient for both kids until they are 7-8 years old. Then switch to one with a higher flouride content. Don’t forget that the sugar intake is the most important thing regarding dental decay at this early stage of a childs life

I didnt brush for 2 year and now the damage has been done how can i sort it out?

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Q. Hello. Ive had some really bad experiences with dentists in the past. My first dentist a liked to remove teeth for the fun of it (at the age of 5) and it terrified me. As my teeth grew back one of my front teeth started to grow outwards and as a result i had low confidence and couldn’t interact socially. At the age of 14 i went to an NHS dentist who fitted me with braces. I had them for 4 years he seemed to be fixing them but at the age of 18 he just said he wasn’t getting paid any more and thus just removed the brace and that was it. He left me with cement on my teeth and my tooth has come back out again. At the point i just gave in and stopped brushing. Didn’t brush them for 2 years and now the damage has been done. I’m so ashamed of them, i don’t and as a result have lost most of my friends. At this time i am 20 and am just scared to go and see any dentist because i have no trust in them any more. Can you give me any advice or a dentist that could give assurance that me teeth could be nice again. I do have a steady job and will pay anything to get them done, please help its a last resort. I look forward to hearing from you.

A. It seems that it will take some time for you to regain any trust in dentists
