Is there a way of preventing receding gums other than brushing and flossing

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009
Q. Hello! I am 21 years old and I recently had two root canals done on my lower right side(molar and premolar), but due to insurance issues I am waiting until January to get crowns for them. I have realized that my molars on the left side(both top and bottom) look a little worn down on the lingual and buccal side. I believe my dentist has shaved the cusps of the two root canal-ed teeth and this might have messed up my bite(I can’t really feel it while chewing though). I wanted to know if this could be the actual case. I’m worried that my other teeth are going to get really ugly by the time I can get crowns. Also I have realized that teeth with crowns tend to have receding gums. Is there a way to prevent that other than the regular brushing and flossing? Thank you

A. Wear of teeth takes a long to to happen – it is likely that this was there before you had the RCT and that you have become aware of your mouth since

Is it possible to get my gums smaller and my teeth bigger?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009
Q. I have big gums and small teeth!! its kinda embarrassing. I have braces on right now and my orthodontist said if my gums dont go down then my braces will be taken off. im not sure why? is there a surgery that can take some of my gums off or what? and after that can be braces be back on? ive been on the internet lately and i think i have gum disease although my teeth arent red . i noticed a little red though but they are mostly a purple pinkish color . .but i was wondering is there anyway i can make my gums get smaller and make my teeth bigger? im a 14 year old african american thank you so much!

A. The swelling of the gums is normally caused by poor brushing around the brace. I guess the dentist is worried about the health of the gums. It might be worth using an electric brush if you have problems with a normal tooth brush, either way it sounds like you need to spend much longer cleaning the teeth under the brace to prevent problems in the future

A part of my tooth fall out what should i do to take care of my teeth?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009
Q. Hello: Thank you in advance for answering my question. I just recently had a part of my tooth fall out. I have no money for insurance but I was thinking about getting some through western dental, if I can get approved. In the meantime what should I do to take care of the rest of my teeth!?! Should I gargle with salt water…….would that even make a difference? Thank you

A. Hi I’m not sure about insurance companies so you need to contact them directly. In the meantime keeping the area clean with brushing, flossing and mouth washing is important. Salt water will be fine or try an antiseptic mouthwash.

Im a mum of 2 children and what flouride levels i should be looking for in their toothpaste

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009
Q. Hi I am a mum of 2 young children (one 4 years and one 11 months) and am confused about what flouride levels I should be looking for in their toothpaste. The british dental assos website says that children under 3 should be using a toothpaste with 1000ppm of flouride and the over 3 one with between 1350 and 1500ppm however I noticed that the Colgate Smiles product only has 500ppm and other websites say to use a non-flouride product. HELP

A. I think the Colgate Smiles one will be sufficient for both kids until they are 7-8 years old. Then switch to one with a higher flouride content. Don’t forget that the sugar intake is the most important thing regarding dental decay at this early stage of a childs life

I didnt brush for 2 year and now the damage has been done how can i sort it out?

Saturday, July 11th, 2009
Q. Hello. Ive had some really bad experiences with dentists in the past. My first dentist a liked to remove teeth for the fun of it (at the age of 5) and it terrified me. As my teeth grew back one of my front teeth started to grow outwards and as a result i had low confidence and couldn’t interact socially. At the age of 14 i went to an NHS dentist who fitted me with braces. I had them for 4 years he seemed to be fixing them but at the age of 18 he just said he wasn’t getting paid any more and thus just removed the brace and that was it. He left me with cement on my teeth and my tooth has come back out again. At the point i just gave in and stopped brushing. Didn’t brush them for 2 years and now the damage has been done. I’m so ashamed of them, i don’t and as a result have lost most of my friends. At this time i am 20 and am just scared to go and see any dentist because i have no trust in them any more. Can you give me any advice or a dentist that could give assurance that me teeth could be nice again. I do have a steady job and will pay anything to get them done, please help its a last resort. I look forward to hearing from you.

A. It seems that it will take some time for you to regain any trust in dentists

My problem is that caries occur interproximally and i dont know how to control this advice?

Saturday, July 11th, 2009
Q. Dear doctor my problem is that caries occure interproximally and i don’t know how to control this problem although i brush my teeth 3 times daily and i use dental floss after each meal and also i use chlorhexidine mouth wash thanx

A. Interproximal caries is traditionally associated with diet. Recent advice is that frequency rather than quality is most important, cut out snacking, stick to three meals a day and avoid drinks that are sweetened or fruit juices. Anything that a bacteria can ferment to get energy from will cause some decay.

I have worsening receeding gums and I’m not sure is there anything to improve it please advice

Saturday, June 20th, 2009
Q. I have worsening receeding gums and I’m not sure if there is anything that can improve this. I have recently stopped smoking and brush my teeth regularly with sensitive toothpaste and a soft bristle brush. My gums are not red or inflammed. My dentist doesn’t seem too concerned about this – but I am!! Advice please!! Thank you.

A. If you have now stopped smoking and are using all the right techniques for cleaning, the gums should stabilise, however if you want them to look better you may need to consider gum grafting surgery

What causes crest prohealth mouth rinse to stain the teeth? Will it also stain lumineers?

Saturday, May 16th, 2009
Q. What causes crest prohealth mouth rinse to stain the teeth? Will it also stain lumineers? Is there anything, such as medium bristle toothbrush, that can damage the surface of lumineers?

A. Electric toothbrushes are generally the best way to look after your teeth.  I am not aware that this mouthwash causes staining so maybe you have to look at your diet, smoking, tea and red wine are generally the worst staining substances.

what are the types of tooth brushing?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009
Q. What is the best manual brushing technique?

A. These points are good practice when brushing your teeth:
1. Hold your brush at a 45 degree angle. The brush should touch the gumline and the tooth
2. brush in small circular motions- concentrating on one tooth at a time
3. Repeat the same process on the inner surface of the teeth
4. tilt the brush vertically behing the front teeth- uppers and lowers
5. Brush the biting surface of the teeth aswell.
6. Use a medium toothbrush- one that isn’t so hard as it may cause damage to the gums
7. use a brush that isn’t too big- as the bristles need to reach in lots of small spaces.

Your hygienist will teach you this if you are unsure- and always remeber to floss or use inter-dental brushes.

i maintain good oral hygeine but still i have bad breath just after hours of brushing pls help

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009
Q. I maintain a very good oral hygeine but i usually have bad breath just after hours of brushing. I have used some of the expensive brands in the market but it still persist. Please give me a helping hand. Cheers

A. Bad breath is a condition called ‘halitosis’
It is often caused by poor oral hygiene, strong foods such as garlic and spices, drinking caffeine and alcohol can cause you to become dehydrated- reducing the saliva in your mouth- you need saliva to rinse the oral cavity from bacteria.
Also, smoking is a big factor.
You need to stress your concerns with your dentist and have regular hygiene visits. Hope this helps and thankyou for your enquiry.

could i have something else wrong with me that could be causing my gums receding

Friday, April 24th, 2009
Q. I’m a 42 year-old woman and i have a great concern about my gums. lately i have been experiencing receding gums in my inner and outer gum area. i practice good oral hygeine , brush, floss etc. what causes this. could i have something else wrong with me that could be causing this. i’ve even bought some mouth washes that are supposed to help but nope. can u please tell me what i shoud do.

A. It is likely that you would benefit from a visit to a dentist to check out the health of your gum beneath the visible line where the gum comes up to the tooth. It might also be good to see a dental hygeinist and show them your current cleaning practice. Some cases are caused by over brushing and others are caused by under brushing.

my gums are receding due to over brushing can you advice me

Monday, April 20th, 2009
Q. Dear Dr I am 34 years old and, from 2006 onwards, have been experiencing gum recession on the gums of the upper and lower jaw, from the incisors back. There is some root exposure on two teeth on the lower jaw. I have always looked after my teeth and my current dentist describes me as one of his best patients. He attributes the recession to overbrushing. Until recently I suffered from anxiety disorder and I suspect this may also have contributed, as I often clenched my teeth in my sleep (and sometimes still do). Following a phase of underbrushing due to my worry about the recession, I had a tutorial with my dental hygienist to ‘relearn’ my brushing technique and, since November, I have also been flossing, more or less on a daily basis. I am doing my best to ensure that I brush and floss as thoroughly but also as carefully as possible. However, the recession does not yet appear to have stabilised and I am very concerned about the long-term health of my gums and teeth, as well as about the aesthetic aspect. Is it likely that, despite my efforts to brush and floss carefully and thoroughly, an inadquate technique is still causing recession, especially where the flossing is concerned (on a few occasions the tape slipped and caused bleeding)? Or is it more likely to be the ongoing product of past overbrushing in my teens and twenties? Also, would you recommend that I obtain a second opinion, either from another dentist or from a peridontal specialist? I am very worried that I am may not be getting appropriate advice or treatment and am anxious to prevent the problem getting worse. I have begun to consider cosmetic treatment but I understand, of course, that treatment and prevention of underlying causes are of primary importance. I am a junior academic on a modest salary and therefore somewhat restrained in terms of funds. Nevertheless, I am willing to make a significant investment (timewise and financially) to deal with my problem. If you are able to recommend a respected dentist I would be immensely grateful (I live in Aberystwyth, west Wales, and I currently visit a private practice in Newtown). I would also be prepared to visit your own practice. Any advice or recommendations you are able to give me would be greatly appreciated.

A. I would recommend a visit with a Periodontist to ascertain whether it is gum disease or over brushing (both cause recession) We would be happy to help you my Periodontist Roberta could assess you and treat accordingly

let me know if you would like to come to us enquiry@advancedentalclinic.com
best wishes  Andrew

how can one avoid brown teeth and mouth odour?

Saturday, April 18th, 2009
Q. How can one avoid brown teeth & mouth odour? Please i need an answer urgently.Send it through my mail box.

A. Brown teeth could be due to dietary habits such as smoking , tea coffeee which will neeed to be decreased
overuse of whitening toothpastes
lack of proper brushing
my advice would be to see a hygenist and a dentist and get the right advice for you

i have read that you can use electric toothbrushes if you have veneer teeth if thats correct could you tell me which one you would recommend, as some can loosen your veneers?

Q. I have read that you can use electric toothbrushes if you have veneer teeth if thats correct could you tell me which one you would recommend, as some can loosen your veneers?

A. Hi
Electric tooth brushes won’t loosen veneers. It is in fact more important to keep the gum line around a veneer as clean as possible so I would recommend an electric brush such as the Braun Oral B series.

A. Hi The best is more down to personnal preference, however I find that any of the Braun/Oral B range work very well. You could also consider a Sonicare brush

Q. Hello, i was just wonering how artharitis Effects common oral manifestations. i appreciate your help. THANK YOU regards,

A. The drugs associated with arthritis may interact with the skin of the mouth or affect saliva, by association tooth decay rates. A big problem is often linked to poor brushing as hand become less able to manage tooth brushing. I recommend electric toothbrushes in these cases.

what kind of barriers do arthritis patients have with oral care

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009
Q. Dear Dr. Solanki I was wondering what kind of barriers arthritis patients go throught when it comes to oral care Thanks a lot Hope to hear from you soon!!

A. Hi many thanks for your email, the main problems i see with arthritis in patients is the ability to brush their teeth with enough force. so maybe brushing 3 times a day, using floride mouthwashes and regularing seeing a dental hygienist will help maintain your oral hygiene to the highest of level.
