How Do I Choose the Right Dentist?

Friday, November 4th, 2016
Q.

The outer side of my top tooth broke just days after an inlay was put in. It has been repaired with some filling, which I was told could last for some time before I had to make a decision what to do next. This filling on the outside is becoming loose just after a few days. The solution now I suppose is a crown. But how do I find a dentist to do the job right as I lost confidence in my present dentist?

Q.

I am working as a marketing consultant. Recently, my front tooth got broken in an accident. What treatment do you advise? What would the average cost be? Thank you.

My Mother’s Tooth Has Broken at the Gum Line. Should She Have Treatment?

Friday, October 2nd, 2015
Q.

My mother, who is 95 (and by the way her maiden is Hughes!) had a lower tooth of her six remaining front teeth break off at the gum line.
She is not in any pain and part of the dentin is seen in the center of where the crown was and not much redness or damage.
My question is:  Because she has Alzheimer’s and is 95, would it be better to let the gum tissue grow over the hole left if it can, instead of pulling it and causing perhaps unnecessary trauma or worse to my mom’s health?

What is the Best Material for Crowns?

Monday, May 11th, 2015
Q.

Dear Mr.Hughes, I broke an upper back tooth on Thursday night, which literally split across. I stuck it together with a repair kit from the chemist and went to see a new dentist (my dentist of many years has sadly retired) the following day hoping he would bond it back together.
Unfortunately he said he couldn’t, so recommended I have the loose piece pulled out and plan to come back for a crown.
I have to say I was rather disappointed.
My question is, was this really necessary?
And also what is the best material for crowns? I would prefer white rather then metal.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards.

Will a Temporary Filling Harm a Newly Fixed Broken Tooth?

Thursday, February 12th, 2015
Q.

Dear Dr Hughes. My son broke his front teeth which affected the pulp area as well.We had restoration work done on the same day. His next appointment is in six months. But now he is left with the uneven restoration layer and obviously it doesn’t look good at all. I was told to wait for the nerve healing process to play out but for the time being he’s not getting his smile back.
I would like to ask if a pleasant temporary filling is possible while we are waiting for it to heal, or will it disturb the healing process? Thank you.

My Filling Has Come Out and My Tooth is Broken. Is This an Emergency?

Thursday, November 13th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. My (I think it’s called a canine tooth, it’s 3rd tooth from the front to the left) has had a filling on it from when it broke in half about two years ago. The filling has come out, and I’m left with half a tooth again. Is this counted as an emergency? Or will I have to wait two weeks as that’s the only date they can see me? I don’t have any real pain but I am finding it very hard to eat and my tooth feels funny a lot of the time. Thank you in advance.

My Tooth Broke And A Filling Came Out After Root Canal Treatment. What Should I Do?

Wednesday, October 15th, 2014
Q.

Hello Marcus. I have had two root canals done. Very shortly afterwards one tooth broke. And a short while after that, the second tooth lost its filling. When the filling fell out, it exposed a hole and in the hole was cotton. It was definitely in the hole beneath the filling. Why would that be? I have looked on the internet and cannot find any reason this would be. It seems that somehow the dentist forgot something and in may have made a mistake. Thank you.

I’ve Never Been To The Dentist And I Have A Gap Between Front Teeth. Would I Need Braces Or A Dental Implant For This?

Thursday, September 25th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes, I would like your assistance. I have space between my teeth plus two teeth that never moved in line so it looks like I have a huge space there.
I need to know if I would need a dental implant for this or if I can fix my teeth just with braces? Also I have this broken tooth that looks really bad. I am very scared to see a dentist and have never been for a treatment earlier. I need to know how much time I can have all this fixed and how much will cost me? Thank you.

I Have a Broken Tooth, But It Isn’t Causing Pain. Should I Be Worried?

Friday, September 19th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Gambroudes. A while ago one of my fillings came loose and fell out. The tooth then cracked,  then the tooth fell out. However, there is still the root and a tiny but of tooth still present. I had an abscess, but I couldn’t get an appointment at the dentist’s until days after I got it and it eventually went away, so I never bothered going to the dentist after all. The area around the broken tooth is very red and a bit lumpy. I do not get any pain from this tooth, but should I be worried? Do you think I should go to the dentist anyway to make sure everything is okay? Thank you for your time.

I Was Due To Have A Root Canal But My Tooth Has Chipped. Can The Treatment Still Go Ahead?

Thursday, August 7th, 2014
Q.

Dear Dr Andrew Moore. I had my first appointment for root canal treatment on my left side bottom back molar a week ago, the dentist drilled and cleaned the inside of the tooth and put a temporary filling in. My next appointment is tomorrow. I grind my teeth in my sleep and yesterday I noticed a small chip in the back right corner of the molar – today a quarter of the tooth has come off! It has broken down near flush to the gum on that corner. Can the root canal still happen? I was told I needed to have a crown put in before – can this still happen with part of the tooth gone? Thank you for your time.
