Is there a way to give a new tooth within hours?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
Q. Hi, Im 21 and I have had a root filling in my front tooth a while ago, which made it appear discoloured, i then decided to get my teeth whitened, before the treatment i asked my dentist if the whitening would work on the root filled tooth as this was the main reason for the treatment, he said he would whiten the tooth from the inside and fill it again, after doing this i went back for a follow up appointment where he replaced the filling again and added more whitening treatment, my tooth felt very thin after this that i didnt even think he had filled it yet, when i mentioned it felt very hollow he said he had filled it. On a 3rd follow up appointment he was going to replace the filling again until i mentioned i thought the whiteness of the tooth appeared “grainy” again, he THEN suggested getting a crown and to go away and think about it. Shouldnt this have been suggested in the beginning? I then noticed a crack appearing in my tooth from the inside and today while brushing my teeth the tooth has cracked off completely. I’m so upset as it looks awful. Is there something the dentist could do straight away as i couldnt face going into work with no tooth. thanks.

A. I am one of the few dentists in the country who could give you a new tooth within a few hours.  Please ring my practice on 01727854429 to see if we can see you this week.  I certainly understand your embarrassment but it is a very unusual situation for a front tooth to fracture like this unless there was a lot of decay present in the tooth before youre dentist started treatment.

My broken teeth hurts now but i cant afford an implant what should I do?

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
Q. My top right molar snapped last year and my dentist bonded it back wit a filling – its starting to smell & bleeds when i floss. it hurts no and again but not too much!! my dentist wants to take it out but i really want to save it as i cant afford an implant what should i do?

A. It doesn’t sound like the tooth can be saved unless your dentist could try a post crown. It sounds like you’ll need to see him soon in case there is an infection developing.

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009
Q. I had a root canal down years ago, 2 months ago that tooth broke in half and half fell out, the other half is still there and theres a hole that hurts, thought there was food in it so used tooth pick, felt like i hit the upper jaw bone and then it went up the side of my gum. what do i need done?

A. You’ll probably need the rest of the tooth removing and then consider replacing the tooth with an implant, bridge or denture.

My teeth has broken off and rotted down causing pain can you pls advice

Sunday, August 16th, 2009
Q. I have a fear of dentists and have avoided going for years, alot of my teeth have now broken off or rotted down causing extreme pain, one of my teeth at the back has completely snapped off leaving the root in and now my gum is starting to close around it i think it may be infected or maybe an abcess as my face has got swollen and i cant even bite anymore. I know i should be going to the dentist but im so scared and embarrassed that i’ve let it get so bad, i cant sleep cant eat and now i’ve started burning up really bad so im really scared, i cant even tell my partner cos im so ashamed of my teeth Please can you give me advice on what i can do before this gets any worse, Thank You

A.

You are not alone with being scared in coming to the dentist. Having pain is not a good sign and its time to see a dental professional.
Please rememeber that all dental practitioners are are professionals and would really like to help you get back on the right track.
The first step is to find someone you feel comfortable with, speak to friends or work colleagues and see if they can recommend someone, seach on the internet to view some of the clinics that appeal to you. Call a couple of those practices and I am sure you will find that they will be very respectful and very happy to help you.
If you are scared there are options to make your treatment as comfortable as possible such a sedation – which will make you very relaxed and not remember any of the treatment.
My advice is go as soon as you can so it doesnt get worse and there is always a solution. Be brave and you will soon have that great smile you dream about – get that confidence back.

Would you be able to get a temp dentures immediately for my broken teeth

Monday, August 3rd, 2009
Q. Dear Sir, I am very embarest and feel very depressed as the majority of my teeth are broken and down to the gum line. I have no confidence in myself now hance why I feel embarest and depressed about myself. I am very scared of dental work. My friend said that when he got dentures he had to go about for some months with no teeth untill the gums healed. Would you be able to get temp imediate ones. Can you help me by suggesting what to do and the likely costs thanking you for your help

A. When you have your teeth out- it is common practice to make you a set of temporary dentures for you to wear whilst your gums and soft tissues heal for a few months. Once they have settled, the dentist will then start to make you a final set of dentures taht will fit much better. Costs vary- but expect to pay around £900 for a good quality new denture. Some practices may offer you cheaper and it is entirely your call where you choose to have them made. You need to get a quotation from several dental practices and find a dentist that you feel comfortable with.

I lock my jaw during sleep and busted my teeth how can i get this fixed?

Saturday, August 1st, 2009
Q. I lock my jaw during sleep and busted my tooth in the back, have of it is down to the gum, what will need to be done to fix this ?

A. Firstly, as you grind/clench at night- you need to sort out this issue with a night bite guard or a stabilistaion splint. Your toot that has been broken can only be restored depending on how much tooth is left – you may need root canal treatment and a core build up with crown. it is difficult for me to say without seeing the tooth in qusetion- so you need to at least see your dentist and discuss what options you have. if the tooth is causing you pain, then this needs to adressed ASAP.

My teeth are broken and rotting is there a cheap way to fix it

Thursday, July 30th, 2009
Q. Hi i am 33 years old and my teeth are broken and rotting i am a nhs patient but am aware they dont cover cosmetic work i am willing to pay any extra there may be but my budget is 3000 pounds i have had quotes of aroud 8000 pounds which is way to expensive i have lost all my confidence and would be grateful if you could help me find somewhere that could do what they can on the nhs and charge me for the rest thank you

A. I think you will need to speak to various NHS dentists to see what they can do for you. This sort of arrangement can only be made on an individual basis with a dentist.

My 14 month old fell over and broken his front teeth what can be done to make them look better?

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009
Q. Hi My son fell over on friday and he has broken both his front teeth. he is only 14 months old and the teeth are now quite sharp (like fangs). is there anything that can be done to make them look better? i took him to our dentist but they said there is nothing they can do. A friend has said they could be filed smoother?

A. If your dentist feels that nothing can be done that is probably the case. Treating a very small child is very difficult and can be traumatic for the child. However you may be able do something when he is a bit older.

My mum has a partial denture and the front tooth has broken off is there anything to stick it on

Thursday, July 9th, 2009
Q. My mum has a partial denture and the front tooth has broken off, she does not have a NHS dentist and therefore will have to pay and at present this is not an option. She is also a diabetic and is struggling to eat and is quite distressed about her appearance. Is there anything we can stick the tooth back on the denture with that is safe until she can get the funds together to visit a dentist. thanks for your help

A. Unfortunatley I cannot recommend that you do this – if fixed incorrectly the denture may not fit or the tooth may fall off with the possibility of your mother inhaling the tooth.  There are denturists who are lab techs with extra qualifications allowing them to carry out this work without your mother having to see a dentist

Ive a serve phobia of dentist and i have two pretty deep cavities could i have root canal treatment

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009
Q. Hi Dr, I have a severe phobia of dentists following a bad experience when I was younger. I have two pretty deep cavities one at each side at the back top teeth, I can stick my tounge quite far into one of them and I have extremely bad breath which I’m guessing is a result of these. I have finally found the courage to go to the dentist and will go soon. I am only 25 years old and cannot bear the thought of extraction and would quite happily have root canal and crowns. I’m wondering if there are any instances where root canal cannot be used and extraction is the only option? I really don’t want to have missing teeth at 25, even if it is the back teeth! My confidence is so low, I’m so aware of my breath it’s ruining my life and as i have just graduated, I feel I cannot be a proffessional the way my teeth and breath are at the moment. Kind regards

A. If the tooth is too infected or broken down then sometimes extraction is the only option. You can, however, replace missing teeth with denatl implants or bridges so if the tooth does need removal then it is possible to put a tooth back in.

Pregnancy has drained my teeth and 3 teeth of my teeth broken to gumline what should i do

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009
Q. My teeth had always been healthy, up until I got braces when I was 14. They ruined my teeth.. since then its been downhill..I have 4 teeth that are so decayed and broken and I am so embarrassed b/c I am so young. I was also bulemic when I was younger as well. I just had a baby too, and I found that pregnancy drained my teeth! I need to know what I should do. 3 teeth are broken to the gumline. I have an appt july 13th and I want to be prepared to ask the right questions and have the right care!

A. You need a full assessment and you need to find a dentist you feel comfortable with.  First step is to assess the teeth and gums and decide which teeth can be saved, get your gums healthy, improve your own cleaning of your teeth so you can look after them better.  Once this stage is done options can be given to improve your smile and fill gaps.

The corner of one of my teeth has broken off should i have bonding or crown

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
Q. Hi. Please can you advise me on whether I should have a crown or try bonding first… The corner of one of my teeth has broken off – it is on the bottom set, the second double tooth from back (I only have 4 double teeth each side). I had a lot of pain eating on it and my dentist presumed there was a crack but couldn’t find it, so replaced my filling in the hope it would help. Two weeks later part of it has fallen off. I have been given the option of having the corner rebuilt (with same material as used for fillings I think), but dentist cannot determine how strong this would be and whether it would last as these are my main chewing teeth. The price for that would be around £100, or he has suggested a porcelain crown at £500. (I would not consider the gold option as it would be visible). Obviously that is a lot of money which I don’t really want to spend. Would you advise me to try the bonding first or just go straight for the crown? with thanks

A. Bonding for a back tooth will only last a very short amount of time and can fall off pretty easily when biting, that is why a crown is usually the best option

One side of my veneers had fallen off, can it be bonded back together with less cost?

Sunday, June 14th, 2009
Q. Hello, I had veneers put in 2 years ago and had a broken front one replaced free of charge last year. Unfortunately one of the side ones has now cracked and half of it has fallen off. I have contacted my dentist and asked about ‘fixing’ it back on but he is saying a brand new veneer at £600.00 is the only option. Can Veneers not be bonded back together is it is a clean break? Maybe I’m just getting fed up of spending more on top of the original £10,000! thanks

A. The joinbetween the two halves will always be detectable. As you spent a lot on the appearance of your teeth, I guess this would annoy you in the long term. At current fracture rates You should look into if any changes need to be made to your bite. Possibly wear a night time guard. It is worth asking for a reduced fee on the replacement.
