I have a real fear of the dentist

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Q. I have a real fear of the dentist and have just went through a year of dental work to to get 7 front upper crowns (had to go private). When it came to choosing the colour, my dentist showed me A2 which I thought was a bit yellow so we compromised on the main front 4 to be A1 and the others A2 (I thought this would be ok as I have a small mouth and am a smoker, I also bleaced my bottom teeth before they were fitted and they looked like A1 shade). When I went to get them fitted he informed me the technician had done them all A2 but he thought they would be more natural for me. This was last week and people are telling me they lovely (and they are) but now I am tortured over the colour and wish I had have said at the time, I just dont know whether to accept that they are more natural or go back and complain about the front 4? Everytime I look in the magazines at all the lovely white teeth, mine look so yellow yet the odd time I look at them in different lights they look ok. Sorry to drone on but I feel so anxious over the huge cost and just need some advice? Many many thanks.

A.

Shade a2 is a yellow colour and it is natural but now there are so many other whiter shades that can still look natural but they are much brighter. A really natural shade selection is A1 at the top third of the tooth and then transitioning into shade B1.
You have had the crowns fit now so unfortunately the only way to change the colour is to have the crowns replaced.

You could go back to the dentist and tell them that you don’t like the colour. Since it was not the colour you originally asked for, the dentist should be prepared to re do the crowns. It is of course up to the dentist whether you are charged again. From a good will point of view it would be nice if he replaced them for you at no cost. After all it was a lab error. However you did consent to have them fit so he is under no obligation to replace them for free. It is best if you go in and talk to him about your concerns and maybe you could reach some compromise. It is always best to go for the colour that you want and not want the dentist tells you. You are the customer after all.

will my dental implnts last all my life

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Q. Should implants last for life, are they easy to take care of and would all dentists do a good job. I have been given an estimate by a Dr Reza Ardalan, Lodge Causeway, Bristol on what he advises, I am just wondering whether to see anybody else.

A. Implants last a long time and sometimes they do last forever but sooner or later things can fail in the mouth even if looked after properly. There are many things that can be done to increase the longevity of implants. The implant needs to be correctly treatment planned, ie we need to make sure the bone quality and quantity is good enough, implants ideally shouldn’t be placed in people that smoke, are immunocompromised or have gum disease. There needs to be sufficient healing time before the final crown is placed over the top of the implant, the implant shouldn’t be placed in extreme proximity to another root, The final restoration should not interfere with btes and chewing patterns and the implant and crown should be well looked after. Regular check ups and hygiene visits are needed to make sre that implant stays clean. There is a condition called periimplantitis. This means the bones and gum holding the implant in become infected and the implant falls out. This is why so much has to be taken into account before the implant is placed. If you have to have a tooth removed before the implant is placed, this too has to be extracted in a very careful manner to preserve the bone and blood supply in the area.
If you are unsure that your dentist is able to carry out placement you can ask him how many he has done and whether he has any before and after photos. Also ask if he has a knowledge of occlusion. This is the study of the jaw and how the teeth bite together. This is essential for anyone carrying out these types of treatments
I hope this helps

I want perfect teeth and need to find a bristol cosmetic dentist

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Q. I have a photo of a person who’s teeth I think are perfect. Given this photo, would a cosmetic dentist be able to recreate that look in my teeth? I regularly attend the local (Bridgwater, Somerset) dentist, but don’t think that he would be appropriate so I would have to find one from the list of Bristol based dentists on this site.

A. We encourage patients to bring phots of smiles they like.  This gives us a good idea of what your wishes and desires are and also the level of expectation – sometimes it is not possible to give you the smile in the picture for many reasons.  Knowing what you want we are able to discuss with you what is and isn’t possible.  There is nothing worse than promising the and failing to deliver.  Hopefully a cosmetic dentist near you will be able to make you happy with your smile.
