I Have Dentures Which I Dislike. Would I Be Suitable For Dental Implants?

Monday, November 18th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I have upper dentures and only 9 bottom teeth because of advanced gum disease. I want to know if a whole upper implant is possible and how costly it would be if it was possible? I have disliked the dentures since I had my teeth removed against my will. Please reply as I am living in agony with dentures. I have seen many people with implants and it is what I would like to have. I do have dental coverage, although they may not include implants. Thank you.

I Had An Infection After A Temporary Filling And Now I’m Told The Only Option Is A Denture. What Would You Say I Should Do?

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013
Q.

I had a broken tooth that wasn’t painful or any trouble until my dentist decided to give it temporary filling whilst doing a couple of other fillings that were necessary, following this I have been in agony as it got infected. I went back and they gave me antibiotics which I have almost finished the course but am still in the same amount of pain. they have said they will just need to take it out and the only option of filling the gap they have given is dentures which is traumatising for me to even think about as I’m only 23 they have said no to bridges because both the teeth either side to the broken one are healthy. I never asked them to do anything to that tooth and now I’m in so much pain and upset with the tooth. they haven’t been very nice as they caused this and now are trying to force dentures upon me and keep saying I have no other options. I am absolutely distraught over this and I desperately want some help?

I Have Two Loose Teeth. I Am Dubious About Implants. Would Bridge Work Be The Better Option?

Friday, November 8th, 2013
Q.

I have two loose teeth – one at the front top and one at the side top. Because the front one is unsightly and protruding forward my local NHS dentist has suggested having a bridge fitted. Because I have had gum disease in the past my gums have receded and I am dubious about having an implant therefore a bridge seems the obvious solution. I am wondering whether I should have them taken out before consulting you or leave them in for your assessment. I would also be interested in the cost for bridge work on both teeth if that’s possible.

How Long Does A Bridge Last On Average And Will They Fit Another When It’s Finished?

Wednesday, October 30th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Shaffie. I heard someone say recently that a bridge should last between 10 to 15 years, right? After then what happens to it? Does it break or fall out? Is there a chance it can cause other health issues? I’m currently awaiting treatment for this and I’d like to know if it’s safe, also will they be able to fit me with a new one when it’s finished? I’m wondering how long the whole procedure takes as well. You would really be helping me by answering any of these questions and offering your expert advice. Thank you.

If My Damaged Tooth Is Crowned, Will It Fracture The Root And What Are My Other Options?

Monday, October 28th, 2013
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes. My upper left lateral was crowned to the base of the root after an abscess, which led to subsequent root canal treatment and finally the breaking of the weakened tooth. The post has broken with around a quarter of it still left in the root. Currently it is temporarily re-cemented back in.

Could this be re-crowned or is the removal of the remaining bit of the post likely to fracture the root?

Is is possible to have this re-crowned or is the only option, if I do not want a denture or the risk of damage to the adjoining teeth by a bridge, an implant?

Thank you.

My Dentist Trimmed My Teeth Too Far Down And Now They Are Sensitive, Now I May Need A Root Canal. What Should I Do?

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013
Q.

Dear Doctor,
9 Months ago I got dental bridges on both sides (lower) from Pakistan. The dentist had trimmed the teeth too much and I still feel sensitivity issues with cold, hot and even pressure. Though it gets better with time but not finished. I consulted another dentist and he advised me to leave it as they will be okay with time. The dentist who fixed them, now advising me for root canal but I don’t want to because my supporting teeth are healthy and I don’t want them to be dead.
Now I am in the UK,  please advise me, what do I have to do to overcome this problem? Can I wait more or go for the replacement of bridges.

Thank you and kind regards.

I Would Really Like To Do Something About The Space Between My Front Teeth, But Implants Are Too Expensive, What Else Can I Do?

Tuesday, September 10th, 2013
Q.

Hi, I would really like to know whether you can have a bridge fitted if there is just one tooth at one side and two teeth at the other side. I believe I need a bridge for four teeth? I have a partial denture at the moment, the space is between my front teeth and I would really like to do something about it, but implants are a bit too expensive for me. I have had the dentures for the past thirty years and not sure if anything can be done for me now, perhaps you can advise me on this whether it would be possible to do or not?

I Recovered A Tooth Playing Rugby. I’m Worried It Will Fall Out When I Eat, Do I Need Treatment?

Friday, August 23rd, 2013
Q.

Hi, I had my tooth knocked out playing a rugby match two years ago. I managed to save the tooth and they put it back in with a brace for six weeks. I haven’t suffered with any problems up until now however, as it has now come loose and it is making it hard for me to chew and eat my food. What are the possible treatment solutions open to me? I’m worried and scared that it may fall out at any moment, and it’s changed the way I sound when I talk. I am also worried about the possible costs that could occur due to my financial restrictions. So I’d like to know the costs? Can you help me with my enquiries? Thanks.

Do One Day Implants Really Work And Can I Have a Bridge with Veneers?

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013
Q.

I have 4 front porcelain veneers and need to remove tooth number 8 due to a root deterioration (I had a root canal at a early age and I currently have had an infection on root of tooth 8 for while now with gum separation and have already had 2 apicoectomys done). I am trying to decide between an implant or bridge (conventional or Maryland). Prosthodontist said I could go for a bridge due to already having veneers and a possible color difference if I did implant. I have a real anxiety issue about implants because if it is too long of a process then I don’t think I can go for so long with a temporary or flipper (emotionally speaking). My questions are:

1) Do one-day implants really work and are they truly done in one day?
2) Can I have Maryland bridge if I have veneers?
Thank you in advance for your response.

Is An Implant My Only Option?

Wednesday, July 17th, 2013
Q.

Had a crown for front tooth at least 20 it came loose after about 5 years dentist x-rayed it and refitted which was fine for about 4 years then infection showed up under crown dentist tried to get crown off but it would not budge so used cement to firmly fix it in place as said pulling it off could fracture tooth root. Had regular check ups and all has been well until I had an accident whereby I was hit in the mouth crown is now moving loose by the gum line. Old dentist now gone from practice but new dentist says he will do nothing and recommends implant. Is this only option?
