Can the NHS offer me any financial help for implants?

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

A. The nhs will not fund this type of advanced dental treatment – sorry

Can I get implants for missing teeth due to baby teeth?

Friday, February 26th, 2010
Q. My dentist tells me that i have still alot of baby teeth and this is the reason why i have lost several teeth in the past due to the fact they are not as robust as adult teeth, he gave the correct name for this problem but i cannot remember it! Any how i want implants to replace the teeth that i have lost and the two which are due to lose because they are on their last legs so to speak. Most of the missing teeth are back and upper molars, is this the best option and what is the correct name for the problem that i have,
A. Missing teeth are quite common and dental implants are definately the best option to replace them, find a good dental implantologist and get a consultation.

Anything be done about tooth decay due to prolonged breastfeeding?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
Q. My 3 year old son has decay which our dentist has said is due to prolonged night time breastfeeding. His front top teeth look terrible and the dentist has said our only options are extraction or leaving the teath to go black!. We feel that there must be an alternative that will not leave him facing horrible comments from other children. We do not have a great deal of money but would like to find out all our options. Thank you.,
A. Unfortunately your dentist has given you your only options – thankfully these are only the baby teeth.

What can be done for 18 month child with lack of teeth due to genes?

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
Q. Hi there, I just took my 18 month old son to the dentist following his pediatrician’s advice. He only has his two front teeth, and they are spaced widely apart and misshapen. After taking an x-ray, the dentist confirmed that my son had very few baby teeth and even less permanent teeth. He told my husband and I that we are facing a long road filled with dental and orthodontic procedures that will cost us several thousand dollars. I was more concerned about an underlying condition that may have caused such a rarity. The dentist convinced me that it was just a case of bad genes ( i had vaguely similar problems). He also told me that not much could be done to correct his teeth now. My husband and I are so fearful that he will be ridiculed and excluded in school if nothing is done to help him. I read that implants are not a consideration for young children. We are awaiting an appointment with an oral surgeon, but in the meantime, can you tell me what our other options are? Thanks.,
A. Unfortuantly I couldn’t personally help you as I don’t specialise in children. We do however have a fantastic Peadiatric dentist who works with us every 2nd Monday who may be able to give you a 2nd opinion. Dr Mike Harrison Ph: 0207 612 9810Justin Glaister

Can adult canine tooth be removed?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010
Q. Hi Dr Tennet. I am 25 years old and have not been to the dentist for about 11 years due to fear. I still have a baby canine tooth and my adult canine has been sat above it waiting to come down. I am so emabarassed about it, i am constantly worrying about it, it is really knocking my confidance. I have managed to get into a dentist and am just wondering what my options are. What i really want is to have the adult canine removed, I have very straight teeth and feel if they wanted to bring the adult canine tooth down it may push against my other teeth as it not sat straight in my gums anymore. Can adult canines be removed? and also would they keep my baby tooth in or could they insert an implant? Thank you for you help,
A. Most cases that I have treated have had a better result by removing the baby tooth and the Adult canine. All cases are slightly different and if you would like a free initial consultation at our Birmingham Practice please call 0121 643 0610 .Rob

Still have milk teeth

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. Hi, I have a strange set of teeth! I am 21 and have still not lost a majority of my milk teeth, leaving me with a crowded jar. My dentist has removed two teeth to free up space, but this incidentally has been filled by others. It is only the bottom set i have trouble with. with overlapping and teeth at incorrect angles my mouth is difficult to maintain. I believe i may need another tooth removing on the bottom, but would then require some form of bracing to correct the smile. Is there a non invasive/visible form of bracing, and in what cases would you advice cosmetic dentistry, which is usually an expensive option. I am also yet to receive my wisdom teeth. is it an issue that i still have milk teeth, how will this affect me? My jar is also often painful, bearably but it is annoying and it often clicks on the left side at my joint a lot when i open wide,
A. A “mixed dentition ” as you have needs to be assessed to make sure you have the adult teeth underneath your baby teeth to come through.  21 is late to still have a number of baby teeth present.  Invisalign is a possible option for invisible braces.  Your clicking jaw is caused by your disc in your joint not sitting correctly – correct diagnosis of this problem and relating it to your tooth position following orthodontics is the way forward

Is there something to fill a gap while the adult tooth comes?

Friday, December 11th, 2009
Q. My daughter who is 15 has had braces which were taken off recently. There is a history of let teeth in the family. She had a milk canine removed to encourage the appearance of the new one but so far, no show. She is now wearing a clear retainer with an artificial tooth in it, but has to remove it to eat which she is self conscious about. I fear the tooth may not show for a long time. Is there ever anything temporary that you can do with a plate, or something attached to braces on the inside of the teeth to fill the gap until the tooth comes? Do you have a view on the process of attaching a chain to the adult tooth and pulling it down?

A. Hello, often exposure of the buried tooth and a brace to pull it down is your only option Temporisation is very difficult in these cases but a plastic tooth could be fitted to the fixed brace to improve the appearance in this area let me know if I can be of any further assistance

Why is the adult teeth yellowish compared to baby teeth?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. My granddaughter is eight and her second front teeth (well the first one in any case) is coming through a yellow colour. Is there a problem here and can this be resolved by any kind of dentistry. Her first teeth were quite white.

A. Baby teeth always look whiter than adult teeth due to the different optical properties of the enamel and the relative difference of dentine to enamel proportion.  When the adult teeth are all there the contrast will not be obvious.  If they still look yellow she can have them bleached when she is older

My receeding gum line is exposing metal bridge also causing teeth gap

Friday, November 6th, 2009
Q. In early March this year, finally my “baby tooth” cut through – in the roof of my mouth, just behind my eye/front tooth at a pointing outward angle. Nothing special really, except that I’m 43 years old. I needed dental surgery, as it was pushing my front tooth forward and making loose my 3 tooth bridge. I had the surgery at Guy’s Hosipital under the care of a lovely team. It was pretty drastic I must admitt, drilling through the front of my upper gum line to the left of eye tooth and incision/hole drilled in the roof of my mouth to extract said tooth. Nine months later however, I’m left with a widening gap of the eye/front tooth and my 3 tooth bridge is loose, and lower than my gum line. My whole gum line has changed above the bridge so that now you can actully see the metal structure of the bridge itself. The bridge used to fit snug and I never had a gap either at the top of this structure or as is now a gap between my front and eye tooth. I don’t think my upper jaw bone structure would support implants following my surgery. What would you suggest? At this point I am seriously considering a denture of some form, one that does not involve invasive surgery, but then what about the gap between front tooth and eye tooth?

A. Hi it sound like you’ve been through a lot so a denture would seem like an easy option. It might be a good short term option however I guess in the long run you would probably be more comfortable with fixed teeth. This could probably be acheived using an implant supported bridge although it sounds like the bone would need rebuilding firts. Perhaps you could go back to Guys and ask them for their opinion as they have very experienced surgeons who might be able to help you.

A. Hi michelle, there are many practices including mine which offer payment plans interest free and low interest. the cost for fixed teeth per arch to replace a denture ranges from about £10000, to £15000. the best thing would be to book a free consultation think about how much you could afford monthly and we will discuss the right plan of action for your budget. hope this is helpful.

Need to fix my crooked teeth with best result

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009
Q. Dear doc I had lost my baby tooth after my adult tooth grew in right in front of it and now my teth are crooked is there a way to fix this before my wedding in June?

A. You could look at short term orthodontics such as 6 month smiles or invisalign.  You really need a cosmetic consultation to assess your options.

Is its possible to replace veneers by having baby teeth removed?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009
Q. Hi. I went to the dentist a few weeks ago, I had a tooth that was lose. She told me it was a baby canine. After doing an x-ray, she said the tooth on the other side was also a baby, and that both adult tooth, were still up in the gums. She talked about braces and having the adult teeth exposed. I really do not want to have braces. I’m 26. Is it possible to just have the baby teeth removed and have veneers put in instead???

A. Hi many thanks for your email, if you have the baby teeth extracted, your fixed options are:

1: braces, expose the adult teeth and try to bring them down.
2: bridges on both sides to replace the missing teeth. so no need for braces.

hope this is helpful.

Whats the risk involved in having dentistry students perform the surgery?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
Q. Hello. Five years ago, my orthodontist informed me that I am missing both of my adult upper canines. I am currently 20 and, luckily, I am still in possession of my ‘baby-teeth’ but I fear that I may loose them within the next year. I’ve been told that I will need dental implants, and that they’re very expensive. Being a student, I’m already facing a large amount of debt. Is is possible to get this treatment on the NHS? My dentist has informed me that it may be possible to reduce the cost by having dentistry students perform the surgery. How much risk is involved if I choose to go to a teaching hospital, etc?

A. There should be no risk as the treatment could be performed under supervision of the tutor let me know how much you can afford as I run a course where we use patients to teach other dentists my e mail is implants@advancedentalclinic.com

My canine may fall is there any way I can put temp tooth there?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
Q. I am 19 both of my canines are impacted, now the canine on my left is lose and will likely fall out in the next month or so, once it falls out how long do you think it will take to grow back this is so embarrassing for me i am pregnant as well and i am going to feel so ugly!! and also once it falls out it there any way i can put a temp. tooth there?

A. Hi many thanks for your email, i no this is not good news but once the baby tooth does fall out it is not automatic that the impacted canine will come out, very possibly it is more likely that the canine will not come out. my advice will be to see your dentist and discuss your options before you lose the tooth.
