I’ve Been Told I Need an Apicectomy, but the Pain Has Subsided. Do I Still Need Treatment?

Tuesday, September 9th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes, I hope you are well. I have been told by my dentist that I need an apicectomy above my bridge (the 3 top teeth). Unfortunately, I didn’t ask enough questions at the consultation so I’m not really sure what this means, and the dentist said I may have gum shrinkage afterwards. Will this be noticeable? I am not in any pain anymore and I don’t think I want it done if it’s going to look funny, and it will be pointless if I no longer need it. Also, I have to have another apicectomy on the bottom gold crown, but this time I have to go to an outpatients hospital instead. Thank you for your help.

I feel that my crown and bridge might be loose. What can I do?

Q.
I have four crowns on my front teeth that were originally placed there when I was 18 ( now I’m 58) About four years ago a dentist replaced one tooth by a bridge, and also performed an apexectomy which left a “ledge” above the tooth. Now the whole area is feeling mobile but specifically the crown which is holding the bridge. As these are my front teeth I am very anxious about my appearance but the teeth. What can I do ? I don’t have a lot of confidence in my dentist. Thank you,

Are NHS crowns as bad as my dentist claims?

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010
Q.
Hi. I have just recently been to see my dentist and have been told that I will need a crown on one of my front upper tooth (I had an apesectomy so there is no root and the tooth is very grey). However he said it would be better to go private as the NHS Crowns are not a great colour and is very noticeable in colour compared to my other teeth! I have been quoted £400 if I wanted to go private, which I can not afford as I am four months pregnant. My question being, are the NHS crowns as noticeable as my dentist says?,
