Can everything be done in one go putting anastetic?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. Hello, I have been to the dentist today to have a filling and my dentist gave me 1 needle and started drilling straight away, while he was doing this the pain was unbearable he then gave me 2 more needles and tryed again the pain was still agony and he said i waas lying even though i was shaking and crying. i am not terrified of going again but i have to go 4 more times for 4 more fillings. i was wondering could i be put under general anastetic so they could do everything that needed doing in one go as i dont think i could possible go back and be awake for another filling im just to scared!! please help me!!

A. hi many thanks for your email, obviously this experiance has shattered your confidence with the dentist. my advice would be to seek a dentist that maybe does treatment under IV sedation which is much safer than general, and can be done in a dental practice setting. the sedation will really make you less anxious and willing to accept treatment.

Can I hv GA in your local NHS dentist Plz advice

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. hi i need a lot of dental work. im 21 and terrified. can you be put asleep in your local nhs dentist?

A.

You cannot go under GA in any general dental practice you would need to be referred to the hospital by your general dentist. Some dental practices however so offer sedation.

Kind regards

Ive a huge phobia of needles can ive treatment under general aneastetic

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Q. I have a huge phobia of needles and because of it have very bad teeth, i have had to have 10 removed under general aneastetic (gas induction because of my phobia) and have had an abcess that spread to my sinus and apparently almost killed me. Because of this I was wondering whether it is possible to have a full clearance under general aneastetic with a gas induction and how much this could cost me?

A. General Anaesthesia is only done in hospital these days. I suggest that you contact the department who arranged the last treatment Rob

Will sedation make me totally unconcious?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Q. hi, i have a fear of the dentist and i was looking for sedation, if i where to get sedation would i be totally unconscious

A. Sedation is when you are almost asleep but not completely knocked out.  It can be oral sedation or intravenous sedation, the later given a more profound sedation.  With sedation you feel very relaxed and sleepy and remember very little if anything about the dental procedure.

im suffering from sensitive gumline after restoration plz advice?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Q. Hi, I had a white restoration on a lower right molar today. After having drilled out the bulk of the old filling, my dentist was using an instrument with some force when the inner side of the tooth broke off (I felt it ‘go’ and it flew up into my line of sight). As a result, he “was not able to contour the tooth the way he would have liked to” and (now the anaesthetic has worn off) the restoration feels quite uncomfortably sensitive on the gumline and the tooth has an unnatural shape that seems to trap food when I eat and which feels weird as well. After the procedure, my dentist said that things hadn’t gone as expected and he’d “used an instrument to check how strong the tooth was and sometimes during this procedure, the tooth breaks”. Having thought about this it seems completely counter-intuitive that someone would risk breaking the structure of the tooth as he stated and I’m sceptical that he told me the truth. Is there such an instrument to test the strength of the tooth? My feeling is that it broke while he was using a ‘pick’ to try to break out some old amalgam filling in the drilled cavity. I like my dentist and he’s done really good work for me in the past, but having parted with £170 for this procedure (on top of the other charges for Hygienist Visit, X-Rays and 10 Point Exam the previous day), I suddenly lack trust in him and I’m wondering if I should spend my money elsewhere in future. I appreciate that any answer you might give is nothing more than an opinion and has no legal meaning or weight, but I’d really appreciate your take on this situation as I’m at a loss as to what I should do. Best regards,

A. go back to him and express your views there is probably a very reasonable explanation for this, it would be a shame to break down the trust you have in this dentist considering the good work he has done for you in the past.

Will anesthetic cause problems to the heart?

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Q. Why is it that when I have a dentist drill on my teeth I always have some sensativity even if given a second dose of novacaine. Second question, I have recently had palpitations of the heart after about a week of using novacaine. Could this be the cause of my palpitations? They haven’t stopped for about a month now. Any advice? I have never had heart problems before.

A. The anaesthetic won’t cause any problems a week later but possibiliy a the time og the injection. Ask your dentist to check it out or consult your doctor.

Can i get my teeth taken out under general anesthesia at the hospital?

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Q. hello, back in october last year i had 8 teeth removed,2 months later i had a dental absess that ingulfed my face. i had to have surgery and more teeth removed as they plugged the absess. in that time i had the inside of my mouth cut open in 2 places with a scalpul and an epidural needle plunged into my face. as a result of this i have had a nervous breakdown and think about my mouth 24 hours a day. i have only 7 teeth on the top set left, 2 have extreme long tooth and 2 are crowns, the bottom i have 9 teeth all my fronts mainly and one side which i use to eat. they need a very deep clean.now since all this has happened i have tried to go to the dentist but i have huge panick attacks and vomit my nerves are shot, i even tried to go via sedation but even the though of needles etc coming near me sends me into tears and i cant breath. as i cant seem to deal with this would i be able to have my teeth taken out under general at the hospital, and if so how would i go about doing this. would be grateful for any advice.

A. You need to try and get your dentist to refer you to hospital where they should be able to manage your extreme dental and needle phobia

If xiline causes me faint what else can be used as anestestic

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Q. If xiline (lidocaine) causes me earblock, tachycardia, fainting, what else can be used as anestesic for molar extraxction(58 yrs old, no heart problem, only tyroid hypo). Thanks

A. Speak to your dentiat and let him know these problems prior to your appointment. The ingredient in the lidocaine or lignocaine is adrenaline which makes you faint or your heart beat fast. There are adrenaline free anesthetics such as citanest or septonest.

I had a collapse after having the lignocaine as an anesthesia can u advice on it

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Q. I am 58 yrs old and had before dental works and extraction with (xiline) lignocaine +adrenaline as anesthesia. But 2 years ago, when the same anesthesia was injected to me, to remove one tooth on upper maxilary, I had a collapse (immediately my ears got blocked and I could not hear at all, I almost fainted and my breathing was fast. I was laid down on the floor for 3 hours. Since then I am afraid to go to dentist, althoug I need urgently to restore my teeths? PLEASE help me, what kind of anesthesia can I use not to have these symptoms? I live in Bucharest and I’ve tried all and nobody knows why, some say the anestesia was wrongly injected, some say I may be allergic to lignocaine(Xiline). I am not sick with heart, but I have hypothiroidia (some small nodules). Please help. THANKS

A. I would ask your dentist to try a non-adrenaline anaesthetic or have a patch test done by your doctor to see if you are allergic to the lignocaine, however it does sound more like a reaction to the adrenaline.

i have a crumbled and overlapping teeth can all this be done at a time under general anesthetic

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Q. Hi, I have not been to a dentist for about 8 years as I have emetophobia (a phobia of being sick) and used to have anorexia and was worried that any treatment I had would make me sick. My teeth do need a lot of work now, four of them have ‘crumbled’ away due to very poor diet, and the front two teeth overlap. Because of my phobia I would prefer to be put under a general anesthetic and have all the work done at the same time. So my question is; is it possible to have all this done at the same time under a general anesthetic? and also is it possible to fix my two front teeth during that or would I have to have a brace? (I am very reluctant to have one as I am in my mid-20’s and would be very self-concious of a brace). Thanks.

A. General anaesthesis is not available for dentistry unless it is something surgical such as the removal of wisdom teeth in hospital. However you could try sedation, this is a very safe procedure where the patient is conscious but feels very relaxed about the treatment

i have a fear of numness could i be put to sleep and could the treatment be done in one sitting

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Q. hi dr.moore could you help me i have a real fear of numness in my mouth therefore i would absolutely insist on my mouth not being numbed, but i do want a smile that lights up the room and my face!…basically some kind of cosmetic dentistry,so i guess what i would like to know is could i be put to sleep and could it be done in one sitting.thankyou

A. Unfortunatley a general anaesthetic is not safe enough to be available in the dental surgery. It is possible to use sedation but you will still feel the pain of the teeth being treated. Another option is inhalation sedation using nitrous oxide similar to the gas used by a mother during the birth of a child. Look for a sedation practice in your area they may be able to help

I have to have root canal treatment and the dentist has agreed to avoid adrenaline in my anesthetic but are there any side effects of the injection without adrenaline and will it be ok for this proceedure?

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Q. Hi, On 2 occasions in the recent past I have suffered a panic attack after infiltration of the local anaesthetic whilst having fillings, I know this is due to the adtenaline in the injection ( and my fear) I now have to have root canal treatment and the dentist has agreed to avoid adrenaline but are there any side effects of the injection without adrenaline and will it be ok for this proceedure? Is there any chance the medication can affect other parts of thee body. Many Thanks

A. hi
there is no real difference you might need more of it. if you had panic attacks after injections in the lower jaw this may be because a blood vessel also had some anaesthetic injected around it which is hard to avoid.#
if it was after injections in the upper arch this is psychological and you will need a different type of doctor

I am petrified of dentists and I need fillings. Will they put me to sleep when the work is being done?

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Q. I am petrified of dentists to the point of not going, i now have loose teeth and need a lot of fillings the thought fills me with fear, is it possible to be put to sleep and have all the work carried out in one go?

A. Hi

I would recommend you visit a dentist who deals with nervous patients. After examination of your mouth it would be possible to say if all the treatment could be done under  iv sedation.

I am very nervous, what are my options to close the gap in my teeth

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Q. Hello, I have the first two molars, on lower jaw, taken out by dentist when I was 13yrs of age,(no room for teeth he said) This was very bad experience and ended in hospital. Now unfortunatly I have just found out I have to have 3rd molar taken out, bottom right. I trust my dentist. She has given me choice of ,living with large gap, a denture or inplant. I dont realy want huge gap as allready a bit consoius of exsisting one. But I am very nervous of the surgery required for inplant as well as high cost. Does it hurt as the drilling into jaw sounds quiet bad. I dont want to be given another bad experience. I am 42 and dont want an awful looking mouth

A. The surgery should not be painful, Intravenous sedation is a nice add on as you are awake & stress free during the surgery but have real trouble remembering  anything the next day.
Implant surgery in the molar region does need care to avoid the lower dental nerve, a CT scan or £D jaw scan is worth paying the extra for.
Orthodontic space closure is an alternative but expect treatment times 1-2years. Clear aligners possible such as Clearstep or invisalign
