Are My Fillings Causing the Metallic Taste in My Mouth?

Wednesday, April 8th, 2015
Q.

I have had many amalgam fillings fitted over many years and some are above twenty years old. Over the last year I have developed a constant metallic taste in my mouth and both my teeth and tongue feel on edge, sometimes even giving a ‘buzz’ like I’ve been chewing aluminium foil. Is this because my fillings need replacing? If so, am I able to instruct my NHS dentist to do this or do I have to rely on his judgement before I can get this work done? Also, am I allowed any say in what they actually use as filling material because after 44 years of swallowing mercury amalgam I fear I am at risk of mercury poisoning. Do I have a choice of any alternative filling material offered on the NHS or am I forced to go private? If the metallic taste is not because of the fillings do you have any idea what could be causing it?

Can I Replace my First Molars With New Wisdom Teeth?

Thursday, February 12th, 2015
Q.

Hi, can I replace my 1st molar (which is full of amalgam) with new wisdom teeth? I am 18 years old and my second molar is fine. Does such treatment exist? If so could you tell me of a possible price range and whether I need to go to a specialist (or can my normal dentist do the job)? I have a filling on all 4 first molars, will I be able to replace them all with wisdom teeth? Thanks in advance.

I Replaced My Amalgam Filling With A White Filling As It Had Decay. My Molar Tooth Is Now Throbbing. Should I Go Back To My Dentist?

Thursday, October 23rd, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. Today I got an amalgam filling replaced with a white filling. The tooth was not sore in any way but the dentist advised that there was decay and that I would need the filling removed. The molar tooth is now throbbing. Is this normal? Also when I eat, the food seems to be lodging between the filled tooth and the other molar, this did not happen before the procedure. Should I go back to the the dentist? I wish I hadn’t got the amalgam filling removed as it did not cause me any pain. Now I feel like I’ll probably need a root canal. Thank you.

How Much Should a CEREC Cad/Cam Inlay Cost?

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014
Q.

Dear Dr Hughes, I have just had an estimate for £899.00 to have the old filling removed from a molar and a CEREC CAD/CAM inlay / overlay procedure carried out to the same molar. Does this sound to you to be a fair estimate for this treatment? I have not decided yet whether to go ahead with this procedure. I would very much like to have the procedure done, but it seems quite expensive to me. The filling that is in place, but loose at the moment, is the older mercury amalgam type. Does this make any difference to the cost of this procedure? Many thanks, I hope you can help me come to a decision.

I Am Worried About The Effects Of Amalgam Fillings. Please Guide Me On Whether I Should Go For Amalgam Fillings Or Cerec?

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr. Mark,
I have 6 cavities and I am getting them filled soon. My dentist is suggesting Amalgam fillings. I have done so much research on effect of Amalgam on health and teeth. Even composite fillings are not durable. I have come across Cerec cad cam fillings, but not sure of its durability and effects on health.
I am looking for long durable, natural looking fillings.
Please guide me on whether I should go for Amalgam fillings or Cerec? Or any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Good day!

My Tooth Aches After I Had A Root Canal. I’m Supposed To See My Dentist Again Soon. What Treatment Should I Ask For?

Monday, July 21st, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Gambroudes. I had root canal treatment on my tooth one year ago and my dentist placed a ceramic cap on my tooth. But shortly afterwards it automatically came out of mouth while I was eating food. After this incident I visited another dentist, and I found that the previous dentist filled my tooth with cement instead of any permanent material or metal. This second dentist filled it with silver in my tooth after doing some proper cleaning but the next day my tooth started aching. I’m supposed to meet my dentist again soon. Please tell me what treatment I should take from the dentist. Thank you for listening.

My Amalgam Filling Is Fragmenting And Needs To Be Removed. How Would This Be Done And What Are The Costs?

Monday, June 9th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I have a question I hope you can help me with. What material is used to fill the area that is extracted in an apicoectomy? This is after I’ve had two operations to remove cysts and I also have an amalgam packing from 1977 and 1985 in the same area. This amalgam is now fragmenting and needs to be removed. What is involved in doing this and how successful will the operation be? What is the cost of this and can it be done at a dentist surgery or hospital? I need help understand the procedure. Thank you for your time.

I Have A Chipped Tooth And My Amalgam Filling Shows Through. Can I Have The Filling Replaced?

Monday, March 24th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore, I would like your help. My main concerns are with two teeth. May I have your view to what is the best solution as:
My bottom tooth is chipped inwards showing the whole amalgam filling? I would like to replace the amalgam filling with a white filling and I would like the chipped tooth mended without the crown in place. How is this possible and how is it mended? Also I would like to ask you what’s the best and strongest filling to mend the top tooth (near the gum). Thank you for your help and advice in advance.

What Would Be The Cheapest Way Of Improving My Molars? I’m Not Sure Crowns Are The Answer.

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014
Q.

Hi Marcus. I have two missing incisors and when I was young an orthodontist attempted to correct this by closing the gaps with braces. About 10 years ago my NHS dentist at the time evened off the canines with white fillings to look more like incisors. I have quite a bad under-bite and feel that as I get older I don’t have enough teeth to fill out my face. My dentist here had suggested I could improve the look of my teeth by putting crowns on the premolars which have amalgam fillings and which are slightly visible when I smile. This seems an expensive way of not making a lot of difference. Because I’ve never been able to afford cosmetic dentistry I’ve never pursued any further advice but I’d like to know if there is anything I could do and what it might cost.

Is There Any Chance My Dentist Could Of Left Behind Some Silver Filling In My Tooth?

Thursday, January 2nd, 2014
Q.

Hi, I had a silver amalgam filling removed today as it made my tooth look totally grey and had it replaced with a white filling. However, there is a silver band around the top quarter of the tooth (although the rest of the tooth looks okay). Does this mean that the dentist may have left some if the old silver filling in and this is now showing through? The old filling was pretty deep so maybe the white filling isn’t deep enough? How can this be rectified? The dentist said it’s just my tooth but it looks like some silver has been left in. Any advice please?
