Could I get Inman Aligners after having veneer treatment.Plz suggest

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q. Dear Dr Glaister, My top row of teeth are neat but the two front teeth stick out and they are longer than I would like. I was wondering: – is it possible to get teeth trimmed and to what extent (e.g. is it only the enamel part that can be trimmed?). Would it be necessary to have veneers fitted on the trimmed teeth – Could I get Inman Aligners even after having veneer treatment already? Many thanks and best regards

A. Teeth can be recontoured, but only slighly. If you are considering the Inman Aligner, you would have to have this done before having veneers.

Kind regards

Can the two uneven front teeth be made straight?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009
Q. My 2 front teeth on top are slightly uneven. One of them is straight on the bottom, and the other is slightly curved and hangs just a little bit lower. Can the one that is curved be filed down to match the one next to it so that they are both straight?

A. You can trim teeth but only by a small amount otherwise they become weak and sensitive

How can i get treatment for my twisted tooth without using braces?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Q. Hello, On the left side of my two front teeth i ahve a twisted tooth. I don’t want to have braces and turned the oppurtunity down because i didn’t want the pain and hassle for one tooth. I’m asking is there any way to have this cosmetically done, i.e. veneers, crowns, false teeth, etc. Please let me know; i haven’t had a cosmetics professionals opinion. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Many Thanks.

A. Crooked teeth can be treated using orthodontics to move the teeth into the correct position, veneers/ crowns to disguise their actual position or a combination of ortho and veneers/crowns.  If teeth are in a poor position some tooth will need to be trimmed away for the veneers/crowns to have the correct aesthetic result.  Ortho will minimise this amount of tooth reduction necessary.  Hope this helps.

I had braces years back and now crooked should i get braces fixed again?

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009
Q. Hi Dr Andrew Moore My teeth started to move only a few months after i had finished six months of wearing a removable brace and before this a fixed brace and night brace during a year and a half. This was when i was about ten , i am 38 now,my front teeth are quite big compared to what my baby teeth were like and so i have always had a problem with over crowding. As my teeth are quite crooked at the front, they over lap, do you think i would benifit from having a removable or fixed brace again could it help to straighten my front teeth or would my teeth end up crooked again. My bottom teeth are also crooked but i did not have a brace as i was told at the time that my teeth would eventualy straighten out but this did not happen. Thank you for your time and help

A. Hi Yes a new brace, probably fixed, would help but it would be essential for long-term, possibly permanent, retention afte the treatment has been completed. We often use a bonded retainer at my clinic to hold teeth permanently after the orthodontics has been completed.

After an operation gaps have developed btw teeth plz advice?

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009
Q. Hiya, i had an operation on my gum a few years back which left me with a gap at the front of my mouth, this happened due to a mistake made during the operation? since this happened i have been very subconscious about my teeth as they are in quite a bad state. Who should i contact about this? im looking for a solution, possibly veneers. Thanks. Hope to hear from you soon.

A. Gaps around the gum level can be disguised using crowns or veneers.  Obviously the underlying health of your gums is important to be correct prior to providing these types of restorations.  At Aviva Cosmetic Dentistry we have a wealth of experience in dealing with smile porblems such as these.  Please contact my practice for a free cosmetic consultation.

Can i wear my retainers only at nights?

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009
Q. I just got my retainers and its really geting hard to ge used to especially with my tongue being placed between the retainers and was wondering if it could be possible just to wear the retainers at night instead of day and night, My othrodontist told me to wear it for 6 months, i actually went by 1 month without wearing the retainers due to the delay of my appointment and my teeth haven’t moved at all? is it possible to wear it just for nights?

A. It may be possible but pleae discuss this with your orthodontist as a relapse at this stage would be a dreadful pity

What kind of treatments are available for teeth correction or alignment?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Q. Dr Caplan, i am looking for some advice on my teeth which i am very unhappy with, my front two teeth seem to sit further back than the rest, which gives the effect the teeth on either side of them look like fangs, this prob seems to have got worse im quite sure my teeth are moving! what type of treatment would i need to correct this problem?

A. There are 3 treatments available to you – orthodontics to move the teeth into the correct position; veneers to disguise the position of your teeth; a combination of orthodontics and veneers.  With teeth in a poor position I would always recommend moving the teeth first and then reassess the look.  If time is a big issue veneers can be placed as in option 3 but your teeth may need nerve treatment if they are in a poor position

How much would it cost for tooth whitening and leveling?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Q. Hi, my teeth are pretty much straight but different lengths. I want to get them whitened but also want them level (its like they need filing across), is this an easy procedure and roughly how much would a dentist charge. Thanks

A. You can only file a certain amount off the teeth without them needing a veneer being made to reshape them properly. It is possible to make minor adjustments though and with tooth whitening the final result can be very good. You should budget around £500 for tooth whitening and minor recontouring and from £500 per veneer if required.

Q. Hi there , im wondering if you could tell me ways to fix my front two teeth . i dont mind about the others , my front two just cave in and form a triangle . i can send you a picture ? i dont have alot of money to spare . thanks

A. Invisalign or Inman removable aligners are quite affordable. Speak to your dentist if he can make a removable appliance to straighten those teeth for you, there are a lot of options for you.

Please advice me on lowering the floor of the mouth and building up mandibular band

Monday, August 24th, 2009
Q. Dear Sir, I’ve been “selected” for a procedure that I am not familiar with and want to find out more information…I have been waiting for approval though a county dental facility to have the rods or implants for witch the denture can be attached to…My oral surgeon called and said that while I wait for the OK for those rods/ implants..He would like to perform something..I am not sure of the exact label for the surgery..it involves Lowering the floor of my mouth..? and building up mandibular area..they want to take a skin graft from my buttocks and use it as a graft for my mouth..They want to do this because my lower jaw was without a denture for 8 years..not that I didn’t have one but got poor dentistry at the time and it did not fit and cut me badly..result..stopped using lower denture to my detriment. Does any of this sound familiar to you..I am 56 years old and in fairly good health in spite of wheel chair status…part of the reason I am in a wheel chair and lost my teeth was because eight years ago I was misdiagnosed as having end stage breast cancer to the bone…I didn’t though but was placed in a Morphine induced comatose state for a year..till they figured out their mistake and withdrew the medications…however I lost most of my teeth..then when I woke up I had to have the rest of them removed…I need some direction here..I am scared to go under anesthesia for 2 hours! In addition I need to know the possible side effects for such a procedure. He said it would be that long…scares me when you consider all of the medical mistakes I have endured in one life time…maybe I am over thinking this..but I need to do research..But don’t no where to turn..he did say this procedure was a common one before implants…what is he talking about..I will have further instruction next week when I go in but want to be educated enough when I go to ask the right questions..Can you please direct me to some educational material..I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

A. Hello

This procedure effectively increases the height of the mandible by lowering the level of the tissues around it making the denture more stable and les likely to rub on the floor of the mouth, something that can still happen even if implants are used to anchor the denture. Its quite a complex procedure and not commonly used in dentistry these days. Talk things through with your oral surgeon agian the next time you see him i’m sure he will be able to give you a bit more information especially if he uses the technique a lot.

A. If you go to pubmed on the internet this will give you access to research papers.  I think the oral surgeon is taking bone from your iliac crest which is in your buttock region rather than skin.  Implants need bone to be placed into and grafting is a common procedure to increase the amount of bone available.  BUT please discuss this metter with your oral surgeon until you are clear of exactly what he intends to do.

I had braces a number of years ago but now my tooth has moved back what can be done now

Thursday, July 16th, 2009
Q. Hi. i am now 18 and have had a brace a number of years ago but now i have one tooth which has moved back into its original place. what procedures can i have done to get this corrected and can it be done by the nhs or will it have to be done by my dentist and if so what costs wouold i be looking at.

A. It is unlikely you will get this treatment on the NHS. You could ask your dentist for a quick aligner treatment such as the inman aligner. This works well for mild crowding.

Suggest a way to fill gap between my front tooth without braces and its cost

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009
Q. Dear dr i am 28yrs old i have a half a centimeter gap between my front teeth and from ten years of sucking my thumb as a child they also stick out and they desperately need fixing. during my child hood i was teased even as an adult i getteased also. recently i started lookin at solutions in fixing it ive started savingfor reshaping and veneers.please could you tell me the best way to go about fixin my problem withoout braces and how much it would cost? i also have one teeth missing one the left side and two missing one the right which my dentist given me dentures which im desparte to get rid of

A. Hi many thanks for your email, there are many treatments available to help your front teeth, there is a quick brace option called in the inman aligner which can help improve the position of the front four teeth within a four month period, alternatively there is veneers to reposition the teeth but the disadvantage of this treatment would be the tooth preparation required is sometimes aggressive.

the other options to help close the gaps are dental implants or bridgework.

the best option would be to have a consultation to discuss all these options with a cosmetic dentist in your area.

My 2 front teeths forward which is hereditary how long does invisalign take to push it back

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009
Q. Hi, i have my 2 front teeth which are a bit forward than normal. i wan thinking to get invisalign soon, but i think its kinda hereditary my nan n den mum all had same teeth.. is it that the teeth are foorward or the jaw is like tht.. i really feel low sometimes i want them to be straight n how long does it take to push teeth back in lol.. i will wait for your reply many thanks

A. Invisalign would be a good option for you. It is discreet and can move things relatively quiclky. If your family members have the same tooth position, then I need to stress the importance of wearing a retainer after the treatment is complete. This will prevent the teeth from moving into that position again. I recommend a consultation with your dentist or an orthodontist who can tell you more. good luck

I have croocked teeth, one of my front teeth overlaps

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Q. I have croocked teeth, one of my front teeth overlaps on the other and it is very noticable. My overlapping teeth makes me self confident and at my age, im 15 by the way, i feel that its too late for me to be wearing braces, i dont want to walk around with metal all over my mooth. Is there another option for me to straighten my teeth without having to wear braces?

A. Hi many thanks for your enquiry, there are two treatments i would recommend, one is an inman aligner, this is a clear brace which is removable, you can see that you are wearing something but is more descreet than the metal brackets. the advantage of this system is that the treatment time is short and can correct the crossing over within 4 months.

the second option is a clear brace system called invisalign which is very descreet, the treatment time can be longer than the inman aligner but the product can more more teeth so if your not suitable for the inman you might be suitable for the inviasalign.

i would not recommend you have your teeth prepared for veneers or such treatments as i feel with the clear brace options there is no need for this. the inman aligner costs start at £1400, and the invisalign starts at £3000. hope this is helpful.

Do I need to get a root canal done on a teeth that should be crowned

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q. Hi, I have two root canals on my front teeth which have of course become discoloured I am going to have them crowned. Now my question is my other front tooth, it is healthy but as I call it “bucked” all my teeth are straight other then this one. I was thinking about crowning it but my dentist told me it must be root canaled first, I hate the idea of killing off a perfectly good tooth for cosmetic reasons really. I’m worried that later on I will be regretting this. My other two teeth had to be root canaled due to poor dentistry, I’m alittle worried I really want to keep my teeth : ). Any info greatly appreciated thank you for your time.

A. Hi, you are a wise person. All treatment carries a risk and you should only undertake optional treatments if you are happy with the level of risk / comprimse involved.IN some cases moving the tooth using clear braces might be a solution but cost, time to treat and the need to stabilise the position for very prolonged times might be unappealing.
I would be happy to give a free 15 minute consultation at the StJohns Dental Practice in Birmingham, we are 1 minute walk from New Street train Station. Call amy 0121 643 0610.

How long does it take for invisalign to respond to a query and what is the data (photos and moulds) that is need to be provided to them?

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q. I am using invisalign, I had 7 upper trays and 13 lower trays. I started the course back in June 2008, and finished my uppers in Sepetember. I finished my lowers last month, December. Before starting the whole invisalign procedure, my upper teeth were quite straight anyway, apart from my front right tooth was a bit further back than the rest. Getting this level with the rest of my upper teeth was my main reason for choosing invisalign, as these teeth are seen more than the rest. My bottom teeth are less visible when I talk naturally, or smile, but I thought I may as well get these straightened too, as they were pretty crooked. Ever since tray 5 of my uppers I sensed that the tooth I wanted aligned was not going to make it. I spoke to my orthodontist who told me to wait til I had finished all the trays before I get too concerned. Then after tray 7 (the last upper tray), I saw him again, and told him what I had suspected – my top teeth were not aligned. He told me to wait until I have finished my lower trays, and to keep wearing my upper tray as much as possible. Well I did this, and I went to see him last week as I have finished all trays now. My bottom teeth are 80% there, but not how I anticipated them to turn out. It is mainly my front lower tooth being more prominent than the rest. I am worried my ortho does not know what to do next – he keeps fobbing me off and brushing my concerns under the carpet, and claims my teeth are fine to him. He admits my top tooth is slightly further back than the rest, and claims this is because it is less “bulbous” than the rest of my teeth. He says he plans to contact the invisalign company to ask them if more trays are possible for me. He took no photos of my teeth to show them my latest results, and says he should have an answer for me in the next 2 -4 weeks!!! How does it take so long??? So in the meantime I have to keep wearing the trays. Has anyone had similar issues? What should the next step be? I suspect my botton prominent tooth needs shaving a bit to allow the rest of my teeth to come in line, and want my top tooth to be aligned with the rest. Thanks

A. You need to ask your orthodontist to take new moulds and photos and send them to invisalign.  You need more aligners to finish your teeth.
