Q. Hi I have had a crown in place for 15 years+. Think it must have metal in it as I now have a dark tone to the gum above the tooth. Can this be rsolved or is it a case of replacing the crown with another material? Thanks.
A. Unfortunatley you would normally need to replce the crown and bury the edge of the crown below the gum. You could also use an all ceramic crown to avoid this in the future.

Q. I have an overbite and i’m losing my 4 front teeth.I’m thinking of removing the teeth and getting partial acrylic dentures and wearing them for a year and then switching to the flexi partial or dental implants whichever will be easeier on my wallet. My question is should i get braces first and then worry about my teeth falling out later? The reason i ask is because another dentist recommended just that and thought it was odd but then again i’m not a dentist.I will appreciate your response in this matter cause i’m so confused and i need to decide which will be the most effective dental plan for me.Thank you so much.
A. If your remaining teeth would benefit form a better position and if your gum line will be improved for future implants for your 4 front teeth I would also recommend a brace. Hope that helps

Q. At the moment I have a 4 tooth bridge which is at the front on my upper teeth. It is a hinge which I have been told is broken so at the moment this is only supported on the one side which is on a post. I have been told by 2 dentists that as this is a large bridge I will now have to have a denture which although not happy have accepted this is the only solution. My problem that before I had my bridge had a plate and as have a strong gag reflex didn’t not get on with this at all also when I was eating it shifted as was most uncomfortable. I have been shown a denture that is metal and doesn’t seem to cover the roof of my mouth would this be a better option than the normal partial acrylic denture for me? I have been told that this is not available on the NHS? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
A. hi many thanks for your email, my advice is to think about dental implants which are fixed and do not require a plate. the cost of a four unit bridge on two implants are approx £5000. msny practices do offer interest free credit to help finance the treatment.

Q. can i travel-fly if i have a abscess in my mouth
A. Hi many thanks for your email, it is unwise to fly if you have a dental abcess, i would try to get this treated before you fly the pain is said to be severe if you fly with an infected tooth.

Q. I have never had good teeth and now have no top teeth left.I’am 35 now but have always had a fear of the dentist. I hate having dentures as they have taken away any confidence i used to have.Every time i go to the dentist i always seem to come away with dentures that have teeth that are bigger than which was on my old plate. I have been wearing the same plate for years which has no gum above the teeth and find that i cannot wear the full set of dentures they try to give me as they feel awkward and make me gag. Can you advise me if i have any other available options rather than dentures. i would love to have the roof of my mouth back again rather than a plastic one but understand this may not be optimistic. with thanks.
A. Thanks for your e-mail, please do not give up hope, there is an alternative to your dentures. Many dental practices, including my own, are now able to offer dental implants with high success rates. These dental implants can be used to secure a denture in place, to eliminate the fear of the plate slipping out, or they can be used to secure bridgework. This latter option would enable you to have fixed teeth without the need for any acrylic covering your palate. I suggest that you attend a dental implant clinic for a consultation, to assess whether this is something that would appeal to you. Some of these clinics will be able to offer you a free inital consultation, so that you can make an informed choice without any financial loss. Kindest Regards. Dr Kailesh Solanki

Q. I have been given a kit called ‘day white excel 3’ from my dentist in Australia. I used the kit last week for 9 days straight and was meant to leave it on for half an hour, but sometimes left it for over an hour. I had very sensitive teeth afterwards and felt that diet coke or anything acidic afterwards was attacking my teeth. It looks like some enamel may have been eroded the root s of some of my teeth, is this possible or could the whitening highlight a problem that may already be there? In addition do fizzy drinks and sparkling water erode the enamel on teeth over time? Thanks in advance.
A. During bleaching and for 2 weeks afterwards you should stay away from fizzy drinks and staining foods/drinks. Home bleaching kits will not cause erosion of your teeth provided they are prescribed by a dentist and are carbamide peroxide based.

Q. I’m about to go to see a dentist today for the first time in many years. My teeth (or whats left of them) will probably have to come out, but whats the best kind of dentures to get after. How much do the different types cost. Any info would be great
A. The best thing initially is an acrylic denture fitted while the gums heal. You could then consider a chrome denture or an implant-supported denture once the tissues have fully healed

Q. I had a white filling in a molar tooth I think it was an acrylic one, it was cured by a UV light and matched the natural colour of my tooth, since it was done about four months ago it has been sensitive to hot & cold, I’ve been back to the dentist, he explained that because the cavity was deep it could have been that the acrylic filling was conducting the heat/cold to the root causing some discomfort he has now replaced it with another type of white filling that did Not need a UV light to cure it, its pure white and he said it would be prone to staining, it left a nasty taste in my mouth he also told me not to eat on the repaired side for about an hour, My question is, what material is it likely to be and is this a better material than the acrylic one? Will it last for as long as an acrylic one, Thanks for your time,
A. i think what you are referring to is a composite filling which is a resin based material, not acrylic. i am unsure what the other material you are describing is, but you could find out from your dentist if this was helpful.

Q. Hi Rob, I have been lookin into getting a set of permenant vampire teeth joined on to my k9 teeth. Do you know if any dentist will attempt this and if so how much would I be looking at spending? Many thanks.
A. You can get veneers done. The limiting factor is accomodating the increased size in the existing arrangement with the opposing teeth. Your jaw alignment would ned to be checked. Human jaw muscles need more freedom than a traditional fang arrangement provides and probably it is not a long term restoration , veneer fracture & debonding would be ongoing. However for an appearance that lasts a couple of years that could be replaced with conventional veneers, it is possible.
£100 assesment, photos, study casts trial wax up.
£420 per veneer.

Q. Over the last 12 months, I have lost all but 3 of my bottom teeth. I have dentures which are awful looking and ill fitting. I asked my dentist about cosmetic dentures, but am not sure he understood exactly the type I want, as he told me they would cost between £300 – £500, yet looking at internet sites they seem a lot more expensive. The type I am thinking of are the sort seen on tv shows such as 10 yrs younger. What sort of cost would I be looking at please.
A. There are two types of cosmetic denture. One with porcelain teeth and one with acrylic teeth. The dentures with acrylic teeth cost between £1200 to £1500 each. This means that for an upper and lower set of teeth would be up tp £3000. The dentures with porcelain teeth cost between £6000 to £10000 for upper and lower dentures. Porcelain teeth are harder wearing and can look more realistic but are heavier and can feel slightly heavier than acrylic teeth. If you are going to have these types of dentures made it is best to find a cosmetic dentist that does dentures regularly for patients.
The other option to dentures is implants and these can retain a full arch bridge which is fixed so you won’t need to remove it at night.
The cost of the treatment would vary depending on how many implants are needed. If you want to investigate this option further the best thing to do is have a consultation with an implant dentist so that you have all the options
I hope this helps
Kind Regards
